What's the deal with those dark grey number plates? Is it just another attention-seeking ’hey look at me’ things? Or maybe some kind of anti camera thing? Can someone please explain.

No idea, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any.

I think they're "now" illegal - changed the rule ?

Edit:

At least one of the above, likely both

Meant to be anti-camera, however they are not as modern cameras can pick them up. To me they now just shout to the police "pull me over". They will be illegal number plates too given they are the incorrect colour and often do not have the BS number and maker's postcode on.
Often found on an F35 BMW M140i

I think they are fitted as a warning to other drivers.
Dark grey numberplate = drives slightly less well than the more psychotic of our two cats, which lacks opposable thumbs and therefore any ability to operate the most basic controls.

Car may as well have digital throttle and brake pedals and the indicator bulbs were omitted at the factory.  May also be fitted with an audible warning in the form of a rusty old garden incinerator where the exhaust used to be.

Yet another example of the law doesn't apply to me because I [insert self entitled moronic excuse here].

Convinced local school run is actually Monza.

My lad said it's certainly something that can draw attention from the police. As said, it's not just the colour but the other aspects that mean they may not be legal plates.

It's a coded signal from the car owner.

Those with the decoding book know it means '****er onboard'.

Bit like personalised plates or those with illegal spacing to try to make it look like their name

Makes me think 'I bet they spent more on that number plate than they did when buying tyres'.
