I do mostly road runs but live in an area where the trails are far more fun but muddy! Down by the river in the Rivelin Valley in Sheffield as an example.
I would like to get a pair of trail based shoes as opposed to my Saucony road shoes.
looking in decathlon yesterday they had tehse at £45:

and seen these in sports direct at £42:

need a size 10 - any reason to look beyond the decathlon ones?
Look fine to me.
got some kanadia 7's. been impressed so far and seem to suit my feet
SportPursuit have some Salomon & 5-10s
The 5-10s look good at £42 (+pnp). Quick del on them too.
tell a lie, kanadia TR8's from amazon. paid about £30.
Get some inov8's in a sale (Bland's as above or inov8 themselves) but I'd recommend buying shoes that you have actually tried on. If they don't fit then you won't wear 'em.
My Adidas terrex shoes are some of the grippiest I have ever used - but also fastest wearing sole rate of any shoe I know...
Salomon also wear quickly, but the uppers IME. I was happy when they were £15 ex-display/demo, but at full price, no way.
I now have a pair of Brooks Cascade - just as comfy, wider for my middle aged spreading toes, and so far waaaay more durable and long lasting than Adidas or Salomon. They were £50 in sale - and so far have already done more miles than the last two pairs of Adidas..
The latest generation of Decathlon trainers are all really good. My wife uses them without any complaints.
The best online place to get running shoes that I've found is: https://www.sportsshoes.com/
Inov-8s are always available at 50% off on that site.
Those Decathlon jobs are cracking for the money, nice and grippy and very comfortable.
I'm new to running off road but i picked up some Addidas Galaxy Trail Running shoes from that weasel that owns Newcastle Utd for about £25.
Prior to those I've generally run (in fits and starts) using heavily cushioned shoes designed for over-pronators. The Galaxy's by comparison as very light, have minimal padding and seems to have decent grip off road in the mud. I seem to be getting less injuries too which is good though maybe that is due to less road running. As a result I'm a (still slightly skeptical) believer in barefootish running and a strong supporter of not paying over the odds for marketing pumped into getting expensive running shoes that complement your running style.
sportsshoes.com generally get my money and are pretty cheap.
My last lot of shoes for trail were Innov8 mud claws, but those might be a touch minimal for your first pair.
Ive got the decathlon kiprun trail race 4s. Lowish drop minimal padding but grippy as owt. Been comfy up to 20k on the trails.
I got them as I already had a pair of their cheap road running shoes that fitted well with a nice wide toe box which is something I found inov8 lack.
But I did have to go up a euro size to a 45 I'm a 44 in most things. I found this out by trying them on in a shop.
I mail ordered the trail races and they fitted the exact same.
Inov8 X Talon 212s. Had 4 pairs, all been great and lasted around 500 - 600 miles each before they started to fall apart.
I ordered some Salomon speedcross from sportshoes.com t'other day for £60, so although a bit outside your budget, if the Decathlon ones don't fit, then you can give them a go whilst they are on offer.
My Adidas terrex shoes are some of the grippiest I have ever used – but also fastest wearing sole rate of any shoe I know…
I've got some of those, bought them in a closing down sale at a shop I used to use - most uncomfortable shoes I've ever made the mistake of buying. I suppose my feet aren't Adidas shape!
The point of this fascinating anecdote is to agree with what MrSparkle said - try them on properly before you buy. The Decathlon ones are fine, but if they're uncomfortable...
I like Asics Fuji Attack. Reasonable cushioning, grip is not bad for most stuff, comfy for long runs. Usually available for about £50 to £60.
Try Start Fitness as well, they are often good prices.
I tried a few cheap ones but in the end got saucony trail ones from sports shoes direct/last years for about 60. Cracking shoes
