I've been happily using a towbar bike rack for years, but have recently been thinking of getting one of the generic racks for luggage, does anyone here have any experience of using one on a mid-sized hatch (Mazda 3 sized)?
These are the sorts of things I'm thinking of using;

Most of the vids show them on larger vehicles, but I assume they should be fine on smaller cars too. I'm also a bit unsure about what to sit on them. I assume as long as they're appropriately secured, any bags/boxes should be OK at motorway speeds. Again, any experience out there?
I'm sure I've seen a thread on STW where someone who had a Thule 3 bike carrier, modded it to carry the luggage boxes and remvoed the need to buy a second rack, the search function is failing me to find this thread though!
When I've seen similar over here its been a bike rack, Thule etc, with sturdy alu boxes held on with ratchet straps. Thats been pretty much it tbh. No special rack, just a bike one.

Just bought the frame and used a large aluminium euro box I had. (Or a huge portage pack I have)
Use it on everything from Fabia to T6. Its fantastic for carrying firewood, dirty boots, wet stuff etc I don't want in the boot.
I've got something like this
and just strap it to the bars on my (altura, but I don't think that matters) towbar bike rack. works perfectly well, is very secure, I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work on any rack that carries bikes from below.
I've also strapped a standard decathlon waterproof holdall onto the same rack along with two DH bikes to give a bit more capacity when we are 7-up in the car
Thanks for the suggestions, I've got a while before I need something so I think I'll look at ways to adapt the bike carrier (Thule RideOn 9503).
I think Thule make a box that is specifically designed to fit some of their bike racks.
Edit - they do, but with the classic Thule price tag and only for the Velospace XT

I've been merrily recommending these bak rak things to all and sundry for years in the hope that someone would buy one and give some first hand opinion before I shelled out on one.
Now, a month after I spend a fortune on a buzzrack, there you are 🙁
I bought a Buzzrack one last summer.
Paired with the largest box Ikea do for mats and bedding and then the tent strapped on top.
Meant we could get at the camping gear first as soon as we turned up.
Didnt budge a mm on the drive down the A30 from Devon to Cornwall.
Since then it's been spot on for putting a dumpy bag of garden waste on when taking a large load to the tip.

Bak rak's seem more expensive than buzzracks these days

This is my current plan. Use my Thule 9503 with the bike rails flipped over. I'll prob remove the middle rail and wedge+strap something like this between the remaining 2, prob with a waterproof bag strapped on top too.

It's easier to strap a flexible bag on in my opinion, you could probably do it without taking anything off your rack
Thanks. I have one of these, which is what I was thinking of strapping to the top of the box, but just getting a couple more of them instead might be the best idea.
