Wife's just got back from walking the dog and apparently a George Cross and Union flag have been put up on a footbridge in my village. I thought about going and taking them down but might just take a photo and post it on FB with the comment "Come on the Red Roses! #WRWC 2025" or actually go and write that on the England flag!!
I do think it's interesting though, that by & large most countries seem to be able to embrace patriotism in a way which doesn't divide the country in the way it does here.
I think the English situation isn't that dissimilar across much of current Europe with the rise of the far right to excuse the failing of neoliberalism over the past 20 or so years, here in Germany among most of my German friends and colleagues there seems to be equal suspicion of flag shagging patriotism.
In the UK I think the establishment and media has helped push the cause with the poppy day fetishism in recent years, which seams to have become a rather more oppressively enforced mass hysteria event than when the actual generation who lived through it were more largely represented in society.
it does look mega shit
Probably not helped by all the flags I’ve seen looking like they came out of a cracker.
The only people laughing here are the owners of whichever Chinese sweatshop is manufacturing them.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much. We’ve rain forecast for next week. They’ll probably all dissolve

Too true, I'm a bit of a traditionalist, I think flags of a poor standard, fhung improperly* from random uprights and hangers look ****ing toss. Don't even get me started on the abortions that are have other symbology printed on them, or even worse handwritten. 🤮
The irony with these patriots is they can't even treat the flag with the appropriate level of respect and it/they deserve.
*There are a few exceptions to this rule like a military vehicle whip antenna or if bungeed across the back of a vehicle to stop out american cousins mistaking us for kids in a playground.
Historically, though, that is nonsense. Plenty of Welsh and Scottish individuals were involved in the UK government and East India company etc. There has been some valiant efforts to blame the English for all the ills of the British Empire but its about as historically accurate as some of the flag wavers utterances.
That's on a par with my 80+year old, history teacher, step mother proclaiming that at least the Indians got good railways out of the Raj.
🤣

Which countries? All i know that do flag waving nationalism have nasty edges of racism
Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel
- The english flag has been claimed and used by racists. The scots and welsh ones much less so
It does make me laugh at the number of these so called patriots are happy and proud to have defaced the very flag and symbol of the nation they claim to so proud of. The fact they don’t see the irony in this is of no surprise but amuses me
I think flags of a poor standard, fhung improperly* from random uprights
I did like the line of them at half mast since they hadnt brought a ladder long enough to hang them properly. Although to be fair I guess they might have been mourning the loss of the English tradition of only using flags in moderation.
Done properly it adds something eg when the Mall has the Union Jacks up or an village church has the St Georges flying from a medieval tower on a sunny day or a memorial day parade heading the different groups.
However if the flags were up constantly on the mall and if everyone on the memorial day parade had their own to wave about it would lose its value. Having a bunch of cheap temu flags randomly attached to things definitely fails the test.
It’s racism designed to intimidate and provoke.
It’s not patriotism.
It needs to be called out on social media and in real life or they will move the Overton window so far right we won’t even notice when people are bounded out of their homes. It’s already started in Ireland, north and south and the Faragistes want that to happen in England.
My social media feed this morning seems to have lots of clips of flag carriers either being attacked or being arrested. No idea if the flag carrying is incidental or when these snippets were actually filmed.
Meanwhile, over in The Times and reported on the BBC, Farage wants mass deportations to prevent a breakdown in public order. Yeah, all those asylum seekers waving their flags and protesting menacingly....
I've complained to the BBC that they've given farage the headline that his deliberately decisive and borderline racist press release was designed for. Same as the reporting of the reform leader saying if people were upset at being unsafe around immigrant hotel areas the should protest.................................. peacefully.
I asked that they give the other minority parties in Westminster as much headline time.

