Planning for the summer. Need an exciting route perhaps 25miles per day. Camping and B&B? What would you do? Rebellion way? Coasts and Castles ? Coast to Coast?

We have done coast and castles with children just a bit older and it was a lovely route. Took the inland route from berwick to Innerleithen then up to Edinburgh.

If you have toured with children before you will know this, but don't be too ambitious with daily time in the saddle, don't overload them, get off the bikes and explore, keep them very well fed and if possible, choose a route where there's a variety of roads, cycle paths and tracks and interesting places to aim for.

North Wales coast is another. Flat with a lot traffic free. We extended it to start on the wirral. There are a couple of busy bits which can be (almost) avoided. Morecambe bay cycle was is another one I've done with my 7 year old. I'd say if the weather is with you (wild) camping really adds yo the adventure.

In fact on the Morecambe bay route you can finish with a camp on piel Island. Cycle across if you're brave!

The only things they need to carry is their water, snacks and riding gear (small handlebar bag).

Head north to Corran ferry - all traffic free- then ardnamurchan and mull back to oban.

Head south from oban via Loch awe. Then back via islay and colonsay (only 1 boat a week) but a great wee island for mucking about.

Be aware that children that age have no reserves or any ability to plod on at a reduced rate like a grown up usually can. It's all or nothing. Make sure you've got plenty of sugar to put in them - sweets, cola, etc - as that quickly restores the "all" part.

The piel island is a top shout, thanks. I m planning a tour up the West coast, if in the area you could visit the car museum at lakeside, avoiding the lakes crowds.

I rode the Devon coast to coast route with a very bike-keen 7-year old in 2019 and it was brilliant. We rode from Barnstaple to Plymouth over three days (I'd actually planned for four, but he made very good progress). The route is partly on disused railways so is easy going, and the road bits are quiet and mostly traffic-free. There are lots of campsites along the way, and the ones we contacted were amenable to an adult, a child, two bikes and a small tent turning up on the day, so we found changing our plans was easy to do.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread because he's now 10 and we're planning to find something to ride this summer too... 🙂
