It's that time again folks.

First tick in our household yesterday - from our own garden. We're isolating, so haven't been out, yet I extracted one from mrs_oab last night...

Stacks of ticks here in South Glos.

We went up Scotland last weekend and I ended up with 2 of the little buggers on me, still not as bad as SO, she ended up with 5 in total. No idea where we got them, at least the midges didn't do a tag team with them

Its the worst year ive seen, our cat comes in for the night very night and has at least 2 or 3 (new ones) on him every night. Weve been removing them from him every day as im not having them falling off in the house.

Im getting ticked off about it 😀

So watch yourselves out there....

It's one of the main reasons I've started riding in trousers. Used to get them all the time when lived in N Wales. They were even in the garden.

We need to hire some opossums to come and eat them all.

The big question is - are they increasing in number and season length? Anecdotally they are.

What's the natural predator or repulse for them?

Anecdotally this year does seems worse than last few. Winter has been milder up in Cumbria so perhaps that is a factor?

Having said that it I suspect ticks could pretty much survive anything!!!

I don't think it is because we're out and about more either. If anything we've probably walked less with the dog this year rather than the last two...

Got my first one in mid-April here in the Surrey Hills.... didn't notice it until a couple of days later and was quite surprised the itch on my thigh was one

Is anyone finding that they don't really pick up ticks?

Over the last 20 years I have had 2 while mates have been smothered in them. I live in the highlands and am out and about all the time, I almost never wear shorts though. My dog used to get them all the time, ghastly things when they are filled up and the dog won't let you remove them

It seems that some people are more prone to them than others maybe

Been thinking of this myself after seeing the below thread. What are you using for summer?

None so far this year. I'd normally expect at least one by now.

My record is 22 after a wee bikepacking expedition.

Smidge works

I'm amazed that after 52 years of being out and about waking, camping etc I've never knowingly had one. Taken loads off the dogs though.

Pity I can't say the same about midgies and horse flies the buggers hunt me down and drive me insane.

Some people just don't get them seemingly. Infuriates me as I'm a tick magnet and my wife has never got one despite same activities.

Since ticks feed primarily on the blood of mammals, they often transmit those illnesses to their hosts. This allows for weaker and old animals to die, giving more space and opportunities for younger and healthier animals to thrive.

Indeed, one of our lads is the tick magnet of the household - 5 in one eyebrow after a day hillwalking is his record.
Mrs_oab and I get them fairly regularly.
One of the boys just never really.
They clearly go for certain blood/skin/BO types.

Smidge does work well.

I know we've had deer through our neighbours gardens this winter, I'm assuming they are the source.

Odd, I’ve noticed a distinct lack of ticks so far this year in Berkshire. Pulled a couple of crawlers off of one of the dogs a few weeks ago but otherwise nothing. Usually at this time of year they each bring at least 2-3 home after walks. I assume it’s the weather here - other than a couple of very brief warm spells it’s been quite chilly. We’ve certainly not had any of the warm dampness yet that usually kick starts them.

We have deer in our garden and live next to a nature reserve. Have noticed one of the Robins pecking ticks off the deer. This year has been really bad due to mild winter / no frosts. Forever picking them off the dog - we give her a food supplement that makes her less ‘tasty’ but find them walking in her fur.
