Got a meeting that finishes at 1 pm about 40 mins drive North of New York (in Tarrytown) and my return flight is at 7.30 pm from Newark. Given that I'll need to be at the airport around 5, is there any point trying to get into NY for an hour or so? I've got a hire car, but I'm guessing it would be pointless trying to drive into the city, so I'd imagine I'd have to use a park and ride or something similar. My sums (based on google maps) suggest I'd probably get into NY around 2.30, but I think I'd have to leave around 3.45/4 to get to the airport.

It's been quite a busy/stressful trip so far, so I'm wondering if I should just find a nice coffee shop en route to the airport and chill out there instead of stressing out trying to figure out public transport?

Decide where you'd like to go, then Google Street View it from the airport. with coffee

I'd just concentrate on getting to the airport on time, the routes can be challenging at times, especially the New Joisy Turnpike.
Unless they've upgraded it since I was last there, Newark airport is a good replica of a 1970s works canteen, but at least you can relax and unwind before your red eye.

Yeah, that's what I figured (apart from the knocking one out). Newark airport is seriously cack though, it's amazing how bad some of the US airports are compared with the European ones!

JFK is no better. I'd also find something more local, rushing to get into NYC will just make you wish you had more time there. Find a local hipster coffee joint and relax for a bit.

I'd be heading to the airport, the traffic round there is horrendous.

Can you not get on the airport train to Hoboken for a few cheeky beers, I seem to remember there being a fast train shuttle service?
You could even catch the PATH train from Hobeken and be in mid-town in no time at all.

I'd be heading straight for the airport, getting checked in and finding a quiet corner. No way would I subject myself to extra stress going away then trying to get back.
