You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Leaving London at 2ish today and heading to Staveley (Cumbria)so hitting Birmingham at about 4ish (traffic pending) worth going on the Toll ?
...and I'm getting to drive [s]my[/s]wife's new car... 😉
thanks in advance
Yes x100
rarely worth it imho
saves 20 mins costs >5 quid + the extra 10ers worth of fuel youll spend at 100mph+
Always worth it in IMHO!
I usually do. It's usually clearer than the m6 And it's only a few quid
You have to ask? Always take the toll. Especially on a Friday afternoon!
And ignore what those fussy busybody's in the police tell you! It IS a racetrack!
120+ 😀
Yes, use it. I'm a Brummy and know that area of the motorway network all too well. For the cost of the toll it's an absolute no brainer, the toll road is generally very quiet and flowing, not things you'd associate with the M6 on a Friday normally.
Yes. You'll need every opportunity to make up time after the never ending contraflow north of Northhampton to the M6.
Always, its like driving in France for 20 minutes (apart from being on the other side) so treat it as a 20 minute touring break.
Get past jct4 nice and early too as they are shutting it the whole weekend to strengthen the bridge. Chaos will no doubt ensue*
*we are trying to find away to route a ride via the empty motorway though
Yes!
Any time after Noon on a Friday the M6 is hell from start to past Blackpool. It'll be even worse today as its raining and it's half term break up
I really don't envy you one bit. I'd even think about M1/A1/A66
Birmingham at 4pm? On a Friday? (With my reputation?)
Not a hope in hell I'd be going anywhere near the not-toll section, I'd rather eat my own spleen.
Always, i use it all the time for business, time is money!
Whats the claimed maximum speed of the new car? Time to find out if that's accurate. Keep us posted 😀
You'll be finding out the minimum speed from before Stoke, until you get past Preston
Used to commute back to Kendal from London every Friday from 1200hrs and it'd be approx 5hrs via toll and 7hrs not using it.
The fee is worth it for the 20min break from the random idiocy the m6 attracts at that time of day if nothing else.
Lots of road works on the non-toll section last time I passed through a couple of weeks ago. Manc to Reading this afternoon for me and definitely hitting the toll!
The toll is a rip off but the time/hassle saving is quite significant - so yes
saves 20 mins costs >5 quid + the extra 10ers worth of fuel youll spend at 100mph+
Do what everyone else does - pay the toll to avoid the delays then stop at Norton Canes services - which are always remarkably busy - to waste twice as much time as you've saved. But you've paid money so you might as well savour it!
🙂
Reaslistically though - on a journey of that length a £5 is neither here or there in terms of the whole cost and if it makes you more comfortable do it.
Actually thinking about it further, if I was you I'd definitely go M1/A1/A66 (though make sure no roadworks first)
Mmm it's limited to 155mph but according to the Internet and General sources it's good for 170mph !
3 bikes on the roof and family I'll stick at 65!
Toll road it is then heck i may go upto 75mph !
To be fair, Birmingham area has not been too bad since they widened the motorway, but they have started road works again which now ads on 30 minutes to my commute in the evening south bound. And the M54 was shut this morning so a day [s]posting on STW, riding the Lickeys[/s] working from home.
As mentioned above
Depending on what part of London you're starting from, the A1/M1/A66 option or a derivative may be better
As someone that lives in the area and frequently uses that section of motorway I would say yes.
Should be okay heading North on the normal M6 but still won't move as quick as the toll as the managed bit will no doubt be down to 40/50 through J6 - J10. Even then teh biggest issues are normally around J15 and J16 which the toll won't help you with.
Beware of the 50MPH zone currently in place from J10A through to 13, that will add a few minutes. There was a crash in that zone yesterday and it caused tailbacks to Junction 7 but also caused queues where the toll joins in too.
It'll make a difference, but the 'Wich' section (16-18/19) will slow you down, no reasons but it'll be in a crawl in places.
we are doing manc to Cov this early evening.
I'm resided to the fact the M6 will be horrible until we hit the jumpgate at the begining of the toll, drop out of warp on the M40 and we are pretty much there.

Definitely worth using the Toll south, the roadworks at Junction 9 round on to the M5 are causing mega problems.
Always went m1 a50 m6 doing London to Cumbria.
Just look at google maps as you approach - it will show you the time difference between using and not using and you can make the call yourself. Easy.
I do as Steveh says, have it on Google maps to check which ways quicker and use that!
Best sat nav I've ever used, it's saved me hours and hours of waiting time this year alone!
And ignore what those fussy busybody's in the police tell you! It IS a racetrack!120+
Given the recent speed news you weren't trying hard enough. 140+ is where the big boys [s]play[/s]make progress 8)
Dependant which bit of London, but you reckon you'll be in brum by 4 if you leave at 2.... Oh my sides!!!
I had to go down there the other day
Left home (South manchester) at 05.45 got to South bank at 11.15. Stopped for 10 minutes
Horrid
Anyway do the toll.
Good luck
As mentioned above

Damn fine idea in my opinion.
Re the OP. I have been doing Manchester-Coleshill-Manchester almost daily for the last 6 months, toll road all the time.
The biggest problem is the collective stupidity that begins around junction 14 Northound, normally the white german car bellendery trying to look up each others bumoles causing all the tailbacks.
@bob summers
Your route us terrible , no one should use that route
Please never mention it again cause I go that way and its usually fairly quiet
You can carry on the A500 and come out higher up the M6 as well
Hope you didn't go M6! It looked shithouse going northbound and wasn't a bundle of laughs southbound!!
Hi UFG.
*waves*
I left Glasgow at about 2:15pm in my new2me car so we probably passed each other around Warrington - although northbound looked a shocker generally.
6hrs door to door m6 toll
Bit of traffic but nothing major
37mpg not bad in a 3litre petrol
Happy all round !
Sitting on a hillock is glorious sun with a flask of coffee !
