Virgin have just mailed to say that there is no booze on the train home from on Sat night as it's gonna be carrying football fans. I'm travelling with a 4 y.o., is it gonna be OK or horrendous? We are booked in first class, but I read somewhere they declassify the coaches sometimes.

Fortunately it's not the 1970s and the modern day football hooligan is unlikely to enter first class in order to wreak their special form of havoc.

Not really, as our youngest is 4 he travels free, so it's cheaper to go first class and hope he can get a seat than book a seat second class seat.

If it's the train to Newcastle, then don't worry, they'll have been spanked off Palace and not be in the party mood.

surely the whole point of First class is to keep the riff raff away

Same applies, however, there will only be about 14 of them going, so you'll be reet 😀

You've got to be a millionaire to afford a season ticket and cross-country train tickets, so I'd imagine first class will be rammed.

Sadly not at the weekends. With all the offers the companies put on (and to be honest, not actually offering a 'first class' service') you're as likely to encounter all manner of underclass pretending they are Lord of the manor.

Makes me sick.

Leeds actually sell out every away allocation they get. You'll be fine in first class.

I was going to say you'd be fine, but then I saw it was Leeds.

You'll almost certainly die.

Seriously: what are you expecting? It's not 1970. You might need to worry if their manager is in first class with you. He's an.... ahem.... 'Interesting character'

I wouldn't worry - Leeds will have a new manager by Saturday

How are you going to sneak alcohol onto the train though ? , surely that's the main problem 😛

I've got to drive back from the station...so I won't be drinking whatever happens:-( I don't mind a bit of banter, but I really don't fancy having my 4 year old into the middle of drunken football madness. I honestly have no idea what to expect. I had a pretty bad experience a few years ago when some people I was travelling with were threatened by some people who wouldn't let them sit in their reserved seats. It was pretty ugly and spoiled the day.

Nothing against Leeds...just a quick google search threw up some stats about them being the worst behaved fans on public transport. I don't like football, so I have no axe to grind with any team.

I was really just after a heads up, as I suppose I'm slightly worried about my young 'uns as they are of a pretty gently persuasion.

I work in Leeds and frequently visit Huddersfield.. You know when Leeds are playing Huddersfield at Huddersfield.. The station and town centre is more police than people!

It will not be pleasant . Leeds fans , particularly those who go to away games , are ....

Could be worse you could be stuck on there with CYCLISTS, I've done some research and they are the worst, one even said he's throw a pregnant lady off the train if she loitered in his bike parking space.

Mikewsmith has a point. It's not the football fans that are the issue, it's the planks/cyclists that deliberately wind them up...

(Point of order re 'reserved' seating, you are allocated a seat, but that doesn't mean you have booked it (like on a plane) if someone is sat in it, other than ask them to move, there's bugger all you can do about it.)

I think you'll be fine. No one's going to start on a man with his 4 year old son. Might be noisy but your lad might like the excitement.

Sure you'll be fine. Leeds fans are no worse than your average and they'll be happy after a win.
Ps Cellino's the owner.

In my experience those journeys are funny. My mum and I came back with a load of Sunderland fans in standard class. They just sung a lot (despite having lost!). There are always British transport police on those trains, so nothing kicks off, or if it does they sort it out. I'd DEFINITELY go to the toilet at the station before you leave and don't fill your child with drink on the train...the toilets were minging!
