Having suffered for 20 years or so with a pain whenever I eat many things, and the need to carry Rennies round at all times, I've had a revelation this week.
I've been to the Doc's a few times to see if he can do anything, he gave me a test to see if I had a certain bacteria causing it, I didnt, so put me on Lansaprazole(sp?).
These were great for 3 years or so, then he pulled me in a couple of years ago, saying we've got to reduce use of the drug, as it is causing osteoporosis (spelling again?), and other side effects, so I was to only take them when absolutely required, and I was to use anti-acid tablets (rennies etc) when required.
So, for the last 2 weeks, I've noticed a distinct lack of needing to take a Rennie. I didnt really notice it, until this week, when there was an unopened packet in my work box. Then, I went to make a tea, and found the bags we were using were De-caf PG tips. I hadnt noticed the taste difference at all, even if there is one.
I bought de-caf for home use too, and have took no rennies at all this week.
Maybe a fluke, but googling shows that caffeine can cause these symptoms, so maybe I've finally found the cure for my own trouble - if you too suffer, maybe try it and see how you get on. What has annoyed me is that my GP has never mentioned that caffeine could be causing the excess acid.
Nice one!
Bet you feel like a dog with two cocks!
😀
Wish I could get rid of mine 😥
Suffered from this for a few years now, have to take 20mg Omeprazole after my lats meal or I get reflux in the night. Caffeine was mentioned to me but cutting it out (2-3 mugs of tea a day usually) didn't make any difference. Eating a plain, non-spicy diet works best for me.
Caffeine really makes my acid reflux worse. I have decaf teabags at home and limit coffee consumption to a couple of cups a day. I find Boots own brand heartburn relief tablets work well when I've had too much coffee or red wine.
I've never found coffee/caffeine a problem.
Garlic and Alcohol were a real issue for me so I cut out both.
I was on Omeprazole but only for about 6 months.
I've found going lactose free has helped a lot.
Interesting. I suffer a little with this, so I'll try to cut out caffeine for a week or so, see if anything changes. I've noticed certain types of beer exacerbate the issue, as does eating things like chocolate, cheese and fats late at night. Which is a shame, because I love beer, chocolates, cheese and fatty meats late at night. 🙁
Worst heartburn I ever had was after I experimented with the 'espresso then fasted ride' system.
Yes it's about finding what triggers it.
I had to stop with caffeine, most sugary things and alcohol.
I had Lansoprazole for a few weeks to help with possible ulcer.
I still get stomach issues on and off. I also used Mastika herb too . Took a while to clear things up.
I've been on Lansaprazole since January and the doctor has never mentioned anything about osteoporosis or other side effects. I just picked up another batch today.
Edit: it's because I have a hiatus hernia.
Mine is linked to stress ...
Tried that at first and made no odds, if I go without my Omeprazole for more than a day or two I feel awful.
Similar to others above. Reflux is due to a Hiatus Hernia. I take omaprazole when things are bad, but I generally keep it in check having totally cut out caffeine. So no coffee and only decaf tea, I've also cut out lactose and have my brew with lacto free milk. I can hardly taste the difference, and well worth it considering the benefits. Having said that the effects of coming off the addiction to caffeine was truly awful.
There's always one. Often it's me.
I've been on Omeprazole for four years now, because I'm on Warfarin. I've recently had heartburn in the early hours of most nights. I tried stopping the Om. for a week, in case it was the culprit. The heartburn stopped. This week I'm back on the stuff, wondering if the hearturn will return.
I find a few apples a day work well for me and my hiatus hernia. Most people think it’s crazy, but they seem to calm the symptoms and have a long term benefit, to the point where I didn’t carry rennies for over a year. Too much drink and chorizo recently though.
I take 20mg Omeprazole every morning on empty stomach about 10mins before breakfast.
Have been doing so for about 8 years.
Afaik there are no well known or common side effects.
I hope im mot wrong :-S
You're wrong.
All drugs have side effects...
PPIs can effect electrolytes, cause diarrhoea, and may be linked to bone density. If you take clopodogrel you need to be on lanzoprazole..
However...life isn't perfect...your doctor should have discussed risk vs benefit, and together made the decision...
FWIW, I often take omeprazole for the benefits - I feel they outweigh the risk...

What an enlightening thread. Seriously.
Have been struggling with dodgy guts for about six years. Daily pain, etc. Have cut out wheat/gluten as far as is possible, and that definitely helps. But I had no idea there could be so many other things going on.
On the strength of reading this, I might have to go to the doctor. 😐
I put off for years and really wish i hadn't given the huge difference its done for me.
Came off Lanaprazole in 2010 and opted for the surgery instead. Totally stopped any acid or reflux. Just have to eat chicken and nan bread slowly.
I should own shares in Rennie....
but after being to the Docs and basically being diagnosed with nothing more than a need to change diet and lifestyle rather than a medical problem..My causes in order seem to be;
Stress (work related)
Coffee and fried breakfasts and beer
Massive weekends....
Real Ale
Fatty food
Biggest thing I did was change my job and it reduced my reflux massively
@mangoman - I read somewhere, yonks ago, that apples are acid, but the acid content is quickly absorbed leaving a neutralising effect. I've no idea if this is still accepted.
Certainly feels that way. I think bananas have a similar PH, but I don’t get on that well with bananas.
A friend had surgery for a hiatus hernia recently and, at the age of 31, has been able to burp for the first time in yearse. He’s not great to be around at the moment.
Firstly thays great news. Secondly why on earth didn't the doctor or indeed you yourself try varying your diet years ago ? Diet management is something my mother has to do for migraine, also sensitivities seem to vary as well so I suspect its something you'll have to persist with if it starts to come back
Anway, good news 🙂
Glad you've found some relief OP. Interesting that so many of the 'avoid' foods are similarly linked to IBS. Especially interesting to see garlic listed - it is one of many FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide, monosarrachide and polyols) so might also be worth seeing if reducing other key FODMAP foods like onions, leeks, beans, lentils, high fructsoe fruit, etc also helps.
