... I have seen periods with more snow over a shorter period but have never known as much snow to stick around for so long. Anyone seen conditions that were as snowy for as long as this current spell?

I remember the last long spell was about 1982. There was a lot more snow, which seemed to stay for about 2 weeks.

Growing up in north east Scotland I remember winter 1995/6 being pretty cold and snowy. While the snow melted completely a number of times I recall it snowing every week between October and March.

God yeah seen loads like this even more as a kid, 1992 was also a good one and 1995/6 there was a bit of spell in about 1997/8 too.

I'm a bit amazed your post to be honest.

Aye Drac, but I've not seen my grass in about 3 weeks now. I've never known it last so long without melting.

Apparantly, so I was told, a period of reduced sunspot activity means colder spells in winter and in October less sunspot activity was observed than normal. Its a cyclical thing that happens and when the Thames froze in 1700s, astronomers at the time noted reduced sunspot activity.

To answer the OP, the early '80s is the last time I can recall a significant amount of snow hanging round.

global warming? the ice age is coming! run to the hills!

on a serious note though, if the predicted climate change does end up melting the arctic ice caps, releasing loads of freshwater into the North Atlantic, it could do very funny things to the Gulf Stream - which is the only thing that keeps the British Isles milder than they ought to be for their latitude...

best buy your skis now while you can

Being another NE Scotland person I can confirm that that winter was a nightmare. I recall that the snow came and went for months. You'd get a couple of days respite then it would dump again.

There was a couple of weeks of snow last year late on in winter (but mainly at the weekends) and there was early snow last winter too.

My new year ride through the local woods with my riding buddy Charlie. The snow has been ace but getting kind of bored of it now . This was taken in the woods near Pencaitland East lothian.

You seemed shocked/surprised by judging by your comment you passed.

Hardly unheard of.

It's been pretty full-on in SE and E Central Scotland. I can't think of any time when we have had snow for much more than a week.

We've had snow on the ground since 17 December and it's been lying permanently even in centre of Edinburgh (has been snow in Princess Street Gardens since then anyway).

I remember some of the winters in the 1980's had a lot more snow hanging around for a lot longer. This one has already delivered more than some of the recent pathetic winters of the noughties though.

Its still early days and this winter has started off well. Hopefully there will be further snows and cold to come. 🙂

Seeing as it's been around for so long you would think the relevant authorities would grit the bloody road's 😡

I'm glad all the scientists are agreed, that this is the inevitable outcome of climate change:

See, they've been warning us for years! 🙄
