For the lovers of clarkson in the style of Marmite, sign up to get him back (although he hasn't actually gone anywhere (yet)).
support for jezza

He has the backing of Guido Fawkes and Katie Hopkins? He probably finds that reassuring.

Clarkson said a lot of stupid and offensive things but he didn't often (that I can remember) target specific people.

He's got very good lawyers.

I quite liked the guy at first.
Until I realised his act was an extension of his own repulsive personality rather than an Alf Garnett type parody.

Not offended, but you're missing the point. It's different to say your a * and people who use STW are *.

Clarkson said a lot of stupid and offensive things but he didn't often (that I can remember) target specific people.

Yeah, you're right. It's fine for example to say, I hate all gays but it's totally wrong to say I hate Graham Norton.

Any reason they didn't call it a bit of Argy Bargy?

😆

tbh the producer probably deserved it.

JC is crass and often says things that should not but I personally don't think he's racist etc. He just likes to shock to make a point/impact and he takes the piss out of himself more than he does anyone else. He just goes about things in a way that a lot of people don't like and a a result he has ended up a bit like Marmite.

I want to know what the producer said/did before I decide.

But i would say as a license fee payer I want a refund every time they cancel a show.

+1. I'm wondering whether those who still like him haven't worked this out yet, or they actually quite like [s]obnoxious gits[/s] people like him.

Shame he didn't punch the producer of Call The Midwife too because that is what we are doomed to watch on a Sunday evening for the rest of time.

And they all have Scouse accents this time, for added teeth pulling annoyance, 😐

Funny, because I know two people who do and they say he is nothing like his TV persona...

I don't get Top Gear. It's essentially the same programme repeated every episode with slightly different cars.

Race pt 1, unfunny banter, star in car (yawn), more unfunny banter, bit of a semi review, race pt 2, end.

5th gear is like what top gear was like before the reboot. A programme actually about cars. Not a tired middle aged light entertainment show with some allegedly "risqué" humour that has cars in it.

No.
So that's two of us.

However, nothing he has ever said or written has contradicted that statement.
Nothing, in his enitre career.

In fact, his books, his comments, his columns, his actions and his interviews all back up the fact that he really is the reactionary bigot that other people maintain he isn't.

I've neither read, heard or seen a single thing written by or about him that suggests he doesn't believe what he says.

I decide to not watch top gear a couple of weeks back, having not watched much of the last series. Poor re-hashes of the same old same old, and how many people can they offend per programme.
Maybe time for a clean out and new idea.

That's pretty much why I'll never watch 5th Gear - I have zero interest in cars (and haven't owned one for three years). But I do love watching Top Gear.

Well either he manages to keep up the act in public, or he puts on an act with the people you know. You don't remember this?

I thought the programme he narrated (and wrote?) on the WW2 Arctic Convoys was superb - sensitively presented. This may be the missing side of Clarkson that people don't normally see.

I was always a car nut as a kid. Not so much now, but love Top Gear (as does the wife) as light entertainment. Wouldn't watch 5th Gear or any derivative though. Next they'll be making programmes about bikes - how boring would that be? Oh wait....

No different from forming your opinion of Diana from what you've read and saying that she was the queen of hearts/manipulative slapper is it? People are rarely entirely either (and surely pretending to be lovely in public and acting like a **** in private is no better than the alternative is it Junky?)

I think the alternative is that he could be both nice in private and in public

IMHO its not nice to be a **** whether in public or private.
I have never given much thought as to which is worse tbh.

Funny to hear the comments about his horrible comments on various races and countries then suggesting your dream fwap list of women to front a new cars and babes show.

And yes it is the same old stunts but with the new shiney version from this year just like cycling. And this forum.

Not seen much apart from the specials recently but watched all of this series so far, loved it. Car's nobody will ever buy great films from interesting places, and May in the rally cross was hilarious. The argy joke in the show was fairly tame. So if he did punch somebody I guess that's it or not or maybe. I'm guessing most of the haters fall into the never watched it category or those that would really really like an in depth review of a car they can go and test drive tomorrow.

Seems a bit two faced of the BBC.

On one hand they pedal that awful chavy, sh*tcom Eastenders, full of low rent people punching each other (and worse) everynight and yet one little punch from JC and they are all up in arms as if he just started ww3.........

5th gear is like what top gear was like before the reboot. A programme actually about cars.

It is top gear before the reboot - the BBC cancelled (old) Top Gear then later sold the format to C5 keeping the name and clarkson (C5 wanted the name as well but possibly weren't away the BBC were ready to launch a new format with the same brand)

The number of pages generated in here, explains why he will probably stay on TG and the Beeb.

its so obvious he's having a nest feathered for him at Sky.

