Is this a done thing at all?
My in-laws are adamant you leave them a few quid if they’ve done a good job on top of the final bill. I am unconvinced.
It’s bathroom fitters if that makes any difference.

I've given beers or a bottle of malt with a bill payment for good work.
I've also gone well out my way to provide good reviews and recommend them on as well.
I can't say I've ever tipped a tradesperson though.
But then most of them charge more than my daily rate... ☹️

I have never expected tips (electrician) but i do appreciate it if a customer gives me a bottle of something.

Would i give another tradesman a tip? Yes, definitely, especially if they have done something at very short notice or got me out of the you know what....

If the service has been particularly good or something else exceptional I will give them beers

Our bathroom fitters are 10 weeks in to a 2 week fit due to continuing and ongoing **** ups. Flooring has had to be laid 3 times, we're on the 3rd bath including one where they put a screw through the bottom of it and the shower screen needed 5 goes to fit. They messed up and pissed water through the kitchen roof twice. Even now they haven't resolved the old vent the just pushed out of the wall so it's hanging lose over the conservatory. We don't have the bath, flooring, shower screen or taps we ordered because of their incompetence.

So no, no tips from me. I'm currently working on the scale of the reductions.

They usually add 20‰ that they failed to mention when quoting.

Tend not to. Neve really occurred to me to do so. It's not a job that relies on tipping. They're not working for big companies usually. Tradespeople where I am are super busy, massively in demand, you have a significant waiting time before you can get them in so they're not struggling for work and charge accordingly. Most decent tradespeople I've used I've recommended to friends and they've, in most cases, had a significant amount of additional business off the back of my recommendation, and the further follow on recommendations. They rely more on word of mouth and recommendations and that seems to be of significant value to them...more so than a token few quid or a case of cheap beer. I'm sure they'd soon be inundated with cheap beer if they received that off every customer...they'd be sick of it.

Don't get the 'I tip if they do a good job'. What quality of job are you expecting from them? Why would you employ a tradesperson not certain they are going to do a good job? A good job is the minimum you should expect. It's what you are paying for.

No chance unless it was a mate doing it at "mate's rate"

I don't expect a tip, and it's rare to get one. That makes sense to me, as the customer has normally just handed over a few grand anyway.

I did get a £90 bottle of very nice malt a couple of years ago, but I was working for a distillery 🙂

We had a plasterer do our lounge a few years back. Did a really quick clean job. Still looks good. He was a friend of a friend so did it at a silly low price. Bunged an extra £50 in there to bring it more in line with other quotes we'd had. But that's the exception rather than the rule.

I'm a stonemason. I don't want tips, I want happy customers who recommend me to their friends and colleagues.
That and quick payment once my invoice is in, by the end of a job I'm usually flat broke from paying for materials and labourers.

That said a cold beer with the customer at the end of the job is always nice.

I pay promptly and when they've helped me out by doing the job at very short notice (getting property ready for letting) I have given them some cash and some beer as well.

If the guys are working for someone else (not sole traders) and have done a good job I do tip. I also don’t ask for “mates rates” from mates since it’s their livelihood.

For homers from lads in the village I give them a bit more than what they ask for (because it’s usually less than I think it should be) plus some beers. For big stuff I just pay the bill.
