Now, where did I put my snake oil, magic beans and power balance band?
I reckon there is am element of truth to that if you live somwhere hot... Cooler interior so less load on the air conditioner.
Fail for me then.
We got our rear windows tinted as the sun shades we had for the little'un did naff all 90% of the time. The tints are brilliant and he's much happier in the back now.
Also, his drug selling business has become safer.....

That is school boy science, air con reduces fuel efficiency, so just turn it off if you want to save fuel, or like me, don't have it at all.
Pah!
From the second link.
So how does heating your car increase fuel consumption? All the cars I have owned have heating provided as a lucky extra from having to keep the engine cool. Surely having the heating turned on in winter helps to keep the engine cool reducing the need for the radiator fan. Therefore saving fuel?

Don't scoff too hard. A friend of mine specialises in energy efficient building design, and a lot of it revolves around incorporating glass, vents, blinds and walls in the right places to maximise heating and cooling from the sun and the air and minimise the demand for independent heating and air conditioning.
This is the same thing: a spec. reducing heating from the sun reduces the demand for artificial cooling.
So how does heating your car increase fuel consumption
who mentioned heating ?
It's all about the air-con...
Tinted windows - or "Ugly Children Cars" as our children call them...
Turnerguy have a read of the second link, its in there.
It's normal in the Middle East, I assume it's so that the women of the family, who will be sitting in the back, don't have to cover up.
as the belt connecting my air con fan and the alternator that power the fan are already spinning then what is the actual extra fuel load placed on the engine by me turning them on?
I accept there will be some but how much? I suspect it is negligible hence why no figures are quoted in either link. I suspect it also depends on how quickly you cool the car , how you drive and a multitude of other factors.
it does make the interior cooler but it is a leap IMHO to assume that this will lead to anything other than barely detectable/ marginal fuel savings
Junkyard - Memberas the belt connecting my air con fan and the alternator that power the fan are already spinning then what is the actual extra fuel load placed on the engine by me turning them on?
Well it robbed my previous car of 4bhp (we tested a couple of the same car model rolling road one day, bored!), and the engine map changed and used more fuel. I think in the past i've read it uses 10% more fuel with air-con on full chat, but that might've been exaggerated.
An AC compressor on full chat in a high spec (luxury) type car can take up to 15bhp. In a low spec car it will easily be 4 or 5bhp.
Given that at 70mph an average car is probably using somewhere between 50 and 70bhp, the additional load of AC is considerable.
So, reducing the load on the AC system will give fuel economy benefits, but the biggest benefit is to turn it off.
Cars haven't had 'fan' belts for many years. They are driven by an electric motor on demand from the water temperature sensor. The alternator and water pump have to run all the time so they are belt driven.as the belt connecting my air con fan and the alternator that power.....
shirley the extra slowing down and speeding up every time you get pulled over by the rozzers will negate any fuel saving
as above I should have said compressor and was not referring to the radiator fan which has no function in an AC system anyway.
anyway I googled and got 1 mpg if a 400 watt load is created by the compressor load or for a truck
the consolidated data suggest that air conditioning has a minimal affect on fuel consumption”.
So, reducing the load on the AC system will give fuel economy benefits, but the biggest benefit is to turn it off.
Well, if you're going to make that observation, then the biggest fuel economy benefit would be to turn the car engine off.
Konabunny
you're right, you may as well turn the engine off. FFS. 🙄
You can save even more money and not buy a car. How far do you want to go with ridiculous and unnecessary suggestions?
