Anyone else hear the "rapturous" applause when the new Living Wage was announced?

I can't but help thinking that most Tories there really aren't too keen on it. You know, helping out the commoners.😁
Don't see the problem really as I doubt it will ever be implemented anyway. Though since this new money tree was found a few weeks back, who knows?

(Yes, I'm aware that the large "burden" of this pay increase is on the private sector.... Which they wouldn't be happy about in the best of times.... and this definitely isn't the best of times!)

Taking silver spoons out of the mouths of those who can barely afford their second Audi?

Quietly forgotten next week.
You'll never hear about it again.

It may have been announced but it’s nothing else but a “target”, and as we know a target can be moved........which it will have to be once our economy tanks due to Brexit. ****ing cockwombles🤬

Putting up minimum wage will mean fewer people qualifying for means tested in-work benefits, so a reduction in government spending.

So a kind of stealth tax on employers.

Expect to see an increase in robots and automation.

“Nicky Morgan, what has happened to you?” I’ve seldom seen so much political capital lost in such a short time me on live TV. Newsnight if interested.

@TiRed

yep, just watched it and there’s absolutely nothing positive to take from any of those interviewed on the program, Dominic Cummings is now running the Conservative party for his own gain.

Nope....I tried but only lasted 15mins.......couldn't bring myself watch any more of the Tory conference that came on after newsnight, watching javid announce money for roads/buses/minimum wage/youth schemes whilst the camera panned to that vile creature priti patel with her strained sneer was too much at this time of night.

A plague is coming........

What an utter raft of ****s.

Apparently today is ‘Law’n’Awder’ day

Are we having a sweep on how many minutes in we get before someone demands bringing back hanging?

‘Law’n’Awder’ day

New punishment for public servants who have lied to the public and state?

One can but dream.

Also sexual assault, racism, inciting violence and fraud would be good ones to cover today...

I wonder when the Tories will come and hold their annual conference in Liverpool... 😂

We'll make them feel very welcome.

It doesn't make any difference where they hold it, they never leave their compound, ringed as it is with armed police. They're nominally in Manchester. They might as well be on the moon

Bunch of self serving ..

Even the FT agrees..

You don’t have to read too many profiles of Boris Johnson before you notice a particular epithet recur. People have many and varied opinions about the odds-on favourite to be Britain’s next prime minister. But almost everyone, it appears, thinks he is a clown.

It’s easy to see why. The eccentric appearance, at least by politicians’ standards: wild hair, unkempt dress. The exaggerated gestures: windmilling arms, excitable hands. The outlandish props: waving around a kipper at a hustings to illustrate a (completely false) claim about British fishing and Brexit. Mr Johnson has a talent for comic showmanship above and beyond the arch verbal wit typical of British political humour.

Yet while the term “clown” is often used as an insult, it is in fact a compliment Mr Johnson does not deserve

How exactly is Priti Patel, a re-appointed government minister who lied about secret meetings with foreign leaders and government officials going to lecture us about law and order and truth and justice.

Surely the only question any journalist worth their pay-packet should ask is: "Are you taking the piss?"

When your 65yr old mother starts to take a interest in politics due to lunatics taking over the asylum and mentions “I’d wipe that bloody* smirk off her face” in reference to Priti Patels speech you know we still have a chance to turn this around, don’t mess with someone born in a Glencoe croft kitchen alongside the farm animals.

* she may have said ****ing, my mums not one to mince her words, or hold back her opinion

Edit : watching it now on bbc2 with her, couldn’t really repeat what she is now saying as we are watching Pritis speech and those clapping acolyte inbred chinless arse suckers in the audience are creeping her out....

Johnson has reviled himself as an Environmentalist

"remember it was only a few years ago when people were saying that solar power would never work in cloudy old Britain and wind turbines would not pull the skin off a rice pudding. Well there are some days when wind and solar are delivering more than half our energy needs.

We can do it,

We can beat the sceptics”

He is, of course referring only to himself.

How do you deal with someone so free of shame or reason? What deep part of the human mind has been discovered that means that there's a point when someone is so completely without credibility, they some how become credible to their fans at least.

In excellent overseas trade news Boris Johnson announced today that the UK is successfully exporting Jason Donovan CD's to North Korea*

*Yes. He actually did say that.

Well, that's the economy sorted then.

Time to them to go home for a self congratulatory line of toot.

ye gods.

"we're different to a lot of european countries, we've got history"

People defending Boris' trustworthiness, almost universally retiree age.

Apparently inappropriate touching is ok.

Apparently lying is ok.

Brave lad asking about giving the vote to 16 year olds, bet his answer was "no", we never heard it.

We are totally screwed as a nation with this lot of self-serving, narcissistic, deluded muppets 'leading'* our country (* in the very loosest sense of the word).

Interesting to see on the Owen Jones video that Mark Francois, the weekend warrior, refused to speak to Jones. For that reason alone Owen Jones has gone up significantly in my estimation.

Also notable was the difference in attitude towards Boris between generations with the older / middle aged Tories saying they trusted Boris and the young ones saying they didn't trust him.

Btw did I hear that Owen Jones is putting himself forward to stand for Labour in a constituency in Coventry? He might have to cut back on pleasing his Guardian bosses with his anti-Corbyn snipes.

That Marina Hyde piece is a magnificent piece of polemic. How it can be so amusing and terrifying simultaneously is remarkable.

Agreed. I'ver just read it and was alternating between giggling and horrified for most of the piece.

It's worrying as hell though.

To be fair, if she’d have been around today, this lot would have taken one look at a wish-washy, pro-EU liberal like Fatcha, called her a traitor and promptly booted her out of the party.

Actually they’d probably have kicked Norman Tebbit out for not being Brexity enough

I though OJ was part of the "JC is the new Messiah" crowd, whereas the Grauniad is more balanced on the issue...
