Is this a thing of the past set way back in yesteryear ?
I remember in the 70's Jones's the bread shop on our high street would close half day on thursdays which meant no bun on the way home from school !
Stories please...
was Weds in my village
Only the foolish shops such as our local computer shop but they also close lunchtime on a Saturday.
Used to be Wednesday in my suburb of York when I was growing up in the 80s too. Although off the top of my head, I seem to remember it only being the post office...
Our butcher and greengrocer do this and it's always on the day that I go to buy stuff and forget they'll be shut. Wednesday down here, Thursday is late opening.
Used to be Wednesday around here too. Have you tried France?
always Wednesdays in Yorkshire. no longer iirc
We did until 2007 then we had a rival shop open so we had to do all day.
It was our little mid week holiday which we seemed to spend going to wholesalers.
The area I live in is still in the 70's, they still have 1/2 day closing and local (town) holidays - along with what seems a regional set of bank holidays.
Thursdays in my home town. The neighboring town was Wednesday.
So my mother would take me there to visit family every Thursday and give me a good hiding.
Happy days. 😐
Never had you down as a capitalist frac
Must be open 24/7 must rival internet.
If they needed to be open to make money they would be obviously they know something you don't
We used to do it as a shop Wednesday afternoon we shut and Sundays. We never even saw a decrease when a rival shop opened.
It would be an interesting idea to try and revive. Theres a push to be open all hours but shoppers have the same amount of money to spend whether you're open 35 hours a week or 168. Smaller shops are opening longer and longer hours in the face of supermarket / internet competition. The high street would be smarter to get their heads together and agree to work shorter days and weeks - the value of each sale would then be higher.
Theres still a little bit of half day weds closing where I live but thats in a village where business are respectful of each other - the cafe closes at the same time the chipshop opens etc so they they're not fighting over the same sale.
I used to work in the art gallery / museum sector and Monday closing was a 'thing' and is still quite common. As a visor attraction your front of house staff would have to work sat and sun so Monday was their day off and for everyone else it was a chance to work with the doors shut to the public so its when redisplays and rehangs would happen.
First job was as a YTS at local bike shop in Wolves. half day was Thursday's and was when all reps used to try and get in as they knew we'd be in a good mood haha
it was Wednesdays here and it carried on into the 90s. Sainsburys, Woolworths, Boots, Marks, all of them closing mid afternoon. Nothing open on Sundays except a newsagent and banks always shut @15:00 everyday.
Was Wednesdays in every bit of Hampshire I've lived in. I'm not around to go a shopping precinct of an afternoon, so no idea if any shops are shut these days.
Yeah Wednesdays here too, even the big chains like Woolworths and Boots would shut at 1pm.
I think it died off about the same time Sunday trading started.
It's one of those things I sort of miss - until I need something on a Sunday at 16:01 and shouting moaning about living in the dark ages.
I do admire the French and their stance on keeping their trading hours, they do seem to have a sense of 'lifestyle before business'. Sundays are the busiest days of the week for a lot of shops now - my Brother works in retail, yeah it was a faf if you needed something on a Sunday, but you could usually get by with whatever the corner shop had, now we're all 24/7 people - at the time it seemed convenient - but now I feel it's part of the reason why we're all so busy these days.
There was a strong opposition to Sunday trading way-back-when, sadly perhaps it was fought too closely on thinly vailed religious grounds “Keep Sunday Special” - but really I think we might have been all better off if the shops stayed closed on Sundays. It was quiet nice back when most places were eerily quiet for one day a week.
Half day Wednesday here as well. 9-5 hours otherwise and closed Sundays. Then people wonder why the shops get no custom. Here's a thought, open an hour later during the week and swap Sunday hours for another day and you'll get more custom from the people that work for a living.
Don't do Sunday hours in Scotland by law, thank god...
Wed was early closing, Thu was part late opening (when I worked in Fine Fare).
my not so local LBS is still closed Wed afternoon, lunchtimes and on Sundays..
always Wednesdays in Yorkshire. no longer iirc
Tuesday in Batley & Dewsbury iirc.
Wednesday in Haslingden, Lancs, as recently as 1999-2000. Haven't worked there since so don't know if it still exists
Back when I were a lad, in the 1980s, it was Wednesdays (some half day, other full day). Ex- step family did this with electrical stores, but I've not been aware of such practices for a long time, the interweb made the world a small and very competitive place.
Isn't it late night thursday shopping now?
I seem to remember it only being the post office...
Post offices used to have to perform a weekly audit on paper of all transactions and stock and submit it to head office - Wednesday afternoon was the allotted time.
Now it's all electronic and done a lot quicker!
I work at a council and it's half day here most days
