Fastest i've travelled on a public road was 140mph in a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo heading East-bound on the M62
How about you and what were the circumstances? Proof pics welcome of course and any form of transport counts but must be on land.
Over to you...
48mph in central edinburgh.

This thread will be met with the usual responses! Me personally, 160 on an old fzr exupp , racing a cossie some 18 ish years ago whilst riding pillion in a ski jacket and plastic helmet, 155 in a prodrive Mazda on a track day and finally 140 in the preza whilst the wife was ten minutes away from giving birth, waters broke walking across the carpark!
legally - 175mph zx9r autobahn between Dusseldorf and Cologne
illegally - 175mph zx9r on an A road...
wrightyson - to think if you had carried the missus across the car-park she would have made it 'waters in tact'..
shame one you 😀
140, M62 Eastbound, Police traffic officer in passenger seat yelling go! go! go!
Somewhere in excess of 140mph on a Suzuki 1100 Katana. It was early morning (around 3am) and I'd just finished a night shift. One short section of what is now the Edinburgh Bypass had been opened so I thought it would be fun to see just how it would go. Those bridges don't half fly by at that speed. By the time the headlamp had picked them up, I was under them. That bend over the Water of Leith approaching Baberton/Wester Hailes is actually quite a tight corner at those speeds!!
60mph in a car.
meehaja - if you were chasing me - i never saw you officer I swear 😳
I'm slow in comparison. 138mph (indicated) in a Boxster S between Bristol and Bath. I drove that car for 45mins and it needed 6 days in the garage!
14118.20mph on my trek remedy today according to map my ride 😯 i win
I'm a real jessie with speed on public roads- I've only been at about 90 on a motorway when I'd just passed my test. I daren't do it now as my job depends on driving. I'd love to go to a track day and get some proper beans on.
On the M8 coming east just past Harthill in a BMW 530i.
145mph on the speedo and I checked the sat nav after and it said the max was 138mph.
Less than you lot.
amsterdan - i trust you were helmeted... 😯
My mate often goes for rides, shares it on FB and burns 11 kcals - he swears his settings were wrong - i say he's been to the pub and busted.
This is all completely reprehensible. 140mph indicated (which wouldn't be too far off) on the motorbike coming down the M9, absolutely topped out and sounding like the pistons might make a bid for escape. Poor wee thing.
157 mph in my old type r, quoted top speed was 146.
I miss that car...
i did about 78mph in a 1981 mini metro on the A1 once, and it was by far the most frightening thing anyone has ever done
145 on the A5, Kawasaki GPZ900R about 15 years ago. Managed 87 miles in 40 minutes in France on the way back from Le Mans, Adville bypass, ZRX11.
Not the highest speed, but the highest average.
Castle Coombe to Oxford road in reading in 27 minutes. 5 track of the cd I was listening that the time.
Around 130 on an RC30. I cacked myself shortly after and backed right off.
That bike got to 100 so fast it was incomprehensible.
155 in a hybrid
157 mph in my old type r, quoted top speed was 146.
I miss that car...
Knock the 5-10% speedo error off and you probably didn't reach the top speed.
I've done an indicated 140 twice on a Speed Triple but the small screen I had caused do much turbulence it was impossible to hang on any longer even though it was still pulling hard
Current Ducati ST3s has a fairing and should better that in comfort but we mostly ride 2 up with luggage and I don't hold three figures for long, or that often.
Personally, a lot less than you lot. In a mate's Legacy, 140.
i did about 78mph in a 1981 mini metro on the A1 once, and it was by far the most frightening thing anyone has ever done
Try 90mph in a plastic pig (Reliant Robin) with 4 people in it. I'm genuinely surprised we lived.
152 in my first car, an e-plate honda crx
150 in an old type-r
140+ in a megane 225 sport
135 in a lamborghini murcielago
148 in the new type r
Always like to top my cars out when i first get them ( on an autobahn your honour)
Now, if i go above 75 i'm going too quick 🙁 ( bloody fuel prices)
I have calmed down a lot as I have aged but 140 in an Audi A6 on the M58. I also had a great average from Ashford Tunnel Terminal to Liverpool, Walton 298 miles in just under 3 hours. Its really hard averaging a ton for 3 hours.
Been caught speeding twice over a ton, let off both times!
Rc30!! Capable of 100 in 2nd gear if I'm not mistaken and a bike of nearly 15 yrs old! Awesome machine! All of the above why I drive a van daily and ride a bike that'll go as fast as I pedal it. Born and bred tt bikes etc, Manx/rac rally and I'm not allowed a motorbike! 🙄
And after all that the most stupid thing I ever did in a car was 9 up in a ford galaxy to Bradford airport with luggage for a stag do! "It'll be a laugh if we all pile in" I was told, never been so scared!!
