I stand next to it and take a pic. Why not? Round here you *have* to be into tractors, guns and trials motorbikes, in no particular order. We have ploughing matches here...!

I thought that one of 'the rules' was that your bike had to be in the picture. In which case, I give you a harlequin back hoe loader and my Anthem X3. [img] [/img]Some thread resurrection this one!

You can imagine my excitement last summer when the missus and I were out with the wee one in her bike trailer and we dropped in to see our pal and his new MF. He was far more interested in my Alpine 160, and insisted my daughter and I went for a spin while he farted about on the bike.

I asked him how fast to go when harrowing and he said "if your head hits the cab roof you're going too fast." Classic.

What a day!

Can I ask a question? I would love to take pics of tractors but am rather concerned that I could be mistaken for a stalker.

Are you all using powerful lenses or do you hide in a hedge or what do you do?

Thanks.

Don't be shy 🙂 Just get in there and take the pic 🙂

Was out with my daughter today and we saw a new, shiny Massey Ferguson which I was admiring surreptitiously so not to be outed as a geek.

Thought I had been caught out as my daughter cracks up laughing. Lucky escape for my (limited) street-cred though as it turns out her friend is called...

Maizey Ferguson!!

Guess her dad is a true tractor geek!

Spotted this group of tractors on the road out of Kamloops to Vernon and my first thought was tractor trumps 🙂
There were loads of them, some looked as if they're still in use and others just abandoned.
I have more photos which are on my Flickr page if you want to look?
Matt.

Chaps - guess what I saw today? A 2013 Tractors calendar - how cool is that? 8)

Now, not too far from me is a John Deere 'showroom'. Do you think it would be OK to rock up and ask to have a sit on these machines? They can only say 'no', can't they?

Apologies for not photographing any tractors, only have a basic camera so action shots are just not possible!

redthunder - eat your heart out!!!

A little C_G pootle turned into the amazing day. As soon as I saw this, my bike was thrown into the side of the trail and I charged into the field.

Wow, I found myself talking to the tractor owners, asking questions, did they mind me taking some photos. Apparently they were practising for a competition tomorrow and fellow tractorists from Dorset and Hampshire would be joining their fellow Wiltshire contenders.

Enjoy. 8)

CG just bloody go, my father in law collects old tractors and he would talk to a wall all day about them given the chance.
So the opportunity to talk to a real lady person who showed an interest & take pictures would make his year never mind day.

No I didn't go, had other stuff that needed attending to. But I will endeavour to find out where others are held so I can incorporate a bike ride.

Yes, it's definitely a blokey thing with male-bonding, get away from wifey etc. I really wanted to talk to the lady tractorist but, blimey, she sure was in the zone!

Most of the time yeah! There are incidents from time to time tho... When we are going full-tilt each plane can spray up to 6,000 acres in a day. Because a John Deere can't work at 110mph 😉

Not a tractor, but a plough, although not a regular plough that you would see attached to the back of a John Deere.

"home-made, propelled, log lifting and winching trailer?"
That explains the lack of guard ..
but as previously, that needs a guard on it

The two combines AND header on the low loader was abmitous

"Because a John Deere can't work at 110mph "
Guessing not the UK?
I always wonder how you can switch on/off in the right place and/or follow where you've been, ie so you're not overdosing? Its not like/I guess there are no tramlines for planes or GPS that can 'work' for sprayer-planes?
That and how does the 'draft'/wind effects of a plane effect the evenness of the spray?

"Whats with the relatively tiny hopper thing on the back ?"
For spreading slug pellets
Though normally it'd be used attached to something else doing another job like a sprayer or maybe a seed drill/piece of cultivation eqpt/rollers. Else if on its own, then maybe something with less compaction that a tractor, such as a quad-bike

Here are a few, Ill thin them down a bit by biasing the mishaps:
[img] [/img]
went soft quick

[img] [/img]
something flicked up

[img] [/img]
wet spot

[img] [/img]
another wet spot

just poor stacking

My 2 .5yr old son loves tractors. They have to be green or blue though.

We saw two combine harvesters on the road the other day. He flipping loved it!

Nope, I now live in the U.S. in Kansas. A LOT of open space... Pretty much everything out here is agriculture related. I love it! Must get a picture of some of the more conventional tractors to post...

Anyhoo, the spray planes do have GPS. There is a lightbar in front of the pilot that guides left and right to what has been sprayed already. It's a little like a Tron version of the guide lines on a back-up camera screen. There are automatic spray systems that open and close the booms when the plane is lined up, but they are not popular as spraying is so wind dependent that everything is a lot more tactical than that... A good pilot can be accurate within about 2 feet. My father-in-law's party trick is dropping water right up to a person/truck and stopping short right in front of them. It's crazy impressive!
Drift is a huge part of spraying, as it is used to direct spray away from roads, houses and sensitive crops. With the size of some of the fields here winds can be different directions from one end to the other, so it is very complex. Generally we only spray in winds below 12mph and in temperatures below 105ºF (the spray hangs in the air when the ground temp is too high). One of our competitors killed $300,000 of wheat a few years ago when he sprayed when it was too hot and the chemical drifted over half a mile. We have to be extremely careful! I know an awful lot of pilots from racers and stunt pilots to airline pilots and instructors, and they all have huge respect for good crop dusters...

Saw these nice red, shiny McCormicks at Slide Rock near Sedona Arizona & thought of you lot. Apparently they were used in the orchards there a few years ago.

I'm sure it fits in the rules somewhere.

I bring to the table a 1928 Ruston Hornsby AP engine, churning out a whole 6hp. le 6hp.

I never thought I'd see myself getting excited over tractors. 8)

Also found an old front loader cabless digger thing but the sun is behind it so will try and take a snap later.

P.S Sorry for the rubbish phone photos.

Only just discovered this; my contribution is after a ride around Grassmere in 2008; just snapped it 'cos it looked kind of cool.
