I'll be traveling though jungle etc in March and want a sub £100 watch that's tough, waterproof and doesn't mind a splash of deet without melting.

I initially thought of a Casio g shock but they all look like a chewed lump of Lego. I like a big watch but they are HUGE.
Anyway. I'm still interested in a 5600 but that will still get a hammering with the mozzy spray.

Any suggestions for digital watch and no nato straps.

Happy to spend more money but don't want the risk of getting my arm chopped off for the watch.

A GPS watch, track where you are/ have been? Not sure on battery life though.

Failing that, how about a Rolex Explorer! Surely built for exploring and you will be able to sell it for more than you paid when you get back, apparently.

I treated myself to an Invicta pro divery one off of t'Amazon, and I'll not buy another watch off the web - it's massive, it's the size of a bus steering wheel. If you get stranded and need something to either shelter under or paddle down a river, it's just the job.

You've already identified the reason why that's not going to meet the requirements - I think the longest any will last (when using GPS) isn't much more than 24 hours. Unless he has a convenient way of recharging.

<disappointed> only came on this thread to suggest Casio </disappointed>

Actually I have a metal cased and strapped Casio which would resist the Deet and isn't huge - an old model which I'm sure they no longer do, but I'm also sure they'll do something similar nowadays, so don't dismiss them until you've actually tried one.

A cheap Seiko 5 from Amazon?
Or a small G-Shock, some are huge others much less so.

This. Not overlarge, automatic, so no battery issues, robust build in stainless, and a whole bunch of styles; watch not to like? 😉
Or a Citizen.
Fractionally over budget at £126, but worth every penny, I think:

Indeed. I've got one that came out of a STW PSA a while back. I've got the wrists of a small girl* and it's fine.

(* - disposing of the rest of the body was more difficult.)

I have this

http://www.watchshop.com/mens-casio-g-shock-waveceptor-alarm-chronograph-radio-controlled-watch-awg-m100a-1aer-p99945636.html

Yes it's a g shock, but it's not a large one. Has been very resilient to all I've thrown at it, which includes being bumped, scraped and dunked.

Best features for me are that its solar powered, and even through the winter nights , it's never gone below medium charge, even then a few hours with it on the window sill facing the daylight is enough to bring it back to full.

Also has the radio-set time, so it auto adjusts the time periodically, and it's easy to change to different countries.

Lastly, has a little light which comes on automatically when you twist your wrist to wards your face. Which for me working shifts out on the street at dark o clock is very helpful.

Sorry. What jungle will you be hiking through and why?

As far as I know (syfy channel films) everything will either eat you or lay eggs in you, and a fish
Swims up your 'YaYa'.

I'd just get a G10 with a NATO strap. Fresh battery and you're good to go. Deet won't melt these.

A good choice the Casio 5600, the one I have has a braclet rather than a rubber or fabric strap.
Have you thought about a Burtucci?, they are a classic field watch and have a different case design that has cast in bars for the strap rather than spring bars or even pressed in ones, they do use a one piece band rather like a NATO, but come in various colours.

Thanks all.

Key points are no nato straps and I want a digital.
Probably just go for a g 5600 and be done with it. I've found them for £60 so it's pretty much throw away if the deet eats it during the trip.

My Ecodrive B612,has been on a 2 sec tick for weeks. No decent sunlight, no worky. And it's been on a windowsill so not in-a-drawer deprived. Disappointed.

Casio 5610, solar powered and auto time signal, always spot on time and no battery changes, the only problems I've had is the straps give out after a couple of years but they are replaceable, the body never dies!

My g shock I bought in afghan from the American px for 38 dollars is still going strong after 6 years. And when I say six years I mean 6 years of pure abuse, daily coatings of hydraulic fluid, a 10 hour full submersion in f34 jet fuel (how my hands coped with that I don't know, dermatitis in later life will probably answer that) many MTB crashes, a week submersed in the solent on an awful sailing trip, many hits with poor hammer aiming, and a trip across a hanger floor after a poor chisel attempt, came off my wrist but everything was intact on the strap and suchlike.

I cannot praise them enough, don't look pretty but Christ they do the job incredibly well

Timex Ironman. Not too big, and seems pretty tough. You can get one for about £30.

I have just revived my G-shock DW6600 while my proper watch is in for an rather expensive repair. It's 23 years old and hasn't had a battery for the last 6 and it started up right away. Had everything spilt on it from blood to oil and antifreeze. Can't beat g-shock for reliability and ruggedness.
