MOTORING: Top Gear
On: BBC 2 London (2)
Date: Sunday 27th January 2013 (starting in 1 hour and 50 minutes)
Time: 20:00 to 21:00 (1 hour long)

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May return for a brand new series. In this first episode, Jeremy attempts to build a car that's even smaller than the famous Peel P50. He then tests it out on the streets of London before putting his concept to the ultimate test of credibility in the fearsome Dragons' Den. Meanwhile, James is testing the latest Bentley Continental GT Speed by taking it on a rally stage. Plus Richard is at the test track to unleash the sensational new Pagani Huayra hypercar before handing it over to The Stig for the lap of its lifetime. Homeland star Damian Lewis is the star in the Reasonably Priced Car.

Do what? A clever bird who's exceedingly easy on the eye? What's not to like?
Unless he feels threatened by clever girls, of course...
Helen Czerski, Research physicist

[IMG] [/IMG]

Helen Czerski
Job Title: Post-doctoral researcher in shock and impact physics
Organisation: Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge
Years in current position: 4 years while I finished my PhD and 9 months since then
Qualifications: MSci in Natural Sciences (Physics) from Churchill College, Cambridge University. PhD in shock and explosives physics, University of Cambridge
I'm a physicist specialising in what materials do when they are hit at very high speeds (up to about 2000 mph). Most of my work is experimental, but I need to understand the mathematical theories behind what I'm doing so that I can design good experiments to find out what is going on.
My job is never boring because I'm always solving puzzles .... how I can build an experiment to measure a specific quantity, how I can construct a theory that might describe what is going on, and lots more besides. The best bit is definitely the variety and the fact that I don't have to spend entire days stuck at my desk. When I get restless, I get up and go and do a practical experiment.
I've always liked playing with numbers in my head and I like the mathematical bits of physics. Maths is such a powerful way of describing how things are - you can really look at an equation and visualise very clearly what it means in physical terms in your head. It communicates what is happening very quickly and very elegantly. The parallels between the maths in different areas of research are fascinating as well - you can really see the similarities between things that might seem entirely different on the surface.
The other fun thing about my job is communicating with other people, sometimes to discuss a theory with them and to bounce ideas off them, and sometimes to present my results to a wider scientific audience. It's really exciting when two people put their heads together and produce a combination of ideas - it's like playing tennis. One person has an idea and the other bounces it back with something added to it. It's a really nice way of solving problems.
I see the world as full of physics toys that I can play with if I know a little bit about them to start with. To do my job you need a lot of curiosity and a mind that is open to new ideas... but that's easy because there are so many good things to ask questions about!

Yeah, I can see how some blokes might have a problem with someone like that...

Not any more, you can't. The RS6 Avante has the V8 engine from the Bentley, they've dropped the Lamborghini engined version.

The W12 engine that goes in the Phaeton is non turbo.
So, there isn't a WRX version but there is This version coming to race tracks this year

The only thing they modified on the Bentley was the seats? Erm what about the dirty great big sump guard that was (probably zipp tied) on underneath.

It was filmed at Sweet Lamb, mid Wales.

Well shot and edited as per usual, James May very good, and who was that so caled star, about as funny as picolax, i just sat in the bog for 5 minutes just like picolax,he was that boring.

Dragons Den spoof was rather good, with Debs,oh and a rather nice advert for bentley using tv licence fees to pay for it.

Project, I think you'll find that 'so-called star' is, actually, quite a big star, it's not his fault you're not paying attention to the wider world of TV. 🙄

The series stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a Central Intelligence Agency officer, and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, a U.S. Marine. Mathison has come to believe that Brody, who was held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war, was "turned" by the enemy and now threatens the United States.
The series is broadcast in the U.S. on the cable channel Showtime, and is produced by Fox 21. It premiered on October 2, 2011.[3] The first episode was made available online, more than two weeks before broadcast, with viewers having to complete tasks to gain access.[4][5] The series has been renewed for a third season of 12 episodes,[6] which will premiere on September 29, 2013.[7]
The series has received critical acclaim, as well as several industry awards, including winning the 2012 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, the 2012 and 2013 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Damian Lewis and Claire Danes respectively.

How much CF, do you know,

Basicly bentley lend TG a car, TG then film edit and drive it round and round a trail, film is then put into a programe sold round the world, and people with to much money actualy buy the car featured.

Its called product placement and advertising on the cheap.

So? Did I pass any sort of comment about that? I was talking about Damian Lewis.
I'm pretty sure that Bentley was given quite a thrashing, and there were a lot of people around the course to cry 'foul'.
Bentley have, in the past, refused to allow TG to have one of their cars to play with.

Tried it again -
Usually end up watching the first of the series, just to see if it's any better.

Sorry, but that was a new low.
It so predictable and tedious it was beyond a parody of itself.

Some pretty pictures of the Pagani without any real insight into the engineering or development behind it.

