Good call LHS. How did I forget that???
And it's my lads birthday strangely he is in favour of making it a public holiday?
Mods, can we get the BNP tag at the top removed please.
Personally I don't believe there was once a bloke called George who killed a Dragon.
Maybe I'm just cynical.
Mods, can we get the BNP tag at the top removed please
+1 ****'s
BNP tag? For real?
*shakes head*
Come on then guys and gals, let's see your patriotic pictures and links!
Well warton have you seen any dragons since huh?
wasn't 'St' George Turkish?
wasn't 'St' George Turkish?
And St Patrick was English but what difference does it make they're both dead guys that people seem to want celebrate for some reason.
iDave:
wasn't 'St' George Turkish?
They will let anyone use wikipedia these days.
Yes mod, i know your a bit left wing, i don't expect you to do the decent thing and remove the BNP tag, but lets be proud of being English without being branded racist!
One can be certain that EVERY time one makes patriotic noises, some uber aggressive far leftwing socialist thicko will rear their ugly stinking head(s), making those who are proud of their identity feel look they are behaving unacceptably.
Why is it ok for Scots, Irish and Welsh to be proud and not the English?
Why do they have representation in the form of their own assemblies and the English don't?
Why do councils make people who fly the English flag, take them down?
Why do we now feel ashamed to express pride in our country?
I have American friends who cannot believe how we are here. How we have no loyalty to british companies, have no pride, can't fly flags etc etc.
We have lost our way and it has become "cool" to be negative about our country.
I believe it's down to thenasty left wing socialist thought police, who's ideals are based on the evils of communism. Shame on them!
Happy St Georges day, just make sure you don't express your pride in your country!
WTF was that rant spongebob, no-one argued?! And where did my post go?!
The tag has long gone spongebob and after that you full of shite.
Erm.....Go Spongebob!
I think?

Yeah but they go too far the other way sometimes.

I think Jamie gets the prize for undersatement of the day 😆

happy St George's Day Englanders.
Is it a big thing in England?
I always find it strange how St Paddys day is celebrated more in Scotchland than St Andrews day.

A famous Englishman and his bike!
I wonder what he's looking at, looks like he's taking a semi.

Primarily by students who like the opportunity and thumbs up to drink large amounts.
Bloke on radio 4 this morning was saying that he was a roman soldier, born to Israelite and Palestinian parents, that was killed/matyred for being a christian.
Apparently became very popular in the victorian era for being "muscular" and generally warlike and cool, but fell out of favour in the years immediately after the first world war. He only became more prominent in the mid-90's.
And if you want Britishness...
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.
PeterPoddyBut to me, THIS is England, pure Englishness
'England' didn't exist when those artefacts were made.
'England' didn't exist when those artefacts were made.
Don't spoil his fun.
toomanybikes are you in the WI? 😆
mogrim there's no need for that! I'm now salivating all over my keyboard. Roll on dinner time.
We should, however, have a national day celebrating the achievements of a man who actually did something for Britain
**Stands up and claps!**
Indeed we should. Indeed we should...... 😀
But I'm not celebrating some bloke called George. It's merely a day to celebrate being English, and the (what should be) proud traditions, mythology and cultural heritage that goes along with that.
Never bothered with it tbh.
Good luck to those that do, have a great day...
I'm liking the English landscape pics too, I was thinking that myself, but went off on a different tack 🙂
I've just taken the little'un into school and they're all wearing red and white. Nice to see it celebrated.
And as an English image goes, this isn't a crass second world war reference
Just possibly the most beautiful aircraft ever to grace the skies. And sounds even better. Just what we can do when we put our minds to it eh?
Great minds eh LHS? 🙂
Can we have a Spitfire pic or are war planes not PC?
Or even better an audio link to a Rolls Royce Merlin engine at full chat (gives men of a certain age a little sex wee)
Edit; DOH
not interested in wars and death and fighting. nice that we are so patriotic on the subject but at what loss of life? people talk about WW2 these days as if it was a good thing. - get a grip folks.
Its not a celebration of wars, its a celebrations of great english designs, designers, and engineering, something we should all be proud of as an engineering nation.
And did those feet in ancient time

No.
I like how you use fighter planes as an example of "englishness" - are they not British??
Designed by englishmen, built in england.
Happy St George's Day to all, am one of only 2 people in a large open plan office with approx 500 people in it that seems to be embracing the celebration, I have St George cross flags on my desk and he is wearing white shirt, red tie and St George cross cufflinks, we have both just had a full English breakfast too 😀
tracknicko - get a grip. Nobodies celebrating war. We're celebrating a thing of beauty. And as Oldgit says - a Rolls Royce Merlin at full tilt makes the hairs on your neck stand up
Basil Fawlty
Sex Pistols
Tinternet
Parlimentary democracy
Lotus
Damien Hirst
@PeterPoddy - where the hell is that grub from???? That looks well worth a visit!!!!
United States of Europe, please.
Yep.. Happy St Georges Day.. I'm proud to be English every day of the year but it's nice that we can have a day when everybody thinks about it
Spitfire and Harrier are British not English and the Typhoon is a pan European development. To co-opt second world war Battle of Britain image as "English" is rather crass and is rather demeaning to all the other nationalities who fought.
If you are going to celebrate what is great about being English then can I suggest choosing something that is uniquely English? Just a thought.
Eurofighter typhoon ain't just english.

gonefishin, get a grip and stop being a dick, we're not talking about war.
Spitfire was designed by an english man for an english company
Harrier was designed by an english man for an english company
Eurofighter was designed by a bunch of english men working at a company in england 😉

I think you're seeing the obvious and missing the point, it's about the british/English spirit, design and overcoming adversity, not the killing.
Incidentally the spitfire was entirely English designed and built, by and English designer and company. But it did, obviously, fight for the UK.
Anyone actually celebrating. It'll be a day or so late but our local puts on a mini beer festival showcasing local breweries and lays on massive roasts nomnomnomslurpnomslup. also loads of tradition games and it's surprising how much kids of all ages enjoy them. Good day and just across the road.
Incidentally the spitfire was entirely English designed and built,
Apart from the ones built in Poland, as used by the BNP in their poster. 😉
.
Maybe stuff like this is why some people have a bit of a problem with English nationalism?
I think most people, including me, tend to ignore the tripe that those bunch of c***'s put out to be honest and not let it affect the pride we should so rightly have in our nation.
I think most people, including me, tend to ignore the tripe that those bunch of c***'s put out to be honest and not let it affect the pride we should so rightly have in our nation.
So you don't see any possible connection between patriotism and xenophobia/racism etc?
i wasnt saying anyone here was spouting that WW2 or any other wars were a good thing. i just find it a shame that our 'national' symbols happen to be war machines.
plenty of other major english engineering achievements to be proud of!
