whenever I buy coffee beans from Starbucks they always give me a free filter coffee which is nice.

some roasts are actually much better filtered, the local "proper" coffee shop used to treat their filter coffee as importantly as their espresso etc

Camo, they usually have two coffees on the go in a big filter machine behind the counter. So not an Americano. The coffees change too, some blends, some single origin.

i'm yet to find a starbucks employee who knows what a 'long black' is...

after i've explained it, they normally ask: "you mean an americano ?"

me: "not really, but ok, yes, if you say so - whatever"

and then they give me a massive bucket of watery filter coffee.

After spending a month in Portugal and Spain, i've started drinking espresso...that's something i never thought i'd do!

I was going to have an espresso (you're only allowed black coffee on iDiet) but the person in front of me ordered a filter coffee so on an impulse I copied them.

And yes, Starbucks.. show me a better coffee shop within 5 minutes walk of Temple Quay, Bristol and I'm there.

Awhiles, Camo - have a look behind the counter. There's almost always a big industrial double filter machine back there. Often accompanied by a sign with 'coffee of the day' on it and some information.

(TSY, i'm also off milk chocolate and only eating dark chocolate...mustard has been a bad influence on me! 🙄 btw, i got my body composition analysis report back, i don't quite understand some of it so have a few questions about it, but its v good motivation!)

Always get a drip from Starbucks. I find their espresso isn't great.

Interestingly some coffee websites reckon that filter is the best way to drink most coffee.

But I always **** it up by adding milk. 🙂

Couple of squares of G&B is all you need IMO. Having said that, I'm eating loads of flapjack etc... reading Tri mags has made me think I can eat a lot more than I have been 🙂

I've been upping the % of dark chocolate - i used to hate dark chocolate and am now up to about 75%. I only eat a few bits before I've had my fix so its a step in the right direction! 🙂

Where's better than Starbucks on the typical High St then? Although, we've had this discussion before.. Apparently I'm worthless scum because I don't spend my life scouring the backstreets for perfect coffee.

Re chocolate, G+B 70% for me - any higher and it's just not fun.

Neros does a better coffee anyway. Starbucks do nice sticky buns but their coffee always tastes too acrid and burnt for me.

I hate Nero coffee.. far too er.. acrid and burnt tasting 🙂 I had one the other day and could barely finish it.

I prefer Costa espresso macchiato to Starbucks tho.

I have recently taken to the Dark chocolate.
85 percent or higher.
Just the odd square or two.
Its a good thing.
Sometimes taken with a glass of red wine.

I like it with my espresso, but it's also an incredible experience when a piece is chewed up with three mini marshmallows, of the American variety.

Mol, try small independant cafes for better coffee. I can't drink Starbucks now, and only have coffee from costa if its an emergency and i can't get to anywhere better. I don't like starbucks blends, and prefer to support local/small cafes than 'take over the world' starbucks. My favourite is coffee beans from square mile in london, or artisan roast which is my local up here. 🙂 But i do admit i am now a coffee snob 😥 😳

I once tried some milk chocolate with added chilli, but didn't rate it.

I love a good coffee but Mr AdamW wouldn't let me have a hulking great bean-to-cup machine in the kitchen, though I'm sure he'd enjoy the coffee. And while the pods can be expensive (getting a coffeeduck to reduce that) it does mean I can try loads of different ones without having to buy loads of bags. I do have a burr grinder (Krups £40 jobbie) though for when I do want it.

The 'Aerocccino' thing does make good froth though, even with skimmed milk.

It's the other way round. Starts as hot water, then gets espresso added to it.

According to Wiki, it's espresso poured into hot water to preserve the crema, and it's a NZ/Aus thing.

Theres an independent ?, coffee shop in the Warwick Uni precinct, Curiositea.

I tried it, but the staff were so rude and disorganized, I decided I could no longer give them my business.

Again.. I could explain to Giorgio in the local Italian how to make a fine Rogan Josh, but I doubt it'd be perfect. Although I must say in MOST Starbucks I've been in (80% probably) the staff are pretty switched on and do a pretty good job of meeting your unusual requests. The exceptions are the ones in motorway services - I think they are staffed by the service station's employees who are usually of a much lower standard. Busy city centre places get the best staff.

Totally agree, it think it's become fashionable to say Starbucks is shite, I've heard people saying that McDonalds coffee is better FFS.

Personally I like Starbucks and the Egg Nog Latte I had at the weekend was very enjoyable if a bit different to anything I've ever tasted before! Plus their loyalty card scheme is quite good as you get free extra shots of expresso, flavoured syrups and wifi.

Our small, Northern, provincial town has a Starbucks, a Nero and two Costas. There're also two Coffee @ Elliots, a small local chain.

Only good Starbucks I've had in recent years was a cup of the Pike Place filter roast. But the reason for that was I was at Pike Place at 5am due to jetlag and drank the coffee watching the market get set up and talking to people on stalls. Best use of jet lag I've had so far.

Go into a Boswells and come tell me Starbucks is crap.

Interestingly, the 2009 World Barista Champion no longer serves coffee with silly names in enormous Italian-named mugs. He sells espresso or espresso with milk (in either 4oz, 6oz or 8oz cups).

IMO the Pike Place Roast filter at starbucks is pretty nice usually. I also like their americano better than any other high st chain. I only drink black coffee so don't know about other types.

It could be because I'm conditioned to it, having a starbucks in our office, or it could be that it is actually quite nice, whatever.

Recently started using a cafetiere to make my own in the office, it's not as nice, but way cheaper.

I don't think it's snobbery. Would it be snobbery if people said they preferred, say, Stella to a can of Tesco own brand lager? Probably not, it's a matter of taste. I find Starbucks generally overpriced for what it is. By the same token, I'm happy to pay more for a genuinely good cup of coffee. Admittedly, a lot of the good coffee shops in London that are starting to open are achingly cool but that doesn't stop the coffee being good.

No, it's not snobbery to prefer one thing over the other. It's snobbery to look down on people with more popular tastes though.

Re SB, I'm not under any illusions, it's nothing like the best I've had. Whittards single origin coffees brewed at home are much nicer and the best I've ever had is Jacqmotte in Brussels, but Starbucks is quite drinkable. More so than Nero, Costa and Cardiff's independents. However what Starbucks do really well is sandwiches, milky sweet concoctions (caramel macchiatos, eggnog lattes etc - they seem to be the only people who can manage not to put too much cloying sweet vanilla in their vanilla lattes) and the blended ice drinks which are lovely, hard to replicate and just not as good anywhere else.

I won't defend their prices tho!

On a lighter note.....i always accidentally ask for an "americano" in Starbucks in the US. You get a sort of blank stare followed by;

An "Americano", from the US perspective, is actually a Eurpopean quirk, not an american one!

i have had coffee from Gwilyms cart and it's far more unpretentious than any starbucks. just a table, tarpaulin, grinder and coffee machine.

Anyway for your illucidation, the 'cream' range of frappucinos don't have coffee in at all, they are for people who don't like coffee. They taste like runny ice cream, which is no bad thing.

They don't put water in the cappucinos either, so you should probably blame the farmer or the dairy if you think they're watered down. If it's too milky you ask for a smaller size with an extra shot.

I guess this stuff is pretty complicated for some folk, isn't it?
