I laughed so hard in that P45 skit I choked on me beer!

Its light entertainment people, its not a serious show - get over it! (& yourselves..)

You do realise it wasn't real life that was black and white in those days don't you ?

Its just the film footage we have of it

Had Deja Vu reading all that ^^^
Same old guff that gets spouted by STW every time a new series of Top Gear starts. Can I join in? 🙂

I thought it was hilarious. I was thoroughly entertained and I'm delighted I have something good to watch on Sunday evening. Even better was the fact The Fighter was on Channel 4 as soon as TG finished, and that was an ACE film. Best Sunday night's TV for a loooonnnggg time.

it all gets very "mary whitehouse" I was so horrified by what i saw...

Did you see the trailer for TG at about 19.00 on BBC1? Ended with a young lady polishing The Stig's helmet... talk about double entendre, before the watershed too 😯

I was outraged.

Wow, even the religious deal better with criticism than you lot. 😀

So it's just as good as it's always been is it?
Not tired at all?
Riiiight.

As fot the motorbike suggestions, it's supposed to be a motoring programme isn't it, not just about cars?
And they've had motorbikes on before. And tanks. Oh, trucks too.
And bicycles, twice.

James May is very good on bikes, he'd be excellent.

But there wouldn't be as much time for the hilarious, spontaneous banter then, would there?

And as I say, it used to be good, for the first three or four series at least.
It's just not very good anymore, is it?

New presenters?
Well, STW seems to have a lot of time for Guy Martin.
Get him in to replace Hammond.
Gavin Green can replace Clarkson & keep James May.

i thought this thread was pre-empted by a "haters get lost bit"

i guesss why let a bit of reading get in the way of a good moan...

So insecure in your Clarkson adoration that you can't take a bit of criticism?

So it's a show that couldn't, ever, be improved?
Nothing you'd like to see changed?

I knew it was on. I didn't bother watching. It's really up to the BBC to stop commissioning it. They should've dropped it several years ago. Perhaps TG could be market tested on ITV?

Why drop it? Clearly there are many people who are thoroughly entertained by it - me included - so in that respect it is a "hit" for the BBC. Is it perfect? Far from it. We'll all have our opinions on what could make any programme better.

I knew Eastenders was on the other day. I didn't bother watching. It's really up to the BBC to stop commissioning it. They should've dropped it years ago.*

*opinion is my own and no one else's.

Ratings aren't the be all and end all.

I suspect there's many a TV executive that would strongly disagree with that sentiment.

Life is full of things that you may or may not like. It's not some unwritten law to like popular stuff. One Direction are popular, but you'd be hard-pressed to find any One Direction fans on here. I don't get why Coronation Street/Eastenders/Emmerdale/Downton Abbey/Dancing on Ice (I could go on) are so popular but I don't get my knickers in a twist about it. Be thankful for choice and don't worry if you don't enjoy something that others do. You've tried it, you didn't like it, move on.

Guy Martin? You must be joking. He just says everything twice followed by 'we owe to them we do' almost in silly self parody (except it's serious). That 'engineering' crap he fronted was total shite.

Top Gear has had it's time but still generates lots of interest (here for example). Last night's was better than a lot if the last series.

So we're not allowed to make suggestions as to how it could be improved?
I'll have to re read the forum rules.

I'd like to see a better Top Gear. Wouldn't you?

Why would they drop a program that makes them so much money ?

Can you explain your logic ?

not a hater, have watched it since it was revamped, but its getting very tired. The P45 was a re-hash of half a dozen other sketches, and even their series trailer shows them being chased and "shot at" by a plane (done in various incarnations) and playing car-rugby, which is a massive leap from the car football theyve done at least twice...

I tuned in looking forward to it, enjoyed May being shouted at in a flying Bentley and the glorious over-the-top steampunk-interior Pagani but switched off a few minutes into the P45 bit which was painful.

If you're watching it so you can come on here and moan about it then it says something about your sad little life

Nope, watched it hoping to be entertained and left a little disappointed that theyve had no new ideas and are re-hashing old ones.

Because quality matters.

If you showed dog fighting or live excecutions, you'd get huge ratings.

Aha, that is indeed the point. Quality of content is subjective. Quality of production is a lot more objective. Top Gear is a relatively high quality TV show in terms of production, but if you think the content is low quality you're not going to enjoy it.

If you showed dog fighting or live excecutions, you'd get huge ratings.

It's depressing to find myself agreeing with this, but TV production companies make TV that the public want to watch and that makes money.

In summary, quality and ratings don't have to be mutually exclusive.

.......And still the whinning continues.

I agree with justme. Guy Martin is completely yampy; he'd fit right in as a fourth presenter.

