Is the end of the cylindrical bit hollow.

It looks like a store key or something like a utilities cupboard

That’s a key from an industrial piano.

Bb probably.

You know what, I didn't actually notice.

The more predictable among you (Cougar, IHN) win the 'Mr Predictable' prize.

Brass? A key of sorts?

Yes to both, but a key to what?

The rectangular socket bit is tapered inside. If something sat in that, it wouldnt be secure.
The 'pin' side appears to have no wear points but the notch suggests it locks into something else.

Flummoxed.

a key to what?

The entirely flipant but 100% accurate answer is....to a lock.

It's an old, simple lock. My guess, purely based on the size, is it's for an agricultural type door, a barn or storehouse but it could have been fitted to pretty much anything

I reckon when you turn the key, the tapered bit lines up with something that engages it?
The annoying thing about this is that I feel like I have seen this before. It's on the tip of my toungue/brain/experience...

It's the starter handle for the previous gen BPW uplift vehicle. The long wooden bar that goes in the slot has rotted away.

rather than being a key of some sort, im guessing that from the shape of it, it stands on its end (wider/sturdier at the bottom).

and if it stands on its end then its not supposed to move/turn/spin.

and if it doesnt move/turn/spin then something slots over the end of it instead and comes to a stop at the bigger diameter bit.

cant work out why theres a notch tho. mebbes to lift the 'thing' up and turn it round for some reason?

am i close in my reasoning?

That cavity in the handle is either a measure or a place to grab it and pull it. I can’t see it being used to twist anything as there wouldn’t be much leverage.

Tapered slot on sits on top of a matching section bar
round key fits on eccentric circular wheel
as wheel is rotated key moves bar which would obviously in my head be pivoted lower down to provide linear movement to an early derailure mechanism looks heavy some prob a base model deore?

Two people have mentioned something that the object is linked to.

When do I start giving clues? (that's if I can think of any!)

Its either the controller or the reverser key from an old locomotive (cant remember which)
My grandad was an engine driver and had one of these in his work kit.

If it's for a firebox, the recess may be to put water in to keep it (relatively) cool.

Prototype for electric heated car lock defroster??
Fire up the ( Quatro ) Wood burner
Insert some red hot embers into the box thing and wang into your 17th century frozen church door lock
wait a few mins for the heat to transfer into lock and melt ice in church door , allowing entry to the place of God or a Mk1 Ford Escort looking at that key

Ok I'm going to give Nealglover the win. It is indeed a 'Loco handle' & it activates (but not starts) one of these....

https://flic.kr/p/2jUCwWW

& also one of these....
https://flic.kr/p/2jUCuTx

Plus others that my stepson (who drives for Freightliner) hasn't driven.

Well done Nealglover!

Ah too slow but yeah, it's a train reverser whotsit. One of the bits they let you play with when you do one of those "drive a train" experience things.
