Today I ****screwed up.
Working on the sander making some deco bits for a shop facade. One moment of not paying attention and whoop... the bit of wood jams and slaps my finger into the sanding belt.
Pulled my hands back just in time.
My finger nail is several microns thinner and has a hole in the middle of it.
Bloody lucky. Bloody hurts.

Medic! 😮
I got a hurty finger from reversing a screw out using a drill, got my finger caught between the back of drill and the side of the cupboard, right squashed my finger, nothing broken but still not right weeks later.
Injuries like that make me cringe oddly!😕
Yet something with blood and a flap of skin and I'm basically "whatever".Lol
I did this to my middle finger when I was 18. Crushed in a fork lift truck mast, the skin was peeled from one knuckle to the other and there was a 1/4 inch gap in the break of the middle segment. It can't straighten, as the top tendon is gone, the bottom one is okay so I can still grip with it.
It came in handy sometimes, as an older teenager/young twenty something 😀
Top tip, cut out a couple of layers of teabag and use clear nail varnish to stick them onto the nail, and a top coat.
I've split the nail on my big toe about 4 weeks ago, this holds it all together whilst it grows out, seems to last a couple of weeks before starting to lift...and when it does you can just peel it off and redo it.
Cheers spooky.... But it's still a bit oozy...

When I started using a circular saw someone told me it's better to ask myself before the cut rather than after; "where are my fingers?"
Oh cringe, looks nasty and sorry to say the fix is probably going to be painful too. I'd try the tested wash, lots of antiseptic cream and an elastoplast, changing that daily.
If you go to hospital, they'll likely want to remove the entire nail, although they do supply an excellent brand of finger numbing juice, so that bit wont hurt, but it will mean possibly longer healing time and torture chamber dressing changes.
At least giving it a go yourself before opting for the hospital.
I pinched the end off my index finger aged 15 on a metal shaping machine.
You're suppose to have a brush to clean the shavings away, and I didnt, nor was there guarding, coupled with the card school the lecturers were running with the technicians, so we were unsupervised. 24 stitched to reattach.
I'll keep an eye on it and hope it isn't infected.
If you go to hospital,
If I go to hospital it'll likely cost me upwards of 300€....I've an excess of 800€ on my health insurance. If I don't claim anything in a year I get a kick back of 500€.... Whooop di Whooop.
A few years back I got my right Index finger crushed and pulled it away, losing the fleshy finger tip in the process. Went to hospital for that. Changing the bandages was gruesome.
Superglue. Put some onto the damaged area, and let it dry, put some more on with some thin tissue onto the wet glue and let dry, then wrap some Micropore medical tape around the fingertip.
I sliced along the entire length of my thumbnail once on holiday with a very sharp Opinel while cutting some kindling, so about half an inch towards the knuckle, and almost as deep, sort of a triangle. I pinched the flap of skin tight and ran it under a nearby tap, dried it, and then wondered what the hell to do. All I had was a tube of superglue and some kitchen paper towel, and loo roll, so I one-handed tore some bits of tissue, put superglue on it and wrapped it round my thumb, and blew on it to get it to dry, then did a bit more. Bloody tricky one handed, and trying to hold the ends of the tissue in place without glueing everything else together. Took ages, and ended up with the whole end of my thumb wrapped in superglue-soaked tissue.
I had no idea how it would heal, but eventually the tissue just fell off, after about a month, and there was no sign of any damage, no scar or anything.
These days I make sure I’ve got proper first-aid kits about, including steri-strips, microporous tape, the works, still think using superglue and tissue worked best, though.