I love top gear, i wish it was on all day......

I thought that was the whole reason for the Dave Channel? Endless repeats of Top Gear.

Chap up there who suggests binning Clarkson and Hammond, and adding bikes as a way of 'improving' Top Gear?
That's not improving, that's completely changing and will alienate the vast majority of viewers without adding more. People don't watch TG for consumer advice and detailed reviews of cars.

Here's a left field suggestion for people who don't like top gear;
DON'T *ING WATCH IT.
I don't like liver pate. It doesn't offend me at all.....because I don't eat it.
JUST STOP
*ING MOANING.
It's the most widely watched TV programme in the world.

I'm really surprised that a lot of people seemed to like the P45 skit. That bit to me was symptomatic of what is wrong with TG. I was enjoying the rest of the programme and then it went to the "Jeremy's built something crap and now we're going to spend a looooooong time looking at just how crap it is" segment, at which point I totally lost interest.

I guess those bits must be "marmite" to be fair as it looks like a lot of people did enjoy it, but not me...

Forget the guff that its a light entertainment show. If it was purely this they'd make a programme with any product involved. No mainly its for people who LIKE cars. I watch it as there is nothing else car-related on TV.

If only the BBC made our tv programmes, no sky, no one else. What would you do?

I grew up reading JC's back page review in Performance car mag. He was quite scathing in his reviews on cars. Nowadays I can't bare to read his 'review' in the Times mag0 its all about diverging from the topic. I doubt he writes it but hes gone into his own ego. Every car he reviews is 50% nothing to do with the car and the rest him (or a huge airfield FFS). If he reviews a car that isn't V8/2 door and Mercedes et al its lampooned.

**** the detailed 'heres a mirror'. I want how Plato shakes down a car. He knows his onions on dynamics. JC is nowadays almost 'its blue, I like red cars'.

The P50 skit was witty and funny. The P45 was laboured and clockwatching.

This thread isn't really going anywhere any more. Some people like Top Gear, some people don't. We go through it every year. Let's all have a big hug and let it lie.

Some are, some are just plainly slagging it off having watched it knowing they dislike the show. This last episode wasn't far removed from the last four+ series so we know what we're getting.

I was hoping for a thread where we can talk about Top Gear in a positive light to cheer up my day, but it soon descended into the usual. The negativity can get a bit wearing <wonders why he's still here/>

It's like starting an "I love my Orange 5" thread then waiting for the Orange 5 haters to turn up 😆

It's more in sadness than in anger.

As I've said, what, four times now, I used to like it.

I've tried to make some sensible suggestions as to how it can be improved, imho.

I've asked people if they they think it could be improved and how.

But obviously it can't be improved.
It's just perfect as it is.
The BBC would collapse tomorrow if one hair on it's boring, tedious, reptitive, cliched, childish little head was moved even slightly out of place.

I'm tired of making sensible suggestions, so here's a frivolous one - let's have a punch up between Piers Morgan and Clarkson, live on air.
We could hang the loser.
Then we could hang the winner.

I'd buy the DVD of that.
Even if it had Richard Hammond's face on the cover. 😀

which was exactly my complaint 🙂 the re-vamp has been hugely successful, it sells all over the world so I can understand BBC being reluctant to mess with it, but they really are repeating ideas (already given examples) and I think they need to do something to keep it fresh and maintain interest, or risk a long drawn out death. A new presenter to change the dynamic, maybe a female, a new regular slot alongside Star in a..., or play with that format a bit (so that they can still keep getting slebs in if thats what they think they need, maybe each week each star has a different challenge).

OK, it's not perfect but I do still find it entertaining; the cinematography is excellent, Clarkson plays(?) the buffoon very well, May is a good stiff. It's a breath of fresh air on a sunday night when we're so bombarded with reality crap. It's a quasi-car show, anyone can watch it which is why it's so popular. I wouldn't be unhappy if they replaced Hammond with someone else either, a female who doesn't take herself too seriously would be great.
I suppose what I'm saying is that the gaping majority of TV is so dire, TG qualifies as good.

I found lastnight's episode funny and entertaining.
I like the humour of Mr Clarksons.
I like the way it winds people up.
I'm watching an episode on Dave as we speak.

I thought the episode was good enough, really liked the rally Bentley, but what I really want is this season's 'big trip' special! I loved Vietnam and v much enjoyed South America so roll on The Source of the Nile!

The problem for me has always been that I love cars and want to watch any car-related programmes on TV.

Unfortunately with Top Gear it means I have to watch a cross between a car programme and Last of the Summer Wine type humour.
Some of you obviously like that and are lucky to have your sense of humour catered for with some cars mixed in too.

For the rest if us it will always be a painfully cringing experience.
