Picked up my new chainsaw this week. Had a little play chopping up an existing felled tree.

Split a few logs, then realised the wood shed is full of fuel for this winter.

So I knocked up a little log store out some scrap timber I had lying about.

Had to buy some wriggly tin for the roof, otherwise all reclaimed materials including most of the screws 🙂

Got it finished just before dark.

Happy with the result. Looking forward to next weekends wood chopping frenzy.

The log store look cool and a nice choice of saw, hope you have gloves, pants and boots to go with the helmet?

Liking the rustic shed cladding. It might be worth having a couple of 2x4s running end to end to support the corrugated tin rather than having them front to back. If snow builds up on top it won't support the load so well.

And stack from the back, not the front. Good job though, you'll get a fair amount of fuel in that.

Surprised you used the panel saw, everything here gets cut with a chainsaw.

Tips on stacking. Do it in vertical layers. I find 2 rows thick with a nice flat and tidy front right to the roof then another in front of that. This means that when you start to use it, it stays in one place rather than collapsing. It also gives a flat front to the whole thing which is nice and tidy.

Looks great! I've always wondered- do log store like this not leave the wood damp and wet? It's pretty exposed and all you need is a bit of wind to soak the wood, no?

Common sense says put the closed ends towards the wind. keeps most of it out and that's enough.

Cokie, the air flow from a fully open front is the best way to dry the wood, the occasional wetting with rain drys off very quickly. Ideally the roof would overhang a decent amount and it have the solid side pointing in to the prevailing wind. You ust have to make the best out of the space and orientation you have available.

Instead of going to all that trouble just send me your spare logs next time 🙂

diz - I look like a model in a Husqvarna catlogue in my matching helmet, chaps and gloves 🙂

mcmoonter - yep, will be doing a little more bracing of the roof, it just got too dark and I was ready for me tea!

nbitf - Will be stacking from the back. That was just a bit of cosmetic window dressing for STW benefit 😆

timber - ahem precision cuts only here 😉

mattsccm - am aiming for maximum aesthetic when I stack it for real

cokie - the back faces the prevaining wind, there is a hedge a few yards in front and a bit of tree cover, and the front gets plenty of sun. Spent ages picking the right spot for it as per bigsurfer

brassneck - how very kind. I'll struggle on for a bit and give you a call if I get stuck 😛

Funny thing though, me and the mrs used to admire bikes, or cars, or nice houses etc as we were driving around. Now we just spot immpressive log piles!!

More action next weekend. A buddy is coming to stay and bringing 3 more chainsaws! Half a dozen trees to fell and log 😀
