Taking advantage of the great support of STW...

Mrs B is looking to get a live feed camera for the inside of a horse trailer - to ensure said horse is happy and safe during any journeys (sure we could make a pun there....).

Options are likely hard-wired or more cost effective option likely to be Bluetooth enabled I suspect.

There appear to be plenty relatively cheap cameras on Am*zon, etc, but interested in real-world usage feedback please.

Thanks in advance.

My wife had a Trailervision Bluetooth camera. Came with a little screen you put on the dash. Camera had a magnetic base, so was easy to situate.
The couple of times I saw it in use, I thought the picture quality was surprisingly good for something that appeared cheap and cheerful.

I've done this. I used a wireless kit that connects any camera to any display, but I tow with a 6m van so I used a wired extension to place the receiver at the back of the van in the high level rear brake light housing. And then I put the transmitter inside the trailer at the front.

I works great, only once have I momentarily got a rear view image of myself from a removal van driving in front 🙂

Also I used a camera with IR LEDs so that you can see the horses annoying each other at night.

Finally, I worked out you can use any old switch before your display to switch between two cameras. You connect the shielding of each camera feed together, and solder the core to each switch input. So you can use the rear view to hitch up, then hit the button and then you've got horse cam.

PS Upgrade to a twin towing socket or 13 pin and connect the camera (and internal lights) to the ignition switched live. This way you don't need to drive with the sidelights on to enable the camera.

Baby monitors?
You could even talk to the horse while watching it

I had a cheap and cheerful wired reversing camera kit from Amazon. The kit consisted of small camera the size of a match box, a small screen the size of a smart phone and plenty of wiring even for a van for power and sending signal to the screen.

The camera had Infra Red LEDS built in so you can see a B&W image in the dark and in day light you got a reasonably sharp and crisp colour image. I think is 480p resolution so not HD but more than clear enough to help me reverse the van.

This was many years go and don't have a link but it was one of the cheapest priced kits at the time. So I recon you would be fine just picking a kit from eBay / Amazon. I suspect they have very similar internals.

Wife had a horse box specific thing. It was crap. Looked like the cheapest nastiest thing off Amazon, but put in a box with photos of horses and a huge price ticket.

Now for occasional use, we use our baby monitor (eufy/Anker) and have the camera unit plugged in to a USB power bank. Range and battery life are more than adequate.
