£160 seems pretty steep for something I'll probably lose, but are they any good or just a gimmick?

Mate has a pair, he rates them, but he would wouldn’t he.

personally, id be worried about losing one of them.

worth noting, they’re not the same shape as normal apple earbuds, they are a better shape/more comfy.

i haven’t tried them, so my opinion is moot

If you’re worried about losing one, there are tethers to let them hang round your neck, with a magnet so they lock together, cost a tenner. Easy to slide off to charge.

If you get some of those little round foam earphone covers that used to go on the early earbuds, they can help hold them in.

What on top of the price 😉 do they translate for you?

Only messing, sure if you spend that much on a set they are perfect. Real world test, see very few of them out and about on public transport

I’ve seen a few pairs when I’ve been using the Tube in London, and elsewhere. Personally I’d rather stick with wired ones, I’ve got a couple of pairs, one with the 3.5mm jack, the other with the Lightning connector, and I just like the fact that if needed I can just hang them round my neck, and I don’t have to worry about charging the damned things. If I was to go BT, I’d get a BT adapter for my earphones, that’ll give me eight hours of play.

I have a pair.

I was lukewarm about them at first - the sound quality isn't as good as I was hoping for, and they don't go as loud as I would like.  However, I mostly use them for audiobooks, so neither of these are super important.

However, what I have grown to like:

Integration with iPhone, iPad and Mac laptop is excellent (as you would expect).  Generally I use them with my iPhone: open the case an put them in your ears and they are instantly connected and ready to use.  Take one out, and whatever you are listening to pauses.

Battery life is pretty decent (several hours, depending on volume) and the case holds 2 or 3 charges worth.  Charging is fast - 15 minutes or so gets you enough for a couple of hours.

The fit is good.  I have enormous lug-holes, but they don't rattle-around or fall out - I use them running several times a week.  I may have a problem over time with sweat ingress as I run in Sydney temps and sweat like a pervert in a plastic bag.  I have destroyed several pairs of headphones like this - including those marketed as sweat-proof.

You can turn all the Siri-gubbins off.  Tapping on each earbud is configurable - I have mine set to skip forward(right) or back (left).

One of the things I like about them most is actually barely noticeable - they virtually never lose connection.  Others I've had lose the connection to the phone if you put it in the wrong pocket.  With My AirPods I can wander around the house (downstairs) with the phone on the kitchen worktop, and not lose connection.

If I lost mine tomorrow - I'd go out and buy another pair.  I'm pretty critical of apple products of-late, but the EarPods are the exception: they are excellent and very jobs-era apple-y

The whole idea of charging headphones just seems bizzar to me. It just creates an issue from something that wasn’t one. Wired headphones do the same job for less money.

The charging isn't really a burden - they charge up from the little case that you store them in.  You just plug the case in for an hour or so every so often.  I think you're right if you are an infrequent headphone user - probably easier to stick with wired.

I specifically wanted fully wireless headphones for running - they are much better than having a phone jumping around in your pocket pulling on a headphone cable.

I bought some of these recently - they are excellent. Perhaps sound quality isn't up to Apple's (not amazing) sound quality but they are almost 90% cheaper.

Not sure about this. I would say fit is personal. Standard wired Apple earbuds fall out of my right ear pretty much instantly and the left after a couple of minutes. Didn’t come as a surprise that these were exactly the same (didn’t buy but borrow a friends to see). So for me at least the lack of customisation means they would be totally useless.

That's hilarious. Why would you buy ear pods + that tacky solution rather than some Beats X which would function the same, look x10,000 better, be cheaper and still provide the Apple 'just works' shiz with the same W2 chip.

Too true, they don't fit my ear canals either. The only tips that work for me are the triple flange hobbies that Share and some others use. Sennheiser rounded jobbies fall out or don't seal in my freaky lug 'oles.

That's a super review, Batfink. I'd not seen anyone diss them yet, so I just thought 'nobody is going to spend all that money on some headphones and say they're shit' - a bit like a Santa Cruz.. but you've highlighted some really cool functions about them that I didn't know about, and which would probably tempt me to buy some.

