With all the impending doom, I’ve been looking at my meagre torch collection and it coming up a bit light in the prepper stakes.

Whats your goto artisanal organic 2xAA torch. Something I can hold in my mouth when fighting off the nuclear zombies with two chainsaws.

Would prefer something UK made but appreciate that might be moon on a stick.

Edit: needs to waterproof due to all the zombie blood and also used as small club/tappy thing.

Sticking needles under finger nails.

Applying a decent voltage through the testicles. A personal favourite.

I still use a maglite (led).
The output is pathetic compared to anything modern of course, but it’s reliable.

Isn't that what they're supposed to do?

2AA? Why?

Get an Olight with a mag charger and you're laughing.

My daily is a little heavy but it's the S2R ii in Copper. Got a mag charger in the car and a few at home. Battery lasts ages. Bright enough. Just wished moonlight mode was a little dimmer but hey...

Something from Olight, or if you're a torch snob, something from a different brand

Another happy olight user. Got a tiny single AAA light that I take most places and gives a huge amount of light for its miniscule size. Also have a couple of single 18650 lights that are basically pocket sized instant daylight.

Have an Olight S15R baton which is palm sized and brilliant. And a new Olight Warrior mini 2 which is a bit brighter on every setting and like a mini sun on ‘turbo’ - it’s also slightly bigger than palm sized with some kind of ridged rim for getting up close and personal with any zombies, cabinet members etc.

Happy with Klarus. The smallest can run off aa rather than 14500 but you get much lower output. Handy if it a zombie attack and the torch has gone flat whilst sat in the drawer.

The larger klarus has a swivel head from 0 deg to 90 deg plus magnetic base. Just seem nicely made torches

I own 2* zanflare f1 and a recently bought a Wuben c3 torch which is my off roading helmet torch as it is lighter than the zanflare f1.

2AA isn't a particularly good form factor these days. Multiple AAs or AAAs are to get the voltage up, in which case you're better off with a lithium ion powered light. It's also quite long for mouth holding. Single AA is still good, but the extra power you get from something lithium ion powered is rather impressive

They write themselves sometimes, don't they.

Anything that’ll take a 14500 cell will be more than bright enough, they’re 3.7v, and overdrive the emitter, so often putting out 5-600 lumens. I’ve got several little TrustFire lights, one failed in the switch, but I’ve still got three that work just fine. The model is the R5-A3, I used to have two mounted on my bike bars, and one on my crash hat, and they were quite bright enough to ride lanes at night.

This is what it looks like, but sadly it might have been discontinued, which is a shame. Mine must be at least ten years old. ☹️

They were only about £11 on Amazon, too.

This might fit the bill, I’ve got an Imalent flashlight, an MS03, but it’s not really pocket friendly, it’s certainly not a keyring torch, and it’s a bit of a monster, with 13,000 lumens, which if it gets turned on accidentally, will genuinely give a nasty burn on full! It melted a hole through the thick nylon belt holster I carried it in. This one is much more carriable - https://heinnie.com/imalent-ld10

Here’s an in-depth review…

I've a brace of 3 D cell maglites. One anodized green, the other anodized red. Port and Starboard basically.

I had an idea to convert them to led rechargeable, you know, drill a hole in the end cap, fit a charging socket, fit internals etc, but I've no experience in that type of thing so it's unlikely to happen.

I have a 3x D-cell Maglite. I upgraded it with the official LED upgrade. It's still shit.

I think the whole raison d'etre of a 3D Mag is "it's just a torch, officer" after you've brained a bike thief.

What does it mean in the descriptions when it says runtime is "3 minutes + 100 minutes"?

At a guess 3 minutes on full before a lumen drop

I've got a few Olights - a AAA single cell always on my keyring, but this is probably my favourite for size/output

What i'd be using for a torch is my Exposure Toro. 2000lm for 2h, though drop the power and you get a fairly bright light for lighting your way and a 12h runtime.

This one may well fit the OP’s requirements;

https://www.lumintoponline.com/products/tool-aa-2-0?variant=39740346531876

It’s available from Amazon, for around £25, it’s compatible with AA and 14500 Li-ion rechargeable cells, and you can swap the clicky tailcap for one where you twist for on, and which has a magnet built in, which is rather handy. I’ve got a couple of them, unbranded, which I got through a kickstarter-type promotion, and they’re pretty robust little torches. I have one in my little toolbox at work, I often use it for holding vinyl decals in place, and for highlighting air bubbles in the decals, using it obliquely. Get several 14500 batteries, charge them up and carry them around in a plastic battery case, with the torch on a lanyard, it’s a cheap and reliable compact little light.
I genuinely use one every day, I can’t recommend them more highly than that. I would have recommended it before, it’s only now, after looking through a list of recommended pocket ‘tool’ flashlights that I spotted mine listed and realised it was actually a Lumintop - mine are several years old now, which is why I’d forgotten the make.

Temped to get another one, and a couple more batteries, it’s such a reliable little torch.

Here’s the review list the Lumintop was on - there’s a couple more cheap-ish lights on there that use USB-C and magnetic charging that might be appealing, because they can be recharged from a power-pack.

Bought one of the lumintops from Amazon. Very tempted with the Wurkkos FC12 in the link you posted.

Now all I need is a decent one for my key ring.

May I suggest a Hank light? Had an Emisar D4s for a while (not my face torch) but a firm fave in the Reddit/flashlight/budget light market. Strangely pretty too.
