So... 6 days into tooth pain. 5 days ago Dentist says no infection, drills two teeth out and replaces fillings. See how it goes...

No improvement and no appointment until Wednesday. Bone crushingly painful. Genuinely thinking about removing the two painful teeth myself.  Home from work now so drinking gin from the bottle. When at work popping cocodamol and having to take breaks from meetings when it flares up.

What are your top tips ?

Drunk is the best solution in my opinion. Next appointment is tomorrow at 3.30pm so less than 24 hours to go. Think I'll opt for removal!

Post your tips for pain control here...

Oil of cloves is amazing. I used it when I had tooth pain so bad that I thought I would pass out. Any decent pharmacy will have it.

Good luck.

as above clove oil, tweezers and small ball of tissue, dunk in the oil and apply to the area (tastes foul btw but you get used to it) repeat until numb.

Been there, you have my sympathy. If it is as bad as you say then you will need to break the pain cycle. Over the counter stuff won't touch it. Ring 101 and get to see an emergency dentist, they will give you a jab to kill the pain and then you'll be able to control it.

I suspect you do have an infection, mine was utterly appalling and I ended up seeing a maxillofacial consultant as it had got so bad. I'm talking a couple of weeks of unbearable pain. So don't delay, get it sorted ASAP

Dihydrocodine is your friend.  Can be bought over the counter in low doses - paramol IIRC.  But you really want the strong stuff - dentist or doctor for that.  You won't be in pain but you will be useless for anything else and you won't crap for a week

You can also take paracetamol and ibuprofen together - they work pretty well

I was going to suggest cocodomol - it worked wonders for me when I was having ‘punch the wall to give me another pain to focus on’ levels of pain with my wisdom teeth.

I can’t imagine what pain you must be having!

There're much stronger pain killers available over the counter if you go into a pharmacy and explain.

I was taking 800-1000mg of Ibuprofen every 4 hours for a week or so.  at the 3 hour point they started to wear off and by 4, I was practically shaking.  Paracetamol and co-codamol didn't do much.  My kidneys were sore for a week or so after taking so much.

Get it seen to as soon as you can. My Brother in Law is in Hospital after having an op to get rid of the Puss after he had a tooth out. He struggled on with pain Medication and anti-biotics until his face swelled and went to A&E.

Hope that doesn't worry you unduly.

Are your teeth definitely the source of the pain? I had excruciating tooth ache a few years ago.

Dentist checked and couldn't find anything wrong. He suggested going to the GP, it was a sinus infection & a course of antibiotics cleared it up.

Might be worth a second opinion before you yank them out.

worst pain I ever have had was sinusitis that effected  the roots of my front teeth.  Sinus pain and tooth pain at the same time.

I had a root canal done one morning, flew out to Germany in the afternoon for a conference. Next day woke to excruciating pain and my face started to swell. Started taking over the counter stuff, but it only alleviated it for an hour or two. The following morning, my eye was starting to close so went to see the doctor at the conference centre - agreed that I needed to see a dentist urgently - saw one about an hour later. They attempted to drill the tooth, relieve the pressure but it still didn’t hit the spot but they did give me some anti-biotics. The next day my colleague was driving back to the UK, so I grabbed a lift and managed to get an emergency appointment with my dentist for late that day. He drilled right into the root and the relief was palpable, he described it as a ‘gusher’ 🤢.

1) don't mix alcohol and painkillers. That way lies liver damage or stomach ulcers depending on the drugs.

2) after finally getting my rotten tooth removed last month after 2.5 years waiting on the list I can thoroughly recommend Oragel extra strength (the 20% stuff). That was enough to reduce pain bad enough to give visual hallucinations down to just wanting to curl up and sleep/die). Be careful applying it as if you smear it arround you'll be dribbling out the side of your mouth.

I found the best solution is a combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen. 4hr gaps between doses but alternate them so you take paracetamol then in 2hrs ibuprofen, 2hrs paracetamol, rinse and repeat.

Obviously leave this until tomorrow when the gin wears off, you'll need the paracetamol then anyway.

I had a double root canal back in August sometime, two of my front teeth which sit under a bridge. Never had root canal before or any real tooth pain tbh.

Dentist said just take some ibuprofen once in a while for about ten days to keep it at bay. Which I thought, well it won't hurt that much if he thinks ibuprofen will keep it at bay. How wrong I was. About four hours later I couldn't work, couldn't concentrate on anything. I was actually quite impressed with how much pain it was causing, never experienced anything like it! All I could get from Tescos over the road at the time was Nurofen. I'd taken the recommended 24hr dose within the next six hours. Beer and whisky helped the first night. The next day I tried paracetamol & Ibuprofen, that worked much better. Gradually started to better after a week or so and could wean myself off the stuff. Enjoy!

Failed root canal here 10 years ago, dentist overfilled cavity so had a tiny trail under tooth.  Swelling spread down neck, never felt pain like it.  Dentist took a few sessions to fix, didn't charge anything either, he knew it was his mistake.

I've had two teeth that eventually ended up in root canals that tien failed. After that any similar issues I'll just be asking for an extraction, no more root canals for me!

Hope you recover quickly OP

Gargle hot salty water. The heat helps and so does the salt. Sounds too simple, but should bring some relief.
