Our toaster caught fire the other day. Little flames were licking out the top right next to a plastic bottle of olive oil. It could have got very "interesting".
Now it needs replaced. (It still works ok, but I've removed the fuse and told the family it's borked)
Seeing as I cannot convince the family that they need to clean the crumbs out regularly I'm after a side loading toaster where it will be obvious when a bit of yesterday's toast is trapped.
Lockdown means I cannot go window shopping so does anyone have an idea where I can get one before the missus pops into Tesco and buys another fire hazard.
And do I win the most boring post of 2020 with this one? 🙂

Isn't a side-loading toaster more likely to catch fire from crumbs, and then allow the fire to consume everything inside instead of just spitting flames out the top?

As a serial toast eater.....once every couple of months seems to suffice.
Surely people notice when large enough chunks of their toasted snack are missing ......
Has to be a long slot toaster or your home baked sourdough won't fit
Not sure about side loading, but had a fire last year, daughter shouted up to me what was I cooking, nothing I said walked into kitchen slight burning smell and dusty atmosphere, not easy to tell as no tell-tail flames. We had had toast and had time to eat it and walk away, the eject system had NOT switched off the element and so it smouldered along causing burnt dust. So bought a new one AND now turn off at socket each time.

Somehow one of my locked down ****less offspring did manage to not notice a big chunk of their toast missing. There must have been a few toastings after because the chunk was the consistency of wood.

I’m not sure what advantage a side loading toaster really conveys over operator error.
If your old toaster still works I would continue to use it - a scorch Mark is a good reminder to all!
The lesson should be to not have a toaster in a place where a fire within the toaster can easily spread to other things (for what it’s worth I’m not sure a bottle of oil next to a toaster even with two whole slices of toast ablaze would catch fire - the bottle would neeed to melt and the oil reach its flash point before the toast burned out). Not having a toaster under a unit or curtains etc is probably far more important.
Empirically what you have shown yesterday is you can have a small fire without it burning out of control.
Perhaps time to fit a heat detector in the kitchen or buy a fire blanket rather that buy a new toaster?
Make them use the oven grill for 6 months, that will learn them.
I have a dualit, cost c 200 but 20 years old and I just changed the elements for 20 quid or so. Still looks like new and keeps your toast warm after by leaving it in and down.

I am a great believer in eliminating the risk entirely rather than relying on behaviour modification, especially when it's folk who think "that'll never happen"..
We have smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
@bsims you'll be pleased to hear that's what we're doing.
BTW what I mean by side loading is a side that folds down. Or failing that a toaster that can be accessed from the bottom so that no debris remains. A slide out tray isn't enough.

11 year old Dualit here. Has not missed a beat in all that time, apart from a couple of weeks ago when the clockwork timer stopped working. It didn't count all the way to zero so continued to toast - very nearly setting the toast on fire!
Dualit website says that the timer spring does wear out over the years. Good news is that timers are easily available from spares websites and it's a really easy job to swap the timer over.

I have been known in the past to turn peoples toasters up to maximum. Customer a pain ?, cheeky ?, see access to their toaster and up it goes 😀
