I’m off to relive my youth but taking old man ears with me.

Can anyone recommend some comfy , don’t know they are there volume reducers?

Ive not seen a band since getting a bad ear. It comes and goes for no apparent reason.

Is loud music going to kick it off or is it all down to internal factors rather than external?

I have tinnitus, much of the time I don't notice it or it isn't there. Mine is worse with stress.

Going to see a band will kick it off.

Some sort of hearing protection is a good idea.

There are loads of earplugs designed for musicians and intended to have a decent frequency response while attenuating to a goodly degree. Try searching for "musician's earplugs" for many options, although those Senner ones are along the lines of what I mean.

I wouldn't go and see a live band without some now. I often find I can hear the band better with the earplugs than without!

I'm convinced that Motorhead at the Manchester Apollo in 1986 was the start of mine. I just use ear plugs from work cut in half now. Reduces the noise significantly. Of course now you've got me aware of the tinnitus so I'll be hearing the whistle all day now. Cheers :0/

I've got some of these (with a different brand on them but they're the same) I've played the drums since I was 9 (40 now so ears have taken a battering) and have some mild tinnitus, luckily was smart enough to start wearing plugs while playing in my early late teens so could be much worse. Didn't start wearing plugs at gigs until I was in my 30s but always do now.

The above ones I bought for riding my motorbike but there were 2 full pairs in the box so I wear one on my bike and one at gigs. They're super comfy and I can happily wear them for a few hours no bother at all

I've been dead lucky - seeing bands since I was 16 and never had an issue with the loudness, despite scares when seeing Death Grips (that ****ing HURT!) and Gilla Band recently - so I bought some Alpine "Party plugs" from Boots. Tried them, during a support band, and they worked well. But I just like it loud, so not used them since.

Shouldn't have read this. Got the sound of a jet engine in my head now.

I swear by these. The ringing in my ears after watching live music reached the point where it put me off going, but with these it's totally different. You get to actually hear the music too instead of the distortion from speakers cranked up to 120dB.

I use the MusicSafe earplugs that Flaperon linked to. My ears are only a couple of feet from my snare drum & cymbals, and they’re very loud.

I also use them at gigs, don’t really notice they’re there, tbh

After reading this, having recently realised I have tinnitus (cause unknown) and knowing I'm going to a gig tomorrow, I nipped into Forsyth's on Deansgate in Manchester at lunchtime and bought some Alpine Party Plugs.

As an aside, Forsyth's is an absolutely amazing shop...

MrSparkle - I too was at that Motorhead gig and I too have tinnitus. Correlation is not causation, but...

Happy days though, eh?

I use muscians ear plugs, mine come with inserts you can change to vary the attenuation. They make chatting at a gig imposssible, but I can clearly hear the music without making my tinitus worse.

I have the same problem, there's a German brand called loop, they are by far the most comfortble and effective I've ever used.

I’ve been using Rooth musicians earplugs for some time, previously I used the squidgy yellow foam ones, ‘cos I got them free from work, but the musicians ones are a lot better because of the frequency filtering, and they’re more comfortable as well.

I have tinnitus as a direct result of standing in front of the speaker stack when I saw Grand Slam, Phil Lynott’s band after Thin Lizzy, when they played Golddiggers in Chippenham. Christ, but they were loud!

As above, there are lots of different makes, with different styles, but they all do the same thing. Make sure you get ones with a decent carrying case that you can put on your keys, they’re easy to lose otherwise. I think I’ve got four sets on different keyrings.

I've got some Eytomotic ER20s which I always carry around with me. Lots of alternative choices now and they'll all reduce the noise. Musician style plugs are miles better than foam ear plugs, which make everything sound very muddy.

I've since invested in some ACS fitted ear plugs which are just like turning down the volume and you forget you have them in. Only for regular gig goers/muscians though because of the price and hassle of getting them.

I would not see a gig without earplugs. If you ask behind the bar, they should be able to provide you with foam ones. If not, then I'd nip to a chemist and get foam plugs, rather than risk damaging your hearing. It's good to see so many of the younger generation wearing earplugs at concerts, where as for me at that age it was seen as being soft and uncool. I think theres a fair few middle aged people suffering from tinnitus as a result of that culture.

I've got hyperaccusis as well as Tinnitis (increased sensitivity) and I've used ER20s successfully at a DJ Shadow gig which was pretty loud, also recently bought some Senner MusicPros which seem good and are a bit more discreet.

I’ve had permanent tinnitus since 2013 (landed on my head during the mega) it’s pretty bad, worse when tired / stressed. I tried some plug in things awhile back, which were useless. I’ve just used the power of acceptance to deal with it. 😬

The only thing that’s worried me over the years is that mine is 80-90% in my right ear.

meh
