I'd like to trace my family tree but would rather not pay if I don't have to. Can you access the 1881 and 1891 census details for free? Is there anywhere else to look? I have a name (Joseph Charles), date of death (July 1887), age at death (68)and the fact that the memorial service was in Liverpool in 1887. What's the best I can do with this info?

The 1911 census is online. I've never really been into all that "my great great aunt was a maid" stuff, but I'm interested as far as those I remember. So I checked out my family on the 1911 census. If you get a hit you can pay a few quid for more details. BUT with a name like Joseph Charles you will be struggling. My great grandmother was called Alphonsine, which was much easier.

Ancestry allow a free trial usually. Try them and work quickly and you should be able to get back 4 generations or more quite quickly. The free trial will tend to allow UK searches only not international stuff.