Have also done 140 in an old Sapphire Cossie my Dad had - loved that car 😀 Basic inside (wind down windows in back) 😯 but hellfire it fealt fast when I was a kid.
The coupe fealt even faster tho' specially during acceleration - for those that have driven a powerful Front-wheel drive car - the torque-steer can be monumental 😯
I forgot this one! Compare an Astra gte trying to race my uncles rs 500 between (if I remember) Wollaton and Sutton park stages!
43.5mph on a road bike.
52.5mph on a MTB.
180mph indicated in an E39 M5 (the 4.9 V8).
All down hill though, so none of them count.
132 in an ancient 3L Cosworth Scorpio on the way to Edinburgh where it was due to have its heart ripped out and transferred to a Capri. But I did it sideways, with the engine periodically cutting out, which gives extra points.
170mph indicated on a slightly tweaked naked bandit 1200 so i guess 150mph for real, 100mph in a VW Beetle GT, 85mph on my 180cc Gilera Runner SP, 127mph on a KTM Duke 2, 80mph on a Vespa GTS 250, 125mph on an RD350YPVS, 35mph on a MTX50, 55ish in a DT50 (ok it had a DT80 engine bored out to 95cc!), 130ish on a KR1, 115ish on a TDR250... i drive a Berlingo now and my licence is clean 🙂
Mach 1.1 in a very steep dive!
700 knots ground speed coming back across the Atlantic.
155 pillion on a mates bike - never again!!
Got beaten to the aeroplanes! Regularly achieve 500mph going to meetings across Europe!
Fastest I've driven is about 140mph - once in an Audi A6, only to see a police car travelling the other direction as I was about to touch the rev limiter in 6th. I can still remember the coppers face!
Also topped out a Vectra V6 Sri thingy (hire car 🙂 ) on the M69. Engine was a bit looser after that.
However, the scariest moment was V-max in an extremely silly Hillman Imp I had. The engine was good for 8500rpm, but getting beyond 6500 in 4th was tricky. Either way that's a good 105mph. Wound it up as hard as it would go on the A50 one early Sunday morning whilst playing silly buggers with a mate in a Ford Fairlane on the way to Donington.
At 95mph there were two loud 'clunks' and it got noisier.
Turns out the aerodynamics are so bad that the doors get sucked off the latches by half an inch. As I was 20 years old I did the mature thing and kept my foot in....
Yeh, bloody prog rock27 minutes. 5 track of the cd I was listening that the time.
were you trying to kill yourself ? 😉
Glencoe to Lincoln in under 4hrs. Saw something like 7 cars in all that time and they were all absolutely flying.
A1 with a pillion on a blackbird. 180 ish on the clock (wasn't looking down too much). It was still pulling but I bottled it due to my eye balls rattling so much I couldn't see the road. There was so much wind force on my head and chest I was struggling to close the throttle.
http://video.google.com/
It wasn't very fast, hire car - 1.8 focus on the autobahn. As fast as it would go. It lasted about an hour before we broke it.
Also been pillion on a my brothers Firestorm. He reckons it was 140. It was both terrifying and funny
27 minutes. 5 track of the cd I was listening that the time.

Bloody iPad ..... Need to proof read. 🙂
GSXR1000, sitting on the speed limiter watching my friend on his very tuned and de-restricted ZX12-R leaving me behind.
155 limited in a BMW 530d Sport Tourer on the autobahn near Austria.
I had a Porsche 911 up my chuff flashing his lights, I rapidly pulled over.
It was too fast for me that, didn't enjoy it. Happy to cruise along at 100 though, autobahns only mind.
Glencoe to Lincoln in under 4hrs.
Thats an AVERAGE speed of about 90mph! 😯
145mph down the Creg, Mad Sunday, 1992.
Pillion on my mates Kawa Z750 Turbo.
Then about 115mph in exactly the same place riding a YPVS350 later the same day.
125mph on a 350LC? What did you do, throw it out of a plane? 😀
Glencoe to Lincoln in under 4hrs.Thats an AVERAGE speed of about 90mph!
And almost definitely bullshit. Why? Because:
Saw something like 7 cars in all that time
Is a lie. I know a lot of those roads are motorway, but even in the early hours you'd see hundreds of cars in that 360 mile journey.
Vehicles capable of doing that average speed? Motorbike possibly, but you'd be stopping for fuel at least twice, more like 3-4 times as they drink fuel at speeds like that, and then we're talking super/hyper cars, not some plodding M-Series BMW or similar.