Has anyone used them running?

I love mine too. i have become dependent on them, having massive panics when they're not where i thought they are....

which is strange because they're not that great. sound quality, perfect for spoken word, awful for music. they are comfortable but don not feel secure, would never ride or do any sport in them, i use them mainly for driving. i have a van with a shitty old radio so i listen to a lot of audio books and podcasts on long drives, and im always ready for a hands free phone call, and siri will read texts and emails to me... also sitting at work - its nice being able to get up and walk around the place leaving my phone on the desk. and general travelling too, watching films etc, its great not having the trailing cables... the little case is a quality bit of kit too.

They're not intended to be audiophile quality, if you want better sound quality you go for the wireless Beats headphones with the same functionality, though bulky headphone form. These fall squarely in the category of 'I wouldn't buy them myself, but if were given them as a gift I'd use them' just like my Apple watch, which is a great bit of kit now I've got one and I use it a lot, but I would have never bought it myself. So a gimmick? no. Expensive? very.....it's Apple. They only do expensive.

I can strongly recommend Trekz Aftershokz Air.

They have revolutionised my riding.  I can listen to music and still hear traffic and talk to people without shouting.  They fit over the straps of my helmet and don't interfere with my glasses.  They last about 8-10 hours.

Mine were £105 from Argos.

I'm thinking of getting something like this. They don't have to be beats but something like that style.

I'm happy with fully-wired but I can't charge my phone and listen to music at the same time.  Such a nobbish feature.

This is a MUCH cheaper solution.

They fit into the “there doesn’t seem to be anything particularly great about them,  but in real life are actually brilliant to use” category

i have a set of the Bose wireless ones for running, but use the air pods all the time for work calls, podcasts and audio books

so this thread seems to be split between:

those who actually have them and think they are really good

those who don't actually have them or tried them and think they are overpriced rubbish.

I wonder if there is anyone who has them and doesn't like them?

The main question i'd have is whether I can buy just one side on it's own, as I'd definitely loose one!

I nearly bought some last month but then found out that the next generation ones are rumoured to be noise cancelling too, but that is only a rumour so I think I will get some soon.

Yep. Vaporware is strong alternative if you really don’t want to get the airpods. 😉

...and those that like Apple stuff but don't want two tampons hanging from their ears so bought a pair of Beats X cos they have all the functions (inc. the W2 chip, minus Siri) in a much more usable form.

Yes, I have some of those and they are nice. Sound quality is fine for portable use, battery life is genuinely as stated even after several months, and the transmission range is insane - really good. Only issue is for whatever reason the volume/skip buttons are reversed. I.e. volume up skips backwards.

I'm not opposed to spending a bit of money on headphones, I have a few pairs in the £80 - 200 range, but to me £160 is just too much for a pair to be taken to the gym etc.

I use headphones daily, wired just aren’t an issue for me. For running I can see how they’d be useful though. I’d definitely lose them too and at that price it would make me cry.

Regarding running - yeah - this was the main reason I bought them.  Using fully wireless headphones is better than even the beats-style "wired together" design for running.  I know it's hard to imagine it would make that much difference, but it does.

Yes the fit is (obviously) personal - I went to the apple store and tried some on before I bought them - jumped up and down, shook my head about etc.

I have ginormous ears, and run 10km 3x a week for the last few months.  Not had one fall out, not even once.

As I said - bit worried about sweat ingress as they are not water resistant.  So far no issues.

If you are the kind of person that loses things, yes I suppose you might lose these - but they do have a "ping" feature that means you can use your phone to locate them.  Not had to use it yet.

When I bought mine (6 months ago?) all the other wireless buds had shitty reviews - most because of unreliable Bluetooth connections between the buds.  FYI: the airpods both individually communicate with your phone - rather than 1 passing the signal to the other, as most do.  This left me really to choose between the airpods and the bose ones.  The bose ones weren't available, and the numpties in the bose store had no clue when they would be - so I went for the airpods.  I've since seen people wearing the bose ones - and they look even stupider than the airpods.  Most of the photos show them side-on, so you don't appreciate how far they stick out!