It is nationalist (and thus 99% also racist) intimidation, plain and simple.
It is also pathetic. The mini roundabout one. They paint the national flag on there so they can drive their German/Italian/French/Foreign cars over it. What next? St George's flag doormat so they can show their love of England by wiping their feet on it? Morons.
It's like the blokey bloke who is worried he might actually be gay feeling the need to go on every ten seconds about how he's not gay.
Someone tried to celebratea roundabout being painted near us - someone replied it looked like a cheap hot cross bun, someone else said they'd owbneed a Philips screwdriver to remove the roundabout.
It's all whipping up idiots but there's a lot of push back as well.
It’s a bit ironic that the people who bang on the most about how proud they are to be English/British make the actual act of being English/British acutely embarrassing for the rest of us!
Meanwhile, over in The Times and reported on the BBC, Farage wants mass deportations to prevent a breakdown in public order. Yeah, all those asylum seekers waving their flags and protesting menacingly....
I’ve just read the Farage interview (so you don’t have to). In typical Farage style what he’s proposing is dispensing completely with due legal process and ordering mass detentions on arrival and forced mass deportations.
i don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound very ‘British’ to me. In fact, that sounds an awful lot like fascism.
As with all the rest of his so-called policy proposals though, they’re somewhat light on detail. Mass deportations to where exactly? He doesn’t say, other than a brief mention of Afghanistan and Eritrea. Aye, we’ll good luck with negotiating those flights with the Taliban Nige.
How does he propose over-riding the legal system to do so? Again… no specifics there either. The usual guff about withdrawing from the ECHR, but then he described the whole process as ‘simple and straightforward. I seem to recall him saying the same about Brexit and that went well, didn’t it?
Its all just more foghorn racism to appeal to not only the kind of toothless, six-fingered morons presently waving flags outside asylum centres, but with the Times interview, those reactionary bigots who like to be a bit more reserved about voicing their prejudices.
He’s hoping that though they’re not about to go and paint a mini-roundabout, they’ll be quite happy to vote Reform in the May local elections instead.
Robert Jenrick appears to be shamelessly chasing the same demographics, just not as cleverly. Farage is very good at disguising his nastiness behind a smile. Honest Bob, not so much.
Forget all the legal stuff, how's he proposing to actually return them without them being refused at the border? SBS in small boats throwing the returnees into the shallows in a secluded cove?
Anyone else seeing the irony of Reform councils bleating about the cost of having to repaint mini roundabouts and crossings bemoaning the acts of vandalism. Starting to reap what the sowed.
There’s a part of me that would absolutely love to see a Reform government with Nige as PM, just to watch them try to deliver this pie-in-the-sky nonsense they’re proposing.
Lets see how the ****-wits who voted for them react when it turns out that it’s quite a bit more difficult than just shouting ‘Send’em back!’
The interview about his proposals is laughable. Flying people to Ascension Island, 4,000 miles away, Rwanda (again), tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of people detained in some spare RAF bases they’ve got knocking around, withdrawing the UK from just about every international agreement.
It’s utterly ridiculous, but I’m sure the hard of thinking will lap it up.
There was one thing he got right. When asked about Kemi’s plan to reveal at the next Tory conference her plan to withdraw the UK from the ECHR, he replied ‘who? Nobody even knows who she is’ 😂
I know I shouldn't have but on various FB posts about flags I've asked the question "when does the book burning start?" along side a link to that scene in Indiana Jones and the last crusade.
It gets mixed reactions from lots of likes to "what book?" to a picture of a t shirt with " if this flag offends you, I'll help you pack" emblazoned over a union flag
Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel
Boswell (This being a Johnson quip) always maintained that the actual line was "False Patriotism is the last refuge..." But then Johnson was also as scathing of the French; "France is worse than Scotland in everything but weather" as he was about the 'Scotch' [sic] "Knowledge is divided among the Scots, like bread in a besieged town, to every man a mouthful, to no man a bellyful."
So y'know, perhaps not the best to be quoting someone who was pretty scathing of the neighbours.
Saw a St. George flag painted on a mini-roundabout yesterday, given the area I saw it, it scans. Fast work though. Schools go back soon, folks will be back at work.
WTF is going on? I’ve woken up this morning and gone on a bike ride to find there are flags everywhere. Lamp posts, motorway bridges, gardens. The 🔔🔚 who lives opposite me has been out this morning (at 06:30 the coward) with a stepladder hanging one on the lamp post outside his house.
If i saw one of these flags I'd be checking it over for a "Made in China" label to photograph and share on all the FB threads
I see that daft Tory woman who was jailed for advocating burning Mosques is now referring to herself as a political prisoner.
Yes love, you're like this nations very own Nelson Mandella 🙄
She also said
"I think with Starmer he needs to practise what he preaches.
"He's a human rights lawyer, so maybe he needs to look at what people's human rights are; what freedom of speech means; and what the laws are in this country."
Yes dear, those laws are the ones that put you in prison.
This is just the shifting of the Overton window by the likes of Reform and the Mail. They are praying for mass riots along with the Tories of course.
Poopascoop - there was an article last week in that hotbed of leftie liberalism, the Times, saying its coming to something when the so-called party of law'n'order are literally wetting themselves with glee at the prospect of mass civil unrest and riots on the streets, which could put people lives in danger, not least those of the police officers trying to stop them.
Its par for the course with Farage and co, who are very adept at this kind of thing, having had years of experience of their Tommy Robinson in red jeans schtick. They always leave just enough ambiguity for plausable deniability. The Tories are relatively new to this proper far right thuggery and clearly aren't bright enough to know where the lines are. Honest Bob being the most obvious and also the most pathetic example of this.
I can't see their decision to throw in their lot with Mr Yaxley-Lennon being the vote winner they clearly think it is, though

