1) The Thing (John carpenter version). It's simply magnificent, tension, gore, effects, premise, carpenter nailed it.

The Thing. Completely peerless horror film. It cannot and will not be bettered. Probably my favourite film of any genre.

Alien.

Flying monkeys and that witch.
2) Charlie and the chocolate factory.
The original, acid trip gone wrong and singing dwarfs with jaundice.
3) the exorcist.
I've never dared, but I've heard it's scary.

Special mention, Dr Who and the Darleks.

You have to go to your childhood for this I reckon.

1) Texas Chainsaw Massacre / Dawn of the Dead / Exorcist (no way I can pick a winner)

2) Martyrs (french extremism has a few great ones , but that sticks as a truly shocking example - Irreversible could go here to for the same reasons but is a sickening drama rather than Horror)

3) Hereditary - has to have a mention, it's probably not the best example for many but certainly pushed horror in a new direction for me. (It follows, Under the Shadow and Get Out are there too - sorry Drac)

This is so hard as I would like to mention Bad Taste and Brain-dead etc too.

Honourable mention to the Descent for being so utterly terrifying on a super low budget.

Can't really do it to be honest.

Oh and Evil Dead for its wake up call in the nasties era.

Don't really enjoy horror films but the one that sticks in my mind and genuinely frightened me when I was a lot younger was Psycho . When that was made you had to rely on more than just gory special effects to scare people and Hitchcock did it superbly well . Watched the ring and I thought that it was unimaginative and really awful , but like I say I don't really enjoy the genre .

I hope your talking of the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead.

Very hard to pick a top 3. Horror is a broad genre so many different style of films. Love sci-fi too so a combination of both is the best.

- alien - scared the bejeezus out of me as a 10 year old. I know, I was too young. Still love it.

- jaws - horror? Maybe not, but love the way Spielberg made ‘horror’ for the masses.

- shining - just a good film and great characters.

Honourable mentions.

- the descent - creepy, and the ending is just grim - really hits hard. Recommend.

- the omen - great

- the exorcist - superb.

- Texas chainsaw massacre - mental.

- the grudge - you know.

- Blair witch - watched when lived alone in house at night. Nice.

Blair Witch, great hype, shit film imo. The movie that makes any **** with a video camera think they can make a found footage movie. I know Cannibal Holocaust was probably one of the first found footage films but Blair Witch has a lot to answer for.

The Blurred Witch Project was terrible, IMHO.

Bone Tomahawk. Is on film4 later tonight & is worth a watch.

Had a house share in the late 90's and we had early surround sound speakers. They all went out one night and I watched Candyman...I really wanted them to come home.

American werewolf in London - watched this when I was about 10 and still think about it when I’m going through certain underground stations at night and on my own

Blair Witch - I saw this just after getting the US for a work trip and has not seen any of the hype etc. Scared the crap out of me, was sat at the end in the cinema with my heart in my mouth. Everyone else I know saw it in the UK after the reviews/hype train and almost universally thought it was shite

Grotesque was the last film to chill me, I forced myself to finish it but haven’t really watched any gore since as it just made me question why I watched it, and what I got out of films like it (they’ve not been missed).

Eden Lake is one of the few horror films I don't rewatch.
Along with Kill List there's just something a bit gratuitous about it.

They both genuinely scared me, but not in a good way.

Descent is an odd one.
It reminds me of Aliens - potentially great film but I there's something about the dynamic between the main characters that puts me off.
In Aliens, it's the behaviour of the Marines that doesn't ring true. In both cases it just ruins a potentially brilliant film.

Is The Vanishing a horror film? If so, it would probably be in my top five....

So many good ones on the list but not Blair Withch Project that truly is a shit film.

I like The Blair Witch Project the more I watch it.

Heather is annoying, but that sort of adds to the atmosphere.

I think it would have had a much better reception without all the hype.

If you compare it to all the 'me too' found footage films that came in it's wake, then you can see how well done and how influential it actually is.

Had to watch Hereditary to come back up after watching that.

Bone Tomahawk is best served as a Western, and then then let genre twist commence.

Well the above scared the hell out of me when I first watched them ... actually more like excited because I was watching them on VHS with mates. 😅

Nowadays there are NO More horror films coz they all bored the hell out of me with boring storyline, even with their special effects they are just lousy. 🙄

As for The Blair Witch Project that is an absolute shite film on mega level ... gave me headache just by watching it. Never again I would watch movie in such format. Absolutely shite.

Good film but not enough of the fighting ... rather disappointed with that tbh. Should have a few more clips of using the Henry repeater or cowboy got proper tomahawked ... Love watching the bloke got split apart. 😅 They should slow down the clip a bit so I can see the proper actions. Was actually trying to figure out how they do the special effect on the bloke. Very good effect. 👍

P/s: the Troglodytes fought well ... but not match for Henry repeater.

CaptJon is thinking in the right direction. 28 days later and Event Horizon are right up there for me. I did a model making course at college just after it was released and got to meet the special effects team from EH and play with some of the props. Great fun.

I’d also add the Shining, for being so many great things at once. Not to mention being truly terrifying without being gory.

Dishonourable mention for a daft film from the 80s about some sort of gremlin that stabbed people with a ring and turned them into a jungle plant, or summink. Might have even been that little fella Gervais is mates with. Probably awful, but as a kid in the 80s it gave me nightmares for years.

Also a bonkers alien movie with Jack Palance (IIRC) and an alien played by the same fella who also played The Predator. He had these organic ninja stars that he would chuck at you in the Forrest. Creepy AF.
