Currently have a Samsung A5 which is due to change , I'm looking for a compact size with a good camera .
The Samsung s10e has now been discontinued , which was going to be the replacement for my A5 . Anyone got the Google pixel 4 ? Seems to fit the bill but reviews say poor battery let it down .

Pixel 4a - bigger battery and smaller screen than Pixel 4 so better battery life.

After using Samsung flagships for years on end I switched to a Huawei P30 for my last upgrade and couldn't be happier with the camera on it. Good battery life too. It's touch larger than the 10e at 6.1" vs 5.8" but I wouldn't say it's massive. No problems with Google apps on it too like the newer P40 (although I believe there are ways around that).

Best time to buy one! I did so a couple of weeks ago, and it's ace. Near perfect size, fast, some clever shortcuts and all round excellent so far.

I've had a Pixel 4 for a few months and the battery life is indeed rubbish but I knew that when I bought it, it did tick a lot of boxes for me though (waterproof, very good camera, latest Android plus updates for the next few years).

I got it new for a very good price, no way would I have paid full price for it!

EDIT
Oh, and lack of fingerprint scanner is annoying. The face unlock works well but doesn’t work with many apps, so you have to remember logins for banking app etc.

Pixel 4a is not released until October.
I think the pre-order goes live sometime in September.

I am holding out for that. I was planning on getting the 3a in April, but heard rumours about the 4a & have been waiting as it keeps getting pushed back.
My current phone is over 3 years old & works OK, but the camera was average at best even 3 years ago. Now it lags way behind. I also broke the screen last Christmas & replaced it, but the only ones available were fake - colours are all over the place & the touch sensitivity can be quite glitchy, so it could really do with being replaced.

If camera quality is a primary consideration, then I would hang-out if possible and get one.
If you really need a new one now - how about the 3a? Last time I looked a couple of weeks ago it was still available & had been reduced to £329 on the Google Store.

The Pixel 3a is dope. Can't imagine what the 4a does better. The 3a camera is really, really good.

I've decided to wait for a 4a (or even a 5) rather than switch to a 4 right now. I did have a 4 for a week (refurb model via insurance, which turned out not to be very refurbished....), it was lovely but the lack of fingerprint scanner quickly became a frustration as I found too many of my regular apps didn't support face unlock.
If you're desperate to get something now the 3a is definitely a nice option but I think the 4a would be worth the wait

Camera-wise there's probably not much in it, but the 4a has 128gb storage, 6Gb of RAM and the screen seems to fill the phone better without the large top & bottom bezels.
It also has a slightly larger battery I think (might be getting confused with the Pixel 4) & apparently the software/hardware is better at saving battery life - most of the reviews I have seen mention better battery life.

There is also the guarantee of 3 years of Google updates - although I guess this is similar for the 3a. When this runs from & to I am not sure about though, so I imagine the updates for the 4a would be rolling out further into the future than the 3a.

The 3a is currently reduced to £329 (from £399). The Pixel 4a is reportedly going to be £349.

Perfect time for an s10e.

Get one while you can. It will still be supported by updates for years.

I recently got a Pixel 3 XL for ~400 - while it's an older model it'll be supported for ages and (crucially for me vs the pixel a series) has an IP68 rating so I can just chuck it in a jersey/short pocket and not worry about the weather/getting it wet...