Strangely, all the unattractive men who were jailed for similar offences are not getting the same amount or type of coverage think 🤔
She's arranged a meeting with 'Trump Officials' (whoever they are) to discuss 'Freedom of Speech'
Thats her lined up with a nice little grift on the far right Merican nutjob circuit then.
I'm sure Liz Truss is out there trying to get herself arrested as we speak
The FB algorithms have just unwisely shown me a video put out by Honest Bob showing him putting up flags around his constituency and being applauded by his adoring public. I left a comment pointing out that a large part of the current issues were down to the Tory government he was part of.
Stopping in Newark on a century ride on Wednesday, if I see the guy I would happily lose my job and do time for punching his smug face. Better not wear a club jersey for that ride.
Reminds me of when there was some far right march going through a German village or town, when the inhabitants of said town sponsored the march to raise money for refugees.
edit, correction it wasn't for refugees,
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/nov/18/neo-nazis-tricked-into-raising-10000-for-charity

Didn't the hotel population of asylum seekers reach its peak when he was immigration minister? I'm pretty sure it did
Ah yes... a quick google brings up this....
He really is a piece of work isn't he, old Honest Bob?

Someone in the dept of justice should have a private word with her. "You've been released early. Start showing some remorse by shutting your racist trap. Or I'll put you back behind bars you little tramp".
Strangely, all the unattractive men who were jailed for similar offences are not getting the same amount or type of coverage think 🤔
She's no oil painting either.
Nickc. The quote is from long before Johnson is it not?
Its as true today as it ever was. When your policies are shite shag a flag
Note the SNP position is very different as is the sentiment north of the border
https://www.snp.org/policy-area/immigration/
Or did i misunderstand and you dont mean Boris Johnson ? Oops
Just now got back from a glorious week in Scotland and thought I’d check this place out to ask wtf is going on with all the flags!
every other bridge over the M6 from Lancashire to the west mids has various UJ and SGC flags, including some reform ones, then at various points along a roads from M5 back home.
ffs let me go back to Scotland!
Whoever thought rural france isn't racist obviously doesn't live there!
Can I just signal my virtue whilst here?

Actually, I might wear the club jersey in case I get to slap him. It's got the Union flag on one shoulder and the St George's cross on the other arm.
Protesters at the local asylum hotel were out number by the anti racist group

Is it possible to lower the value of a motorway bridge?
None round here, but we do live somewhere nice.
I suspect the correlation between number of flags and flat-roofed pubs / shithole area is strong.

I was thinking about the 3 former homes I had in areas now predicted to go to Reform, they're all affluent areas, 2 are top 10% for income, the 3rd top 20%, all rural, all way out of my ability to buy my own home. The 4th one not going to Reform is the poorest and by quite some margin, this one is urban, I always remember the neighbours smashing their lounge windows out (not in) for some ****ING reason.
just to watch them try to deliver this pie-in-the-sky nonsense they’re proposing.
that's it, it'll be berxit all over again :-/
anyway, flags, seeing those pictures on the news looked a lot like over here around the Twelfth...

Inequality has grown too much, public services are all getting worse, and immigration is a convenient scapegoat.
I think it's all going to get worse until the inequality is fixed.

I think it's all going to get worse until the inequality is fixed.
Why try and fix it, and risk failing or being unpopular, when you can blame immigrants for your failure to do so?
With a can of red spray paint, and four quick flourishes, any already doctored roundabout could be transformed into a hearty welcome to our Georgian expat friends.

