Is this any good? They have an offer on at the moment where you get a free silva head torch with an annual subscription. The sub is £50 for 13 issues and the head torch alone is nearly £40 i think. Gotta be worth a punt??

I used to get it back in the day.

The problem is it gets very repetitive very quickly.

Yeah it was very useful 20-odd years ago as a newbie hillwalker, got some great route ideas from it.

After a while I had more ideas than I could use and it felt quite repetitive in terms of the content.

Similar to MTB mags.

Exactly what chakaping said ^. I'd been talking about it recently with someone and they likened it to MBR, make of that what you will. For me located in Scotland I've no desire or need for info on mid England walking.

Used to buy occasionally, now we get it as a freebie as a bank account perk. Probably worth it for a year, then just read the issue from 12 months ago each month forever more.

You can read it for free in the Libby app from your local library.

I used to buy it back in the day as it always had good routes/photos especially Scottish hills so many to choose from
The reviews were repetitive but I suppose boots, jackets, rucksack and a stove for boiling your water are all you need
It will also teach you how to read a map and use a compass handy skills to know

I have just bought the latest issue, its been a while, it hasn't changed much.

Its very repetitive, but then I had the subscription for nearly 3 years before cancelling. I guess you can only say so much about routes, kit etc

As above. I subscribed for a few years when it was first launched but the articles are repeated seasonally, the gear reviews are ok but repetitive, the routes were well written and photographed but, being spread around the UK, only a few were ever relevant. Might be the sort of thing you could read for a year.

TBH I'd say much the same as the STW magazine.

I was an avid reader until about 1998ish when they gave a glittering review to a pair of Karrimor boots made carbon kevlar weave. I bought a pair and they were indeed great for a couple of walks before they lost all support and I buggered my ankles in the Alps.

I emailed them with my experiences and the summary of our conversation was them saying they don't have time to test stuff other than a day out.

When I returned the boots to Cotswold they gave me a refund and the guy off the record admitted mine weren't the first to do this by any means.

Another reason to chuckle when people blame Mike Ashley for ruining Karrimor! 🤣

Boot reviews are some of the most pointless magazine articles.

The most important thing about a pair of boots is if they fit you or not.

They can be the lightest, hardest wearing, grippiest sole but if they don't fit properly they are useless.

They can be the lightest, hardest wearing...

...and their review process didn't even cover that!

I think you can get basic info about the level of grip and of flexibility - plus whether there are any obvious issues - with a boot review.

Yeah, you have to try them on. But as someone with "standard" shaped feet, most will fit me OK in the correct size. It's hardly like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Anyway, did you take the offer OP?

Yes i did in the end as i fancied a new head torch anyway. It might inspire a few different walks too so not a lot to lose. I just need to ensure i don't let the subscription auto renew after the first year.
