Our luck doesn't seem intent on changing any time soon as on top of my wife's continued recovery from cancer, our daughter broke her leg on Friday evening and now has a cast up to her mid-thigh. Needless to say it's proving quite a challenge having to carry her to the essentials etc as she's not able to try and use the frame they've given her yet and the cast is heavy too, especially for a 7 year old. We're back in clinic tomorrow so hoping for more information.

So those of you whose children have suffered similar, how did you go on with school etc? What did you find helped keep them mobile? She's always very active too which will be hard for her to cope with. Else we're working out how to cope with 6 weeks of High School Musical and Disney!

You have my sympathy but I have nothing else to give 'cept a bump. Plus this serves as a bookmark for when my one-girl wrecking crew does something similar. It's only a matter of time.
Good luck and here's hoping you have a downstairs loo 😀

When my kids broke his leg, he too had a full leg cast. I found that after a couple of days he was able to walk withut and walking aids of any sort and after 4 days he was able to run up and down stairs easily with the cast on. He was full weight bearing though.

My point here is that kids are much better at this than adults are. Your kid will be grand.

Watch them using rulers or knitting needles to scratch an itch. You don't want them breaking the skin under the cast.

Get lots of signatures on the cast, good luck.

Thanks both, it's only day two so hoping she'll soon get bored and start trying to move herself. Only worry is school and loo etc there.

I had toe to thigh cast for a Tib & Fib at that age. Took me about a week to get the hang of crutches, but it was tiring and sore so we ended up borrowing a wheelchair for longer trips out. Can't remember loo being a worry, but baths were a non starter so my mum just flannelled me instead.

Oh, I remember lots of jigsaws. Video games and iPads weren't much of an option in 1973.

You will be given a leaftlet for a company called Limbo to purchase a cover for the cast. You can buy them cheaper online and from some of the bigger Boots shops.
