Following from my comments on the Dolgellau thread.
Whch towns do you know that are worth going to only for their bypasses?
I'll start the ball rolling with Dolgellau and Gloucester

Most North Welsh towns need a bypass!

Have you tried driving to North Wales lately?

We were heading for Anglesey and noted a distinct change in the quality of the roads almost as soon as we crossed the Welsh border.

We seemed to get stuck getting through numerous small towns along the route.

One such town held us up in a jam for 30 mins. The cause: Just a car parked outside a house blocking the flow of traffic in one direction. It must have been a 4 mile tailback. Daft!

Bypassing these towns isn't easy because of the lay of the land.

Well if the island of Madeira can get billions of Euros to built miles and miles of tunnels for a tiny minority of people, why can't Wales?

building more roads is never a solution.

depends how how much your life is blighted by hoards of traffic I suppose.

Take Silverstone and it's neighbour Syresham for example, the dualled A43 means that these wee villages effectively cut in two are whole again, and as it's been designed with the GP in mind, you can still mostly go about your life, even during the GP weekend. Quality of life massively improved...by building a new road...

Welsh roads should be given over to sheep.

Correcting the completely useless ones is!

I hardly drive anywhere these days, however it shocks me how tedious and slow travelling is when I do drive.

I blame stupid people who are unduly hesitant and slow when it's completely safe to travel just a little bit quicker (so as not to pxss everybody else off). Ban them all!! 😆

I tend to make my journeys very late at night when "numpty" is tucked up in bed. You then only have to watch out for deer and rabbits.

yeah, a very short sighted solution though. it would be better to encourage more people to travel to the gp by other means and will be pointless from next year if the gp is no longer held there!

correcting the completely stupid drivers does not mean building more roads though!

Can I nominate "Chichester" as being a town with a bypass that's next to useless?

Trying to get from the Goodwood end of this road to the M27 end at almost any time of the day is a nightmare.

Its actually quicker to drive through the town.

Arundel on the other hand has a wonderful bypass. You can see the Castle and the Cathedral from it, whilst still maintaining a forward motion 🙂

They've just opened the new bypass at Haydon Bridge on the A69

Before that you could sit in a pub & as the trucks went by your pint would vibrate across the table as the road was so close to the houses
It was total misery for the residents & at times was impossible to cross the high street with up to a 1000 vehicles/hr

pjt201, it's not just the GP that the A43 relieves old son, the road is the connection from the M40 to the M1, the amount of HGV traffic using the road was the reason for it being duelled, not just the annual GP, and don't worry though it's not the only event that Silverstone gets traffic mananged* for, there's 4-5 times a year that happens.

*And now it is managed, not the free for all it used to be. Most folk round here will tell you just how great that stretch of road is. Now, I understand your point, but it really has made a huge difference here

In the 80's had a mate who lived in Brecon so the opening of the Merthyr Tydfil by-pass was a god send, as the town came to standstill when the Hover washing machine factory had its shift change.

Newbury is alway worth a look the by-pass is a fine exapmle of dogma over common sense

Hover washing machine

They sound like a handy space-saving device - make them hover near the ceiling and cook underneath them? I wonder why they never made it to market? 😉