Remember, every time you stop or slow down you've got to double your speed to make the time up.
I know how fast I have to go to do the 50 miles from my mother-in-laws house to ours in under and hour (On a motorbike) and, sorry, but you ain't doing that journey in 4.
To be fair the Stan Stephens tuned LC's were good for about 140 but would go bang very regularly 😆
My fastest is on a bike a very worked on EXUP speedo was saying about 180 so most probably about 165ish it was still going but those speeds on roads is very very unsafe.
Had my gixxer 750 tapped out on the A449, didn't look at the speedo, Raglan to Usk seemed to happen in a flash, slowed down when a caravan pulled out about a mile in front and before I had time to really think about it I was on top of it. He was doing about 55 so the closing speed was just ridiculous. No real drama but that has always made me think.
Back in the summer when driving over to Sweden a M3 came past on an autobahn flat chat, I reckon I could see about 2.5 miles of road and it was out of sight in about 20 seconds, unreal to see that on a public road.
185mph. Autobahn. 650bhp r33 gtr. (as a passenger)
120 in an old cavalier sri130. Between Perth and Dundee.
Late for lectures and a fellow student gave us a lift. Was scary tbh (and stupid) but we made the lecture.
Done a lot of silly things in my life but have never ventured much over 110..I have enough metalwork in my legs already so motorbikes are not in the equation..
Pigface - MemberTo be fair the Stan Stephens tuned LC's were good for about 140 but would go bang very regularly
I'm not sure you know. 😀
We all had LC's, and the highly tuned ones were never, ever as fast as they were supposed to be, even when they'd just been fettled by Mr Stephens or Mr Barlow:
By the time they'd been run in, they'd either seized again or the jetting had mysteriously 'gone off' 🙂
I remember a test in 'Bike' years ago when a fully tuned Stephens' LC managed about 125mph.
They did sound nice though.
What do you reckon the modern day equivalent to an LC is ?
GSXR600? Triumph Daytona?
There isn't a modern equivalent IMO
I remember reading a copy of Bike where the police were chasing a SS LC 350 and reckoned it was going 135 on the Kingston bypass. The front cover was a kid on an LC with a Bandit on and a green flight jacket. He was doing a burnout and the rev counter was just buried 😆
Hey maybe we remember different things 🙂
Thing is with some of these speeds people are quoting did you feel unsafe? The preza had got more in the tank but I felt uneasy, it was 3am so nothing around on a dual carriageway so other cars were not an issue, but things started to feel light and generally a bit wishy woshy!
140mph up the A1 near Sheffield, topping out my Dad's Audi A4 after some chavs in an Escort started racing me. Seriously slowed down after having to use both lanes to get round a corner. Never been even close to as fast as that since. Stupid.
scariest was doing 95mph down the A1 in my Nova 1.4 - downhill with a tailwind. the rattling was deafining and the steering felt so light that I thought the wheels were off the ground. that was easily the most reliable car I have ever had though.
it was 10 years olds when I sold it and I hadn't done a bit of maintenance to it, apart from fitting a bean-can exhaust, and it looked like it had just come out of the showroom.
145 in a type r most days, replaced with van to save my licence now.
Brilliant car but got passed by an old guy in a focus rs every morning.
As fast as a CBR600/VFR750/Fireblade would go (on the road).
As fast as Hayabusa would go (on a disused airstrip). Probably around the 180-190 mark. Didn't feel any faster than 150 tbh but trying to stop was interesting 😀
Not been much over 100 in a car. Don't see the point.
49.9mph road bike
62mph mtb (on road)
142 sierra cosworth, early 3 door example (passenger)
160mph zzr 1100 d1 (with a ferrari 355 beside me, he matched me from 80-160, i rolled on the throttle in top)
all indicated speeds, almost definately some speedo error.
no way would i go past 100 now, depend on my licence for work.
the noise from the ferrari still makes my spine tingle.
Maxed out Blackbird so ~185 mph. As above, dint feel much faster than 150mph (when space & time start to bend) and I dint spend much time at that speed. Mainly due to being punched in the kidneys by SWMBO......
as a passenger in the fathers car. 180mph average along the autobahn in a Ford Capri with a Rover V8 tuned by the ex next door neighbour who was a formula 1 tuning technician at the time. Scary fast.
Personally, 120mph. The girlfriend rang me at 0300 saying she was feeling frisky & I was 50 miles away.
145 indicated on the M25.
Saab 9000 2.3T , slightly overboosted by a couple of psi.