Prosperity index data taken from the Indexes of Multiple Deprivation, but I'm not giving you location data down to that narrow a level on a public space. Each constituency will have a range, but the IMD data zones I was living in are where I quoted the prosperity % from.
You can investigate the mapping I used here https://dclgapps.communities.gov.uk/imd/iod_index.html
celebrate St Alban, a proper English saint.
Or St Edmund for those of us in "The Mystic East".
Well fair enough, but what the data won't show is that Norfolk NW contains King's Lynn which isn't a great place, but doesn't have a large black/Asian population whilst Sheffield Central does. The rest of Norfolk NW will pull the prosperity number up. Sheffield Central is urban and far smaller.
I'm not sure what excuse the yokels around Daventry have, though?
For data on Kings Lynn see the above link. But.... That's not any worse than towns in my current constituency, nor the one before that (both Scottish). Although as mentioned up thread, Reform are tripling their vote share here despite TJs assurances things are different here, I'm way more concerned about where we are going. And they'll only need one or two Scottish seats to start grabbing regular headlines with click bait statements.

My anecdotal experience of Reform, or Reform narrative sympathetic voters in England. Is that flag shagging, or publicly expressed attitudes aren't always reliable indicators. I guess you'd call them Shy Reform Voters.

I agree. Do we honestly believe that a great many of the more obvious mouthbreathers actually get off their arse and go to the polling stations?
I'm not convinced.
piemonster - the polling I saw was around a doubling of the reform vote and them gaining a handful of seats all via list non in constituency votes for the next holyrood election- not a vast majority as predicted in england
Its far from perfect and we have our own bams - and the free publicity reform get is abhorrent and has an effect
My thesis is that the pro europe pro immigration policies of the SNP along with the calling out of the racists has its effect. There is another way possible rather than the pandering to the racists of the labour party and that other way as shown in Scotland works
Edit: I think ( but don't follow the detail) we can see the same effect in London which is a high immigrant area. Low reform vote and a political leader happy to call out the racists for being racist
Nice to see all the flags celebrating the patron Saint of Palestine, St. George.

