Has anyone else noticed the BBC Sports reports of late? BBC breakfast is the worst, but its creeping in across the board.

Firstly it was women's football, after the men's, describing the game that no one even knew was happening, like it was important!

Then women's cricket....talking about The Ashes matches that no one even knew was going on, let alone were interested!

Finally the other day, when there was so many other things to talk about, they started going on about a female arsenal player who was leaving and going to play for another team. I like football, support Arsenal, but have never heard of this woman, as the team she plays for couldn't beat the Arsenal under 15's boys team!

Absolutely nothing against women....I have three daughters and wife, but they aren't slightly interested either, so who is it aimed at?

(apologies for the lack of capitals and swear filter avoidance )

Good question. A lot of women's boxing matches are being put high on the bill of undercards - the commentators try to sell it, but I hit FFWD every time.

To balance, the women's rugby 7s in the Olympics was brilliant. Watched loads of that.

To the OP because (wider) recognition for women's sport needs to start somewhere.

I do not read the Grauniad or Socialist Worker.

It's bad enough when they talk about cycling that no one knows is going on.

Why can't they stick to football, rugby and cricket? Played by men.

Chicken and egg isn't it? People are not aware of it/interested as there's no coverage and there's coverage as there's no interest/awareness. So, in my opinion rightly, they have decided to generate some interest by talking about it and showing it.

Related, did anyone else hear Sara Orchard commentating on the England-Aus rugby match at the weekend? She was absolutely brilliant.

I am trying to see the OP's point but I really can't. I have little interest in women's football, just as I have little interest in men's curling or any form of horse dancing.

But I am not the BBC's target audience, I am a consumer of information they share being a news outlet and some other people will be much more interested in reading about women's football or judo or sailing than they would be about road racing or Leeds United or The Ashes or F1.

EDIT: However, I have found myself getting interested in some of the women's events (especially when 'we' are doing well. For example, I have started to read a few articles about the women's Ashes tour.

It's just as important as men's sport. And surely if no-one knew it was happening, that's a great reason to tell everyone about?

The womans English team gets more highlighted coverage than the Scottish premier league. Nothing to do with them being female, just that they are English. The BBC is biased.

Not sure, she was doing the main commentary though. I thought she was brilliant, picked up a few things the no-one else did, was very knowledgeable and generally did the job well. Irrelevant of her sex, she was as good a commentator as I've heard for a while.

Wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same things.

I do wonder however whether the BBC has a much bigger focus on women's sport these days not just because they want to promote excellent women's sport (which I wholeheartedly applaud) but also because the TV rights are a lot cheaper than the men's versions, prices inflated hugely out of proportion by the Murdochs & co of this world?

The argument that 'women are worse at the sports' is fatuous anyway, because there's been coverage for years of men's sports where the team being reported on are crap.

Scottish premier league.

Well, don't leave us in suspense! Match report and final score, please!

The Woodkirk Valley Under 12s had a disappointing result on Saturday: 2 - 1 down at half time but performing strongly and dominating possession, it all fell apart in the 2nd half and it ended with a 6-2 defeat.

When I'm in charge - and it must be my turn soon - all pro sports events that are gender specific would have to run parallel events for men and women, have equal prize money, pay, sponsorship and media coverage.

If we have it, they will come. So to speak.

Saying you have no interest in the mass media's coverage of a sport because you have never heard of the people involved, and didn't know the event was taking place, is like telling your Doctor you're not interested in the result of your medical scan because you' weren't aware you were ill and have never heard of the illness. Either watch it and learn something, or turn it off. TBH I don't care either way.

Plus Dion Dublin is now on Homes Under the Hammer, which adds to the over-representation of the men's game on the BBC.

Me too! I may have dreamed it, but I remember a fair bit of Ozzie Rules football cropping up when I was younger, which was also a lot more entertaining than most sports.

I hate it when I watch the TV and the sports news comes on talking about football, players and managers that I have no idea who they are, no knowledge of the games being played as if it is important and I should give a monkeys, which I don't.

Also, why is my BBC news feed telling about someone I have never heard of 'going into the jungle' which I assume is referring to a TV show that I have no interest in. This is not news.

Hurrah, glad someone's finally said it. I've watched more than the odd women's football match and it's mostly rubbish. generally school boy level defending, it's embarrassing. As for the women's Ashes give me break, since Sky took over the cricket hardly anyone cares about the proper Ashes, let alone the women's version.

I have no problem with media covering any sport but stuff that makes the mainstream news, the level of coverage should reflect the true level of interest.

The womens football attracts crowds on par with the National league.

When do you ever hear any news of Gateshead's latest transfer on the Radio 4 news?

Cobblers. If the beeb just pandered to populist choice, the news would cover nothing more than who's eating weird bits of animals in a jungle, which Essex or Chelsea based reality muppet was shagging which and, for the oldsters, why everything's shit and was better in the olden days. If that's what you want, the Daily Mail is available on paper and online.

That said, the (women's) Euro semi-final got 4 million viewers which was more than Celebrity Big Brother, so it's hardly an obscure minority sport with no interest.

But the standard of play was still embarrassingly awful.

Even if it was, surely the best way to remedy that is to get more girls into playing football?

And a good way to do that is for them to see other women playing football on telly to provide some positive role models.

Sounds like something a public service broadcaster might do...

I agree with the OP - I couldn't care less about the women's football result. Did they play a match, can't say I'd noticed?

Mind you the same goes for the men's football.

Women's cricket though, some impressive skills on display there. Especially from Sarah Taylor the keeper.

There is on Sky.

But on the more general point I think it is a perfectly sensible for the BBC to promote women's sport as this fits in with their wider remit. However, it is worth asking why it is the women's versions of men's sport seem to get the coverage rather than say Netball which has much higher participation levels than Rugby or Cricket. It may simply be becausr those sports are pumping a lot of money into the women's game.

I have mixed views on watching women's sport which are full of contradictions as I am quite evangelical on participation. Can't watch soccer, but not a big watcher of the men's game. Can't watch Rugby football even though this was very much my game, just can't get to grips with women being that physically aggressive. But really enjoy watching hockey and cricket, which my daughter does, and I regard going to the Women's World Cup final as one of the best days out I have had at a sporting event - top 5 certainly.

Is it? Really?

Well these sorts of things the BBC Charter and Agreement might cover it:

..should encourage people to explore new subjects and participate in new activities through partnerships with educational, sporting and cultural institutions...

..to broaden sports coverage, to better support sports which currently receive less broadcast coverage...

..the BBC must have particular regard to the need to
reflect underrepresented communities.

..should accurately and authentically represent and portray the lives of the people of the United Kingdom today, and raise awareness of the different cultures and alternative viewpoints that make up its society.

Who decides what the social engineering should be aiming at?

Director General + the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport I suppose.

Given that men earn more than women it's a safe bet that they contribute more to the licence fee too. That means that women are already over-represented on the BBC.