Oooh I know, we could have untreated wound top trumps! Here goes:
A couple of years ago out in the woods I'd veered a bit off-piste and was riding really slowly around a tree stump when the front wheel just skidded out on loose dirt and I fell off with my arm landing on a lump of razor sharp flint. I was somewhat concerned as it made a nice flappy bit of skin close to my wrist where I believe there's some big veins knocking about. I bared my chest to tie my t-shirt around it after splashing a few drops of water from a manky camelbak and then put on a semi-transparent fluorescent waterproof jacket and cycled back to the car with a white face and my arm in the air. After getting ready to drive back home I'd decided I didn't need to go to the hospital so just cleaned it up and bandaged. I now have a nice 40mm x 5mm scar there.
Done a few things. Worst was when laying flags for the greenhouse, we were re-using some 2x3 concrete ones. Dropped one on the end of my ring finger - it didn't half hurt. It's still numb some 15 years later.
More recently, shoved some rubbish further into the black wheelie bin, and scraped my wrist on the sharp plastic edge. Didn't think much about it, other than it stung abit, and bled - it was like someone had skimmed off skin with a potatoe peeler. Scabbed over but got infected - popped to pharmacy for advice and used iodine infused dressing. This cleared up the infection, but I'm left with a fair old scar on my wrist - 40mm x 10mm, from a simple scratch. Oh well, one more doesn't matter.
Superglue.
Ahhh, did similar last weekend with an angle grinder, buzzed the edges of the tips of two fingers taking some of the nail with it. One week later it doesn’t look much, other than a bit of a notch where a bit of finger used to be but every now and then I bash it by accident and by jingo it’s very hurty!
If I go to hospital it’ll likely cost me upwards of 300€….I’ve an excess of 800€ on my health insurance.
You pay for medical care?
You pay for medical care?
In Germany as a self employed person, yes.
If you're an employee you pay 7.5% and your employer matches it with another 7.5%.
Being self employed I get to shop around for a better deal. K
I pay relatively little, 240€/month, but have a large excess and a very basic tariff.
No single room if in hospital, but on a ward.
No treatment from the main doctor, just his /her underlings (yes this is a thing in Germany).
No free ambulance to the hospital.
Have to see my GP before getting anything other than emergency treatment. (broke my shoulder a few years back. First doc missed it on the xray. Three weeks later and still in pain I went direct to a sports specialist Klinik who put me through an MRI and instantly saw my shoulder was broken, but being too late to operate on. That visit cost me 2200€ and my insurance didn't pay out reasoning that my Hausarzt (GP) hadn't given me the green light to go there.)
An excess of 800€ for any treatment (if I don't claim I get a kickback of 500€ each year... If I claim I lose that and start again. Two years no kickback and then goes up each year in 100€ increments up to 500€ max. If figure I've got to fork out >2000€ on medical bills before making a claim makes financial sense due to the loss of the kickback. You're essentially encouraged by your insurer not to seek medical treatment).
All German health care is provided by private companies. It is not a state enterprise. All the hospitals here are run as companies to make a profit.
I few years back I tore the skin from my finger after catching it on a protruding screw. Had to go to hospital to have it sewn back together. When asked if I wanted anesthetic I asked how much it cost. 120€ plus the needle and the administration, about 200€ all up. I declined and had my finger sewn up without it (it didn't cause me as much pain as ripping the skin from my finger!) and was still charged 400 something €.
If you're an employee you don't have to pay any excess, it's already covered, but your treatment generally isn't as good as a privately insured person.
If you phone a doctor (who is also a private business) the first question they ask is whether you are privately or publicly (i.e. through your employer) insured. Private and suddenly they have time for you. However, they'll also give you "better" treatment as they know that the insurer won't question the massive bill (which even if you claim from your insurance you have to pay and then wait to be reimbursemed by your insurer).
It's really not far off from the American system.
Basically, it's bullshit.
Like that bis sung, you only know what you've got till it's gone. NHS is awesome, but so is the system in Italy, France, Spain, etc.
I really don't understand how the richest country in Europe leaves the health of its people to private companies.
Wow. And we’ve got this to look forward to.
superglue
is almost purpose made for sticking bits of flesh back together again.
although a proper bandage is probably better