Well considering his writing commitments are for News International it's not a big leap, the downside would be a drastic cut in the live viewing figures
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_1#Most_watched_programmes
and the hour show would only be about 35mins.

But the international sell on would be the same if they can get the format/rights from the BBC.

Would have been a great opportunity to bring in Chris Harris but then that'd turn it back into a car program and I'm not sure the country/World is ready for that.

I have to admit that even in it's current slightly stale format with some cringe-worthy and I can't imagine quite how that managed to get passed the edit moments, I really enjoy the program. It features some simply wonderful cars and is hosted by 3 guys who obviously love to drive them.

It's massively due a makeover and I'm not sure it'll be the same without any of the personalities but they certainly need to can the in jokes and jolly japes as they're just looking pathetic. That Peugeot piece a couple of weeks ago was a perfect example of the cringeworthy filler they can produce. The less said about the Patagonia Special built around a funny numberplate the better.

Disappointing that we won't now get to see the rest of the features they've put together, I'm sure that in the dross there will have been some gems. Even if most of them will have been because some engineers somewhere did something brilliant.

I can guess that certain personalities come across a certain way in the media, his NoW and Top Gear presenting style certainly seems to point to him being an ignorant twunt.

But if the 5th Gear style was as good as some on here make out it would be trumping TG at the ratings then he wouldn't be able to hold the BBC to ransom since no one would be interested in buying this franchise, Shirley?

He did punch Piers Morgan....in the face.

The guy sold the rights to Top Gear to the BBC a while back, if he gets sacked how do will this affect the BBC and their marketing of Top Gear internationally?
I see only two winners, Clarkson and whoever provides him his next vehicle for broadcast (pun intended).

Surely only a moron would sign a petition to reinstate someone suspended from their place of work whilst under investigation for alleged violence when they knew exactly zero about what happened apart from the scant headlines?

BBC own 50% of the production company, not all of it.

Massive mistake on the BBC's part - someone from 5 Live tweeted that TG generates 5 times the 5 Live budget - how do the BBC intend to fill the revenue shortfall? And what about job losses if the series goes/fails without JC?

Strikes me as the BBC becoming weak and pandering to a vocal minority of Guardian reader types.

Massive global audience figures, magazine spin off, licensing, show and petition signatures suggest they'd be stupid to lose him.

it was only 3 times last night.

All this publicity is pushing the value of Top Gear for the BBC up already!

If you tried to hit your boss would you expect to just carry on as if nothing had happened?

If not then it's not pandering to anyone by suspending Clarkson pending an investigation, it's doing the right thing.

2 1/2 years out of date there I believe. But to be honest irrelevant either way.

As Wwaswas says the 'star' of the show has been suspended pending investigation making the show a bit difficult to air. Nothing has been permanently cancelled that we, the general public, have any knowledge of. I can't see how the BBC could have acted differently. Anyone who thinks they could be accused of allegedly punching a colleague at their place of work and not be suspended pending can be added to my moron list 😉

Harris has said that he's been approached about several "Top gear Style" programmes but turned them down as he's not interested in gimmickry etc, he just likes driving cars. Which is good because he'd be an awful fit on the current TG format.

He's done a piece with Tiff for 5th Gear apparently.

I think Clarkson is the type specimen for total tube. I have two theories on this:

1. he wants to be sacked, so did it on purpose

2. he has lost his marbles (erratic, spontaneous offensive behavior)

I won't miss him. Good show, but will survive without that dork.

TBH even with his vast failings it wouldn't be the same. It'll come across like Top Gear America. You'll watch it but somehow its not right. Almost like you are watching a tribute band at your local pub.

Meanwhile C5's Classic Car show is quite good 🙂

Chris Harris? Why do PH'ers love him so much ❓

You think it is weak to deal with Clarkson hitting someone in the workplace? It would be weakness not to deal with his bullying.

The 'complainant' was not the bloke hit, but some tofu knitting sandal wearing BBC intern who saw a couple of blokes arseing about/bantering from the other side of the room and ran home crying about it, so that by the time it got home to auntie Beeb everything had been blown out of proportion.

The victim was too scared to report it himself, that's how bullying works.

who saw a couple of blokes arseing about/bantering

really?

If it was all 'bants' then the other person involved would have been spoken to prior to Clarkson being suspended and no action would have been taken? Or they'd both have been suspended? Or neither.
