On 11 November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared 18 July – Nelson Mandela's birthday – as International Nelson Mandela Day, to celebrate the legacy of South Africa's Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President.

The Mandela Day campaign message is simple: Nelson Mandela has given 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All it is asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of their time, whether it’s supporting their chosen charity or serving their local community. The message for Mandela Day is for all people to recalibrate their value systems; to take a look around them and to do good.

Happy Birthday Madiba! [img] [/img]

🙂

I can't believe how well Mandela looks for a 92 year old !

Mind you, he did spend almost thirty years not doing very much and taking things pretty easy.

So judging by how healthy he looks, I guess some people might have a point when they claim that prison offers "nourishment not punishment".

Although to be fair, as is often pointed out, he has never re-offended.

Shame he wasn't more outspoken of Mugabe, or AIDS awareness, or disowning violence. Compared to most African leaders I can see why he's liked though. Everyone needs a hero, like Ernie and Che.

You obviously don't pay much attention to what Mandela says enfht.

The crises 2 years ago :

Mandela condemns Mugabe 'failure'

10 years ago :

Mandela adds to Mugabe pressure

.

Convicted terrorist, revered and made president? who next, Jerry Adams?

Yes that's right. But it actually happened quite a few years ago U31 ........so not really "news" anymore.

😆

😆 😆

Well at least I can make you laugh ..........which is what really matters to me.

Although TBH, since you are quite clearly a sandwich short of a picnic, it is probably no great achievement.
I guess you probably spend a lot of time laughing inappropriately anyway.

That's ripe coming from a Che-loving loony spanner 😆

Remind me again why you hold a failed Marxist Revolutionary in such high esteem?

😆

I'm sure no one really thinks of Mr Mandela as a "Terrorist".

But if you are the sort of a person who would think like that - then don't give it too much thought, you will almost certainly have much more serious issues going on in your life on a daily basis . . . .

🙂

I spent 9 months in Apartheid era Cape Town as a teenager. I saw the shanty towns in the Cape Flats which millions of black South Africans called home. Granted, many are still living in abject poverty but they now have the vote, full citizenship and much more opportunity than they had twenty years ago.

Nelson Mandela's release and subsequent approach to his politics has proved a lot of people wrong - myself included.

He's a truly great man.

Apartheid (and those who supported it) was evil. Nelson Mandela's leadership of the struggle to smash apartheid is one of the greatest achievements in world history.

As PJM says above, a truly great man.
