i've done brick joint pattern tiling a fair amount.
the tiles i'm about to lay on my current job, 25x40cm wall tiles, say specifically on the packaging not to brick joint; that something lile up to 40% overlap is ok (don't remember exact figure), but no more.

why would this be? the only idea i've had is something to do with the pattern, perhaps you'd see the print too obviously. i'll check that today.

anyone know of another reason?

Cheap Chinese tile?
Cupped meaning you'll not get a decent install without lippage if you install brick.
Put them face to face, you'll see they're not flat.

Dirksdiggler is spot on, other than limiting it to cheap Chinese tile.

Basically, they won’t be flat enough for a satisfactory job. Sometimes you can get away with it but the manufacturers won’t guarantee it. I’ve had very expensive German, Italian and Spanish made tiles that aren’t all the flat or square even. I’ve seen a lot also that are 1mm smaller in the middles than the edges, which doesn’t sound a lot but when you cut them in half to do the offset, the spacing is to cock without correction.

that'll be it i guess. they seem to be spanish, but who knows? daft innit that rather than make them right in the first place, they go to the trouble of printing on the packaging.
but i gues it could just be arse covering and they're achly fine.

best finish this coffee and get some out and see ey?

yep, its cupping. they seem to be rectified edges (not sure what they call that in English).
they ate spot on 250mm; there's no dift over 3 or 4 courses.
but the face to face test shows a little dicrepancy.
laying a few out tho it look manageable, so i think ill go ahead

yeah it's arse covering. I've done offset joint on plenty of tiles that say not to and it's generally ok, you just need to play with them a little sometimes.

Yup as above, doesn't seem to matter how expensive they are.

Our en-suite is done with similar sized tiles (big plain white ones on 3 walls, printed slate effect ones on the floor and remaining wall). Solution is to just check them before you buy. I think we got ours from homebase in the end but i'd looked at 4-5 from different suppliers to find that out.
