Just in case you'd forgotten and hadn't already moaned about something today.

I've been watching Battlestar Galactica with the kids. Top Gear seems just a bit tired and second-rate in comparison.

Yep the Saab item was great. I like it when them pair actually talk cars instead of blowing them up. They did a piece on Russian cars a while ago which was good as well.

Might be on my list of wants along with an A5, but who was the company that's supplying parts they mentioned at the end?

Can't believe that when I was a kid the SAAB turbo seemed like an exotic rocket ship and now I drive a little hatchback that's quicker than it to 60 by 2 seconds.

Still would love to have the black one from the show tonight, and I'm not even an architect.

slainte 😀 rob

Saabs were brilliantly engineered. I especially liked the handbrake adjustment on my 900 16v.

Have you seen the price of SAAB's now? You get a hell of a lot of car for 5k.

@ davidjones15
As it happens I know a bit about this... When they were sold by GM, as part of the deal the parts business in Saab was made a separate company. It is still going, so not technically new. Some parts have been in short supply during the bankruptcy but getting better rapidly.

And Saab may yet survive - rumours abound that the receivers are talking to lots of potential buyers. Of course it may just be rumours, and none may be serious, but Saabs have always been indestructible...

That sounds positive as there are some rather tasty SAABs out there for very little money. Parts supply in the wake of the bankruptcy was an important factor.
There might be a new SAAB thread in the near future.
Cheers.

Top Gear was ok I thought.
I would buy a Maserati for the sounds and the styling alone.
SAAB piece was good apart from the fact that they were sad that a car manufacturer that they said was rubbish, bar the 99 Turbo, had gone bust.
It's that kind of contradictory bollocks that winds me up about Clarkson.

The best bits are the features on brands.

The top ten brands ever was great.

Rest of it gets worse and worse...

I think mcmoonter got it right - 'Saabs WERE brilliantly engineered'.......and then GM bought into them and donated their dodgy parts bin. Reliability fell to below average, and Saab became a liability.

GM are still the bad guys though, because the only reason Saab have gone to the wall is that GM have refused to hand over technical data to the Chinese, the Indians and just about anybody bar the Irish, and have thus obstructed a successful sale. Spyker was always going to be stop-gap without bigger investment.

Yes, it seems that getting parts will now become easier, but there are still issues for people with newer Saabs under warrantee - who will honour it? Still, lots of bargains to be had, and there are some brilliant Saab specialist garages out there - they always were better and more sussed than the main dealerships.

And if Saab is at some stage reborn, wouldn't it be nice to get back to functional but quirky design AND bullet proof reliability - just like the 99s, 900s and 9000s referred to in TG?

Not completely true. There were many potential buyers, including Russian money, that were forbidden by the Swedish govt.

It's easier to blame GM, I suppose. Even though without their cash SAAB would have gone the way of Rover many years before.

Top Gear seems to be aimed at 11 year old kids now, which is fine, my son (11 yrs old..) loves the show, but shouldn't they just put it on CBBC where it feels like it belongs, and maybe commission a motoring show for adults for BBC2?

My first car was a 99, Dad bought it new in 1971 and passed it on to me 13 years later with 150,000 miles on the clock, a great bit of kit and one that he was reasonably sure wouldn't end up killing me in my first year of car ownership.

Brilliantly engineered, he still runs SAABs and plans on his current one lasting out his driving years

It's more of a 'fun' show than a serious motoring show and has been for years, get over it.

Unless all of you are in the market for a pointless £110k car and felt the piece wasn't thorough enough for you. In which case you should trundle off to your local Merc dealer and arrange some sort of regular tyre replacement service with them.

I had a 9-3 and loved it, but my Volvo 850 is better in every respect apart from the turbo sound.

Watch 5th Gear if you want a motoring programme.

How many countries buy 5th Gear and how much money does 5th Gear generate for Channel 5? That's why BBC keep commissioning more series of Top Gear.

I watch it because I like to see fast, expensive cars vrooming about all over the place and I like to laugh. It serves me well on both counts (mostly). I totally understand why some hate it though.

Yup 🙂

The one behind Jezza weren't too shabby neither.

The show is looking a bit tired, last night's was a decent episode though. Best bit was Hammond papping his trews in the rally car.

He certainly appeared a bit odd. But then again he is from Northampton.
