I’ve got a new car arriving in circa Jan/Feb 2022 and I’ll need a rack for it, so plenty of time.

The Thule rack is circa £300 and given that there’s plenty of time between now and needing to use it I can keep an eye out for a sale etc.

Question : where is a good source and where has periodic sales? Is halfords as good as it gets?

Check eBay, used bars just as good as new ones and possibly half the price! And look out for Yakima or Prorack alternatives.

I've just put Prorack bars (from roof box.co.uk) and admittedly fitting then wasn't quite as pleasant as fitting Yakima's, but they're on now, job done for three years and they're much cheaper!

Mine are all Volvo branded Thule - and were from a PSA on here.
New aero bars were £30, feet a further £20, and actual cycle racks £45 each.

The others were all Gumtree or Facebook marketplace, another Aero bar and feet, two more roof cycle carriers and a 4-bike towbar rack.

Have a look at roofbox.co.uk perhaps?

Edit: like everyone else has said!

Here you go, these are the folk I ordered off. They were so cheap in the sale I sold my 10+ year old roofbars and carriers for more than brand new ones.

Also look at other brands.

I've had 3 atera roof racks now and they have been good quality items. I don't like fitting the SMax one but that's because it's one of those stupid bolts into holes you can't see in the roof types, which is an issue with the car not the rack really.

Roofbox.co.uk and their key matching service is brilliant. Their prices always seem very competitive I've bought plenty from them over the years.

Look up skid-1972 on eBay. Sells Thule stuff - I bought a Thule 3 bike towbar rack for < 2/3 rrp, and it didn’t have a single mark on it. Was also the case for a mate of mine

I’ve always used roofbox and found them to be very good if you are looking for new.

I have some Thule stuff in the roof which I’ve been meaning to sell for a while, PM me if you are interested. 2 x sets of bars (for BMW 320 and VW Touran), 1 x set of feet, and 4 x ProRide 591.

When I bought mine, https://www.pfjones.co.uk/roof-and-van-accessories/thule-roof-bars.html were the cheapest I found

This. Even if not the cheapest absolute price, service is worth any premium. Four bike racks, other racks, two bars, one key.
