My parents have an old Kenwood hi-fi with tape deck, cd player etc. Its starting to break so they have asked me for some advice on a replacement unit.
They have phones and a tablet but I don't think they will get on with streaming Spotify or the like, so it will need a cd player at least.
Top of the wish list is to be able to play music in the lounge or dining room depending on where they are. Is it possible to have a hifi in the lounge with a pair of wireless speakers they can move or can you have multiple sets of speakers for each room?
I'm normally pretty good with tech stuff, but I'm not familiar with what's available with hifi systems.
Can anyone offer any advice or recommendations please?
Cheers!
Sonos is the answer!
I thought sonos was just a wireless speaker? What would they need if they wanted to play a cd or radio via a sonos setup?
The connect and connect amp have a line in for an aux like a CD player
I got a sonos connected to an Creek amp, speakers etc. optically via the dac in the cd player. Fairly dear solution if they don't have kit like that though.
Sonos has a 3.5mm jack that has some Harmon kardon soundsticks at the other end in the kitchen.
For other rooms, I just use a Bose bluetooth speaker thing. I also take the bose speaker thing away a lot too. Awesome thong really. Maybe it's all they need.
They can then have a wireless play1 play3 or play5 speaker anywhere in the house and they can select off an app or sonos remote onto whichever room/speaker they want.
Internet radio/dab etc is available on sonos
Only the play5 has a 3.5mm jack. The connect and connect amp have RCA inputs.
Any other options or is sonos the best solution? They have a 3 bed semi so don't need a massively powerful set up.

Where are they getting their music from?
I use TuneIn for radio and google music for my music.
Originally I had Bluetooth speaker which are great as you can move them around if they have a battery. Then I got a Sonos 3 play speaker which Cost £200. It sounds really good but is not portable. The app works really well with google music and TuneIn radio. Once you set something playing it is completely independent of your phone unlike Bluetooth where if you get a call that is sent to the speaker.
I recently got a chromecast audio device from google for about £35. This is exactly like sonos but works directly through the app you are using like google music, TuneIn or BBC iplayer or Spotify. It has no speaker just an audio out. This is great and works well. I bought an old amp and speakers and plugged chromecast into the back and now for £70 I get a system like sonos that sounds better.
Uploading all your music to google play music is free. One can choose to download music to your phone so you do not have to use the internet but then sonos or chromecast will not work but Bluetooth will
Sonos doesn't need to be a powerful setup, You can just get a connect then have a couple of play1 wireless speakers wherever they want.
