Prompted by the tool chest thread. I'm sorted for drawers, shelving, cabinets etc. What I don't have is a solution for small hand tools and bike specific stuff. I've currently got loads of items on some overloaded magnet strips but I fancy going full pegboard.
Who makes the best, most robust board? Where you do get all the clippy bits and attachments from? Are they generic or do you have to commit to a certain style?
I've been putting off getting one because I wasn't sure about them and I've ended up with a bench covered in junk.
Show me your pictures!
I have a sheet of ply on the garage wall covered in screws.
I use magnetic strips like this, it gives more flexibility to move stuff around and add or remove stuff depending on what I have on at the time. https://www.screwfix.com/p/smith-locke-magnetic-tool-holder-black-50-x-380mm/6951j
What's the point of a tool wall if you're only using them ad-hoc? Surely it just leaves them where they get dusty/dirty/oxidised when they wouldn't if stored in a proper chest. Genuine question.

Much easier to see and put your hand straight on the exact tool you want, without having to open, rummage through then close a drawer (or several 'til you find the right one). Finding the exact spanner you need for example if they are arranged in ascending size on a wall, rather than fighting through a pile in a drawer. Easier to see if any are missing. If tools are rusting on your wall, you've got an issue with ventilation and they'll probably rust in a tool box too. I don't thinks it's either/or I use tool boxes and tool walls, but if you've got the wall space there is definitely space for the latter.
I think you're doing it wrong 😂 Might as well just have bin bags full of tools if you're not going to at least label the drawers and put the right things back in the right places in each one 🤣without having to open, rummage through then close a drawer (or several ’til you find the right one)
I started off with a sheet of ply and everything hanging off screws. Then I took it down and replaced it in a more orderly sort of fashion, with only the things I use reasonably frequently (which is still quite a lot I suppose). Everything else is in drawers to try and keep the dust off.

I'm guessing you don't have supposedly grown up kids who regularly 'borrow' your tools 😁
I've got some sheets off ply with many screws and nails. This is an older picture - some stuff has been moved to accommodate more hammers.

that's why the tool chests have locks on them!! 😂I’m guessing you don’t have supposedly grown up kids who regularly ‘borrow’ your tools
I've got a mish mash of peg boards and French cleat boards made out of ply.

bin bags full of tools
Have you been in my cellar?
It's a nightmare.
One day I'll sort it all out properly (he says, every time, after spending half an hour looking for a screwdriver)
I use a few panels of Bott Perfo
https://www.bottltd.co.uk/workplace-systems/product-ranges/perfo
It's the go-to in the UK for industrial set-ups, very robust and with vast range of hooks and attachments available, it's also been around forever so you'll probably always be able to get bits for it.
It won't be anywhere near as cheap as the 'board and screws' method, but it's good stuff.
Chipboard with a mixture of magnectic strips, hooks and dowel pegs. Spent so many years disorganised or having to dig through tool boxes, find tools strewn about the place, this has been so nice to use. When a tool has it's own place, you always put it back (or I do)!

At least when you have a tool wall you can see what the little bastards have taken and try to get it back. If its tucked away, you only find out when you need it!
When my son was on the way I made a tool wall out of some floor board offcuts and lumps of wood from the pile. Painted white with leftover paint, and 4 years on its speed up me up significantly.
All most all bike tools live on it. Exceptions are things like star nut tools and bearing presses that come out very occasionally. Previously I was taking about in 2 tool boxes for the correct thing and always taking ages to find most things.
Total cost £0. Used most weeks.
Not the best photo but I just built a bench and used MDF for the bench top and the back. Just throwing some screws in to hang tools off.
Next job is to build some drawers for below the worktop and add some shelving lower down.

My winter project is to sort the garage. New workbenches with a combination of chests for infrequent tools with hopefully some foam inserts, along with a tool wall for regular use tools.
I had a tool wall before, but went a bit mad and had as much as possible on the wall, I found it became a dust trap. Especially behind power tools.
I sort of miss my old tool wall, which was in my old garage
I now have way too many tools and not enough wall space to place them on. I would definitely consider a peg board and/or french cleats if I did though
I do have a lot of magnetic rails with various useful bits attached, but more than 99% of tools are in a tool chest or filing cabinet
mine is MDF type with lots of holes at about 3cm intervals, i then use bent peg jobbies for the tools.

Like that i guess.
That piece of chipboard just happened to be on my garage wall when I moved in. So when I re-orged it, thought I might as well use it. Small dowels and little hooks in addition to the mag strips. Only thing I got slightly wrong was the one for the pliers, bit crowded.. might move them at some point, but it's great to have everything handy.
these hooks are useful, also used them to hold the mag strips on for extra, erm hookage.
No tool wall for me - wall space for storage is at a premium. I have a organiser tool box just for bike stuff. It works fine, and I can just grab it a go for the away trips.
Piece of ply I had left over painted. It's also spaced off the wall with bits of copper
Holders are panel pins.
Main issue is that if I want to add anything to the empty space I need to take all the tools off to bang a new pin in...

That's a lot of pedal spanners.
😀 My pedal spanner is on a different section of wall. Cone spanners are in the tool box, where they will stay!
Cone spanners.
I have/had a lot of Shimano hubs in use. Sadly looks like I'm slowly being forced into cartridge bearing hubs.
Cone spanners also in the drawer, along with stuff that doesn't get used often - chainwhips, cassette tools, etc. Both socket sets as I tend to use the ace WERA one on the wall.
To the left of that pic are around 100 drawers across 4 storage units. Lots of stuff all properly labelled up. I don't know if it saves me much time, but it gives me a lot of satisfaction just to look at it!
No space for a tool wall, the wall has bikes hanging on it...
That said, all the tools are "to hand" quite easily -
Small fishing tackle type box has screwdriver, level, drillbits, pliers, knife (etc) - covers 75% of basic DIY duties
Another small-ish chest with the drill driver(s) - mops up another 20%
Plumbing clobber lives in another box
Soldering and electrical in another
...you get the idea