DrP is there an issue you're aware of with taking Clopidigrel and Omeprazole together? I've been doing this for nearly a year, no Doctors or consultants so far have said there's a problem
A customers wife recently started sprinkling Inulin on her breakfast, as recommended by the Angela Ripping ageing documentary and has experienced a very obvious and unexpected improvement in her reflux problems.
On a related topic, anyone had their gallbladder removed? How did it affect you?
Wilko omeprazole decreases the effectiveness of clopidogrel but lansoprazole doesn't.
It's more likely to be a pharmacist that tells you about these problems than a dr.
If you are on this combination take them at opposite ends of the day.
Inulin - isn't that stuff in Jerusalem artichokes, a sort of different starch? Leading to their alternate name of fartychokes? Though maybe one's system gets used to it. I didn't persevere.

Acid reflux sufferer for 7 years here. Been on PPI (Omeprazole, then Esomeprazole, now Lansoprazole) for most of those years so I can understand your pain.
Caffeine is a well-known trigger as it relaxes the lower oesophageal sphincter. Alcohol does this too, as well as causing gastritis (irritation of the stomach lining). Caffeine and alcohol also causes the stomach to produce excess acid. Coffee is one of my worst trigger foods and gives me crippling stomach pain. If I drink more than a couple of cups of tea a day I get some symptoms too.
I'm slowly trying to wean myself off PPI drugs because of the long term health uncertainties. Totally avoiding caffeine and alcohol is very hard but if you cut down substantially and also avoid fatty meals where possible it really helps.
DGL licorice, slippery elm, powdered glutamine, and licorice / fennel / camomile tea also really help.
Good luck finding a long term solution.
Bicarbonate of soda / lemon juice // lime juice /apple cider vinegar .. Try to alkalize your body - chill on the animal protein .. Look into monitoring your P.H. levels if you feel being empirical may help you ..
If anyone is wanting to cut this drug from their life try a 25% dose reduction every week to 10 days or you can suffer...
Patients with ambiguous symptoms that are not truly acid-related may develop truly acid-related symptoms, when discontinuing antisecretory treatment, necessitating continuous PPI treatment.http://fampra.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2014/09/04/fampra.cmu050.full
I found the acid could flare when trying to reduce too much too quickly; tapering is favourable.
I feel better without them (8 years of use until about 3 weeks ago) and have suffered very little reflux since working out what food and drink promote it.
Thanks docrobster that's very useful information. As luck would have it I take the clopidogrel before breakfast and the Omeprazole after tea. Although the Omeprazole is taken at the same time as my atorvastatin, wonder if it affects those? I'm going to see my GP this week for clarification I think considering the Clopidigrel and atorvastatin are to reduce the chances of another stroke!
I have been a heavy user of Rennies all my adult life, especially after drinking beer. They do the job wthout the need for drugs. In recent years I've become less able to digest cellulose in the form of apples and baked beans, both of which cause bloating and wind, which is uncomfortable.
I mentioned the Rennies thing to my cycling buddy who is a gastroenterologist and he just laughed: "I'll bring an endoscope home and have a look for you!" which reinforced my determination not to fall into the hands of the medics, so Rennies it is for me. I must have spent hundreds of pounds on them.
Curiously on our recent holiday in France I only needed two Rennies in the entire week so I'm sure stress plays a part too.
I've been taking 30mg Lansoprazole for near on 20 years. Recently I've tried to come off of them. but can't get beyond a couple of days before it so uncomfortable and I have to go back on them. I keep trying to get an appointment with my GP to talk about reducing the dosage and eventally coming off them altogether. But it's seems impossible to get to see him.
I looked into what triggers the reflux and it seems that all of the foods I love triggers it.
The side effects can be embarrassing, especially in the office first thing. 😳
I have read none of the thread other than the OP, but I have to ask. Given the condition, why were you never tempted to knock caffeine on the head to see if it helped at any point previously?
Anyone have any thoughts on decaf coffee still being a culprit?
I (OP) drink plenty of tea, never coffee. It has never crossed my mind that the caffeine in tea would cause it, I thought it was certain foods - bacon, especially smoked, Walkers crisps, Alpen.
I wake every day and have 2 mugs of tea, then, as I work in building, will have tea through the day, get home, kettle goes on for 2 more, so I get a pretty large intake through the day. The Site I'm on now has all the tea supplied, in a clear plastic case, I've been there 3 weeks. and saw them filling it up one day from a De-caf box, it then clicked that I had been taking very few Rennies that week. I bought De-caf for home use that day, and have not took any Rennies this week.
It seems I may have found my own trigger cause, so hopefully this will help someone else who, like me, didnt realise that caffeine could be the cause.
Side effects this week - a throbbing headache for 2 days - caffeine cold turkey?
I've stopped coffee for 2weeks now!So I must be going through some withdrawals.I'm trying to find the trigger for my problem, which gets worse when I exercise
I have been on omeprazole since someone told me about it a few years ago, it made a world of difference to me.
Now I'm trying to ensure its not a gut flora thing, supposedly the good bacteria need feeding the right foods, and the bad bacteria dont want to be encouraged
So no coffee, alcohol, sugar, grains, but bananas apples, oats, lots of protein are good
It has made a difference so far, more than conventional medicine has, but I'm convinced yet
Not a help to you to you OP but I used to get it hideously. I was on prescription meds the lot. Then by chance I figured out why. Every Sat am I'd have a fry up with baked beans. Then I'd head off for my ride.
Beans.
