On the one hand, yeah fair enough, Empire pie probably wasn't the greatest idea ever. One the other hand...it's spicy shepard's pie FFS get over it...

somewhere in the middle of that, probably.

And so, after virtually weeks of uneasy truce, the STW Pie War once more erupts into bloody conflict.

I'm making sure our 'currant' views on Garibaldi haven't been revised by historians so I can tuck in. He was against the Catholics and into women's freedom, so I reckon we're alright there. If we forget about the freemasonry.

We've been through this. http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/oi-binners-what-have-you-started/page/4#post-7565463

I think we can make an exception to names of pies that aren't defined by their ingredients. That is to say, a pork pie is a pie with pork in it. A shepherd's pie does not contain shepherds, and similarly a cottage pie generally does not contain cottages.

Ie, "shepherd's pie" is the full name of a dish that is not actually a pie, in the same way that an Eccles cake is not actually a cake. See also, beef wellington.

As a chap from one of the former colonies and heritage of another, i agree with the tweeter. She wasn't offended, neither am I. However, I find the idea of the empire 'distasteful'. I don't have good associations with it and so yes, it 'leaves a nasty taste in the mouth'.

No need to take offence. Your associations with the word empire, might be quite positive. I won't buy it, I also avoid coronation chicken.

Good work.

Thing is, it's a stupid name for a pie. It's nothing to get too worked up about but it's a throwback.

(and why do people always say "offended"? The original tweet was critical, not offended. It seems like most of the response has gone directly to misrepresentation and gone from there, which I think tells you a lot...)

So you're offended that someone's offended that someone else is offended by on behalf of someone else who might be offended but no-one's really offended at all, except for someone hitherto unmentioned whom might be offended after all, we just don't know?

I think I need a lie down.

Well, I find the actions of the Roman Empire distasteful when they invaded my country, I find the actions of the Holy Roman Empire distasteful, just because, and I find the Empire-building actions of the former USSR, and the current Russia distasteful.
Any more Empires you might want to add to the list?
You might want to write this down and meditate on it:

You raise a valid point, one of my wifes friend - a hipster type living in the states wrote a lovely blog article basically stating that le shock horror....her own contrymen can be racist...but like *cue upward inflection*..."I didn't realize it cuz the west is the one historically responsible for empire and subjugation of other cultures." Conveniently forgetting the Mongol, South American, Chinese, Islamic and Japanese empires - and lots wonderful oppressions such as the Chinese oppression of Tibetanss, Filipino suppression of Aetas (yes Fililipinos aren't indigenous - she ****ing loved that when I mentioned it) or Tamils etc etc ad ****ing nauseum.

We just simply did oppression better than them, historical ignorants everywhere.

Well, I don't know about 'we', I don't really know which empires you don't like to see celebrated. But me, I don't really like one the group that slot at my father and beat up my grandfather on one side and interned some of my family on the other. So, whilst I do have views on other empires, this one is one I really don't like very much. I guess much the same way I don't like bullies, but i really don't like bullies who pick on my kids.