Tj, EC predictions here for vote share/seats. Includes current predictions by seat.
*I'm looking at Westminster. But I think I've seen Scottish Elections share at 17%.
https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/area_scot.html
Fortunately right now getting no seats.
My concern is that they'll start tipping over some seats as voters start seeing them normalised as an option when nearly 1 in 5 are already heading that way. At that point I can see places like D&G, Ayr going to Reform.
Do we honestly believe that a great many of the more obvious mouthbreathers actually get off their arse and go to the polling stations?
I'm not convinced.
If you are not a far right supporter and you're concerned about their impact then it would be an extremely dangerous assumption that people of an intolerant disposition won't be voting (even if they normally don't).
Taking Brexit as a parallel. The referendum was a status quo vs. fundamental change vote. This, I think brought out people who would never bother to vote on a routine election who had strong views on the EU. I suspect there were many who wrote off that vote as a few noisy xenophobes...not quite how it ended. The referendum got a turnout around 70% a level higher than most general elections since around 2000.
https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/general-election-2024-turnout/
I think both sides expected Remain to win which might suggest galvanisation of the Leave vote was probably a driver in the uptick in turnout.
When you put far right candidates in the mix trading off voter prejudices and "patriotism" or anti establishment this will galvanise those who might previously not have been bothered to vote, or at least it might for "change" a "new world".
We shouldn't forget how well Reform has done at council level. Someone turned up to vote for them there.
I think this flag thing gets insidious when not flying a flag singles outr people/houses/businesses for attack, for not being 'patriots' or whatever. You fly a flag if you want and I don't really care. But if you expect me to, or care if I don't, then that's when we're at the 1938 stage.
That's when the divisive angle of populism gets dangerous and it moves on from attacking immigrants to attacking other people around us. That's how it goes. And that's exactly what populists like Farage want to see. Right now I don't necessarily see the flag lot as racists but I do see some with that mentality as easily manipulated and where the ranks of any future SS types will come from.
Not in reply to anyone's comments above.
I note that the government will be forced into putting asylum applicants into unused military bases... and... private rentals houses if they don't win the hotel legal battles that are incoming.
So, you will see a dispersal of migrants all over the show meaning they are harder to track and more likely to end up as a flag shaggers neighbour.
Unintended consequences indeed!
Its fairly obvious that the flag-shagging Reform lot won't be happy until everyone arriving in this country is immediately deported, or the governemnt go retrospectively rounding people up, ICE style.
So anything the governemnt do that isn't actually that will just have them moaning exactly like they are now. Its the same as the Brexiteers. They won't take yes for an answer. Anything less than mass deportations just won't cut it with these idiots.
Farage knows this full well, which is why he's proposing exactly that, even though he knows its a ridiculous, totally unworkable proposal. But then when did reality ever intrude on the nationalist, neo-colonial fantasies of post-Brexit politics in this country?
Someone has posted a video from a local Reform county councillor offering flags to anyone who wants one on the village FB page.
My first thought was to report it to the mods as political posts aren't allowed, but I opted to comment and call it out as thinly veiled xenophobia. We'll see how it goes.
unused military bases.
Personally I would consider that a cruel and unusual punishment.
Not the place for families, let alone groups of unaccompanied individuals.
I visited my mum last weekend and due to a short closure of the m11 I had to drive through Epping. I know the town well, mum used to live there, so I knew i would drive past the Bell hotel. As I came into epping I saw every lamppost through the high street had union flags or st George crosses hanging from them. It felt like pure intimidation, not any kind of celebration of Britishness. I was disgusted and ashamed.
Riding around yesterday and it felt to me like the intimidation element isn't just the volume but the tatty haphazard nature of it all. Bridges, roundabout, spare bit of railing, lamppost has some piece of cheap and nasty cloth/plastic zip tied to it. We've got obscured signage and lighting locally.
Just waiting for the first shunt because some halfwit has sellotaped a large one to a railing and it gets ripped off by the wind into the carriageway.
Just waiting for the first shunt because some halfwit has sellotaped a large one to a railing and it gets ripped off by the wind into the carriageway.
Yeah I did see one which was a toss up between it got blown and caught in some bridge railings vs it was a bloody halfarsed job not fixing it properly leaving it wrapped around the top rail.
Newsthump comes closest.
As I came into epping I saw every lamppost through the high street had union flags or st George crosses hanging from them.
Shows how media pushed it is. I went to the Epping Ongar beer festival beer festival back on the 26th July when things were starting to kick off. Got a bus from Epping station but wasnt a single flag or inbred to be seen (main protests were the next day).
, even though he knows its a ridiculous, totally unworkable proposal.
When he does come up against problems and blockages, it's then someone else's fault, EU bureaucrats or whoever. He can literally say and promise whatever he wants knowing that he never has to actually succeed with anything, coz he can just rile people up with "it's all their fault." The bloke is on a no lose gravy train.
Your average Paintspray Patriot is a bit shit at geometry it seems.
Typical comment from one of the metropolitan elite.
As any patriot knows with the constant risk of drone strikes you need to be ready to spray a roundabout in a matter of seconds before ducking back into cover.
On many bridges up the M1 and A1 from Sheffield to Northumberland
There’s a Roundabout and Zebra crossings done near me (part of town that’s often on fire or shown on Road Wars). Thing is the paint didn’t dry before people drove over them, so it looks extra silly.
I was under the impression it’s poor form to allow the national flag to lie on the floor. Daubing a poor representation on the road, to be smeared by traffic seems even worse.
Some people just need an excuse to indulge in bad behaviour.
It used to be football matches now it’s any immigration excuse.
Maybe that's what the Palestine protestors were trying to achieve, patriotic planes ?
@dissonance mum now lives in Ongar so when I got to Hastingswood to find the m11 closed southbound from there I drove on to Loughton via epping. M11 was open before I got there 😆
There were quite a few protestors outside the hotel on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Peaceful at that time thankfully.
On many bridges up the M1 and A1 from Sheffield to Northumberland
I've just driven Leicester to Leeds and only saw 2 or 3 bridges with any on. Maybe a few have been removed.
I haven't seen a single st George flag I can recall from the last few days
I have seen some Palestine ones and also Jamaican ones because it's a carnival down in chapel town Leeds tonight.
Makes me realise how much I enjoy living in a diverse city that isn't full of white trash ****s
Saw a couple on bridges coming up the M1 from Rugby to Derby, there's a couple of mini roundabouts been done in Ilkeston apparently.
Ms. RM has been rinsing me today. I decided to pull out an old gorilla box and sort through it as I was looking for some old maps to get framed. I found loads of old velcro ID patches which have the Union Flag on. She said I should stick them on an old shirt and 'go hang out with your flag-mates'. 😂
Good job I like her.