It got rather boaty and the steering went very light. Great car for point to point driving on single carriageway A roads. Lines of cars dispatched in seconds. Tricky bit was keeping it in a straight line and slowing down to pull into a gap . Leathal on anything but bone dry roads . Gearbox failed in the end . 🙁

185mph. Autobahn. 650bhp r33 gtr. (as a passenger)
The fastest - correct me if i'm wrong.
Passenger (3 up) in new style Skyline GTR with >700bhp. More than 180mph, tried to Endomondo it but weirdly it just gave me an error. UK roads too.
Did I feel safe?
Mine was in a new (OK, 1500ml old) Boxster S, roof down. Wind noise was pretty bad, but rock stable, and it'd go a lot faster (I'd guess) without things getting scary. Other traffic is what made me slow dow, I ran out of empty road! The odd thing was the lady sitting next to me (who worked for Porche Bristol, a friend hence why i was driving the car) as I drove the nuts off this car was more concerned about the track on the stereo. I asked her afterwards if she was at all concerned by the speed to which she replied, nah, everyone drives like that on a a test!
Fasted average was 70mph, Bath - Southampton leaving at 12:30am, one of those drives where just everything clicks, every car lined up to be overtaken on wide open, straight roads and I felt like a driving god. I still remember I had Global Underground, departures on the CD player. The car? a 1.4 Clio RT. Proud I was!
I can't compete in out and out speed, but I reckon I win in the speed/non-sportiness ratio.
130mph in my 2.0 Passat TDI for reasonable distances, on the Autobahn. Problem is, 130mph is too fast for the middle lane but not fast enough in the outside lane 😯 it's strange to be going that fast and have some bloke in a Merc come rapidly up behind flashing his lights. It is good though to be on a long journey, being bored and wishing you were home, and being able to floor it. Grew out of it after a couple of months mind.
But for the win, 100mph in a 950cc fiesta MkII. A hill was involved. This was before I knew about tyre speed ratings and the fact my dad used to by remoulds.
as a passenger on the back of a GSXR100 150mph odd, horrible experience. Driving myself, 135mph on the M62
Edit: Molgrips, my 135 was in a 320d, also did 99/100 in a 1.2 punto, come onnnnnn!
Average speed is so hard to maintain!! Did wadebridge to belper last month in 4hrs 1min. 283 miles according to google maps. Didn't leave Cornwall till 7pm and spanked it the whole way home.
Thing is with some of these speeds people are quoting did you feel unsafe?
The Passat was perfect up to about 110mph, above that it got a bit noisy and by 120 it started to feel just a smidge less secure.
The Fiesta otoh was fine at that speed!
Fastest was probably 88 in my old '81 DeLorean DMC 12. Used to leave these sweet flames down the road.
Gutted to see it go, but sold to a young lad and his grandad. Always wandered what happened to it.
178mph indicated on a demo R1 just north of Rochester on the A68. The R1 was so much faster than my own GSXR750 it was unreal!
92mph on my 1969 Lambretta(genuine, GPS and rev vs gearing calculation, very tuned engine) was far and away more frightening than any speed on the R1. I think 95mph is doable with a bit of fiddling with the jetting!
146 civic TypeR (3 of them) all maxed out on autobahn en route to Mayrhofen.
160 Makinen evo 6 autobahn again to mayrhofen.
at 170 GSXR 1000 I got scared and backed all the way off and had to have a sit down. It had done 130 in 3rd! motorbikes are scary... very scary.
An indicated 155mph in my old MR2 Turbo, so more like a real world 140mph. Still had a fair bit to go on the rev counter but the undertrays decided to make a bid for freedom and scared the bejeesus out of me. I don't think I've topped 100 since, even though my current car is significantly quicker than the MR2. It's just not about the out and out speed anymore.
[edit] wrong thread.
I took my Berlingo to 100mph (indicated) on an autobahn in Germany yesterday. It was slightly downhill with a following wind. Not bad for a 1.6 75hp fully-loaded-with-kit. 😆
163mph in my old derestricted M3 on a private road in the midlands somewhere at about 1am.
202mph as a passenger h in a Ruf R Turbo at Brungtingthorpe on a vmax day about 8 years ago.
What an amazing piece of kit that was - made it seem easy!
159.66 MPH at Bruntington Proving Ground as a passenger in my mates old Nova with timing gear strapped on.
165mph. Aprilia RSV1000
I've accidently wheelied at 150mph hitting a dip in the surface. Brown trousers moment.
Flat out in my Leon FR when i'd not had it long just over 140mph, still felt totally solid at that speed.
My brother has a tuned Evo VIII, its good for 180mph, never managed more than 160 in it though, roads disappear really fast at that speed
More than double the motorway speed limit on a tuned ZX636R with a calibrated speedo (on private roads obviously)
