Anybody done this : are there any places to stay that have family sizes rooms like a youth hostel maybe? My son is 4 years old.
The only places we have stayed over there are Hotel Ariane and The Albion Hotel in Ypres. Both are very handy for the Menin Gate (you ARE going to go to the piping of the last post, aren't you?) and everywhere else in Ypres, for that matter. Nothing against the Albion, but the Ariane's nicer (and has parking). I'm sure they would be family-friendly. Belgium's like that (not that we have kids, just that everyone's nice).
There are some good restaurants in Ypres, too. I love Den Anker (on Grote Markt, right next to the Lakenhalle. Old Tom was good, too.
Speaking of the Lakenhalle, In Flanders Field museum is fascinating. The simulated gas attack is quite unforgettable.
Plenty more ideas for places to go around there if you need them - it's a wonderful place and very moving.
I was actually going there to see the bike racing (you have heard of the TOUR OF FLANDERS it's a 'Classic') not really the WW1 stuff 🙂
We used to stay in the Campanile in Gent along with some of the womens pro-teams. Bumped into gunn Rita-Dahle and Emma Johansson there. Good access to Gent and to the Tour of Flanders route. On the sunday we went to watch the start of the womens race (cant remember the name of the town off-hand), go for coffee, watch the men come through and then head out to the cobbled sections to watch the men.
We've stayed in Bruges whenever we have been - nice place to stay and handy for the start of the pro race but if doing the sportive then its a bit more faff dependent on which version you do.
Stayed here for cheap and cheerful : http://www.bauhaus.be/
Last couple of times have been here, which has parking which is not all that common in centre of Bruges, they have rooms that will sleep 4 : http://www.goldentreehotel.be/