A Volkswagen advert.

Damian Lewis was entertaining, I'll give you that.

The Clarkson P45 thing was excerable - do people really find this amusing? I've had funnier hemorrhoids.
Seriously, that was supposed to be acceptable television?
The Peel thing they did, what, six years ago, was quite amusing - well produced, original, self depreciating.
This was just tedious filler pitched at children and idiots.

And what do they have for the rest of the series?
Wow, less original versions of all the stuff they've done before.
Football with cars? Jesus, give me strength - it was vaguely amusing for five minutes 10 years ago.

Please make this the last series, it's just an embarrasment now.

No, I watched it hoping it might be entertaining.

I used to like it, when it wasn't sad, tired and preditable crap dressed up as something new:
The cheap car challenges used to be fun, the road trips were entertaining and the banter between the three presenters felt fresh and spontaneous.
Now they sound like they'd genuinely like to kill each other.
It's run it's course, let it go.

It's just an opinion, no more valid or invalid than everyone elses. 🙂

Why do people get so defensive about this rubbish?

Everything on TV has a finite lifespan.
Let's see if they can can come up with something better.
They couldn't come up with anything worse.

Perhaps it's not as polished and preened as some would like and for sure it lacks on the engineering and technical articles that could be shown regarding the engineering marvels that are on the program week in week out but for gawds sake you bunch of moaning cretins it's a frivolous car show with tyre smoke and boys playing with fast cars that is exported around the world to great acclaim and the BBC licenses the show for a fortune, it raises the profile of the BBC and if it were to feature such delights as the intricacies of the Bentleys 15 degree staggered cylinders rather than a quick blast round a rally stage then i imagine people would turn over rather quick. It's not a show to be taken seriously.

They need a younger presenter. Maybe a BIKE segment presenter as well.

Come on. Mix it up. More presenters. Younger.

Utterly baffled by the "Bentley advertising" comment 😐

I mean, how do you suggest they get around that in a way that still allows the car some screen time? I presume you'll also be writing strongly worded letters to the BBC about Pagani's blatant consumerist brainwashing segment, and wetting the pen against your tongue in anticipation of the upcoming BBC-license-funded ad campaigns for the new Corvette, Beemer M4, Merc SLS Black, etc..

A small thing but at the weekend I rewatched an old 5th gear with VBH going head to head in a Impreza STI on a rally-cross course against a 17yr old up and coming Rally driver. Love how she got it wrong on tore the rear bumper clean off but carried on without batting an eyelid. Apart from the instudio mincing it just feels better....with less production ££ too.

Would the BBC be better of without the huge amount of money that it earns from making Top Gear ?

No.

Would less money be available to make other stuff that people who don't like Top Gear might like.

Yes.

It's not difficult to understand really. Top Gear makes the BBC shed loads of money, rather than "costing license payers" anything.

They can use that money to make other types of programmes that Top Gear haters might like.

Didn't the BBC get in trouble for replacing presenters with younger versions? ...

There are a lot of people who seem intent on deliberately finding things they don't like or that 'offends' them ... rather than just ignoring them, they whang on about it on social networking sites and forums's 😀

I always remember Damian Lewis for Band of Brothers, never have been a fan of Homeland.

When Clarkson dropped the lid on the P45 it just reminded me of Buzz Lightyear 🙂 But it was drawn-out a bit.

I'd have liked to have heard Bentley's initial reaction when they asked if it was okay if we take your car rallying 🙂

Small air in the Bentley must have been fun.

But possibly not the landing when 2.3tonnes succumbs to gravity! Made an interesting noise, more like a V6 than a V12 (I know its effectively two V6s side by side), didn't it shift!
Still don'tlike the look on the Continentals, think they're ugly. But its not likely to be a problem Im likely to be dealing with anytime soon. 😆

I wish all car adverts were as uniquely different as rallying a Bentley, rather than just piddling about a town or whatever with some kid in the back grinning like a cheshire cat ... car ad's are 2nd only to bank ad's on the "totally utterly coma-inducingly boring" scale

Bentley were probably happy to do it. They were on the back foot after the Romania thing were Bentley refused to let them have a test car. TG replaced it with an old Yugo and just said it was the new Mulsanne.

It might have made them look a bit petty.

If you want entertainment watch TG. If you want to watch a a automotive programme; 5th gear.

I want to be entertained. 5th Gear can't manage that, it's too po-faced.

Sorry, nodded off there, what was that?

The Bentley part may be seen as "product placement" but every week they have cars on it, some are great, some are absolute tripe, and they tell you if they are.

Surely every bike test/product test in a magazine is product placement? or do the staff at all these magazines buy the bike with their hard earned cash then write an unbiased opinion? I'm not sure that's true.

Top Gear is a telly programme, you don't have to watch it. If you're watching it so you can come on here and moan about it then it says something about your sad little life that you have that much time to waste.
