Well, my darling daughter seems to have achieved the same feat I managed about 30 years ago, and destroyed the stylus on her father's turntable. The fact that my parents are currently over from the UK to see the aftermath is quite an amusing coincidence / belated karma.

So... is there anything that can be done to protect a turntable from a toddler? I mean unlike the amp etc, it can't be put inside a cupboard and still used, and having found her with a permanent marker that was on the top of a 6 ft 😯 bookshelf means that she is rather good at climbing if she wants something, so height alone probably won't stop her.

I guess the other option is waiting until she's a little older before treating myself to a replacement of the rest of the turntable also. While probably a little while off, she's generally pretty good at not touching things she's not supposed to after a couple of tellings off. At what age do they actually stop touching things they're not supposed to, or at least recognising that they shouldn't damage things?

Social services may well take a dim view on locking a toddler in a cupboard.

I'm living without mine until he's old enough not to be throwing things around the house. The only alternative might be a cheaper MM cartridge.

Is he with relatives or in care?

I like kids but ... I couldn't eat a whole one.

Have a bit more faith in her.

She has done it once, now you've explained that she shouldn't have I bet she doesn't do it again.

Threaten no pudding to be doubly sure

No it's not locked they can come out when I say that I've finished playing records

thankfully mine never touched mine[ or my guitar] just like they never put their hand in the fire.

I blame the parents, though in this case poor genetics cannot be ruled out:wink:

Probably best to just lock it away - deck not child

now you've explained that she shouldn't have

No, sadly I haven't. It happened while I was out and my wife caught her fiddling with it but didn't recognise that any damage had been done. Consequently she didn't really do any disciplining, and there's no point me trying to explain to the little one 6 hours later why what she did was bad. So sadly:

I bet she does[s]n't[/s] do it again.

what she did was bad.

Well it's not BAD ... Until you EXPLAIN you'd rather her not touch it... otherwise you've set no boundary.

That's all they are doing right ? ... pushing the boundaries

Use it as an example for other things in general ... give her a chance and if she does it again come down on her like a tonne of bricks.

She wont do it a third time.

But remember to reward as well ... if she hasn't gone near it for a week/10 days remind her of the talk you had and how pleased you are with her and how you're gonna treat her to a massive pudding 😀

The only reason she'll have been fiddling with it will have been her trying to put some music on. She seems to love dancing more than a bunch of girls after 10 vodkas on a hen do in Blackpool! She's particularly into Metallica 😆

Cheap cabinets on gumtree are being looked at...

My mum did mine once years ago. Went to play a record and needle was 90 degrees to where it should have been. Must have done it when cleading the room. She denied it of course grrrrrr.

Zokes, have you not got the little plastic cap that goes over the end of the cartridge.

Have you glued your speaker grilles into place?

Shave off your beard and put the turntable back in the loft where it belongs.... 😉

Porlus and slowoldman: no, and no. Though once I have a new stylus (presumably with case) it will be yes and maybe. Don't really want to glue them as they definitely sound better without, and I have no intention of showing my little one that they do come off. Presumably she's seen me put on records and thought she could do it herself!

Closer inspection shows she's also stuffed the laser on the CD player. Not so bad as I just stream all my CDs as FLAC off my server these days. Not as easy with the 500 LPs. Very expensive to fix the CD player though as its a Naim 🙁

As above - get her a turntable of her own.

I bought my nephew a second hand DJ style turntable and a job lot of about 40 LPs of ebay - the LPs seemed to come from someone who'd had one of those old music-club subscriptions so lots of compilations and best-offs from the 50s / 60s / 70s / 80s - loads of choice of things to play and the deck itself could be 'played with' as well as listened to.

I can't be held responsible if mini Zokes develops a taste for poodle rock though.

Hmmm. Possibly a little young for her own yet, not quite got the coordination to handle LPs, but it's a great idea for when she's a little older. I'm prepared to risk the side effect it may have on her taste in music...
