We all know that the lens will be distorting things but, as above- No Freaking Way am I watching that. I had a bit of a tumble off an alpine arete a while ago. That vid is pulling my trigger.
Yes, the lens is distorting it. It looks like it's about a 1000 meter drop, in reality, it's only about 100 meters.

That reminds me of the ‘Don’t Look Down’ documentary on Channel 4 years back about people climbing up and hanging off cranes and bridges and chimneys. Absolutely bonkers and makes you feel a bit woozy just watching it

My wife showed me that video. Hard to tell exactly what it looks like in real life, but it’s scary as anything, no matter what. I don’t really understand what compels people to ride lines like this. But then again, I don’t understand (or agree with the need for) Gee Atherton’s last couple of videos either.

Actually it’s being trapped in a confined space, there’s a book by Alan Garner, which describes a number of people, including children, having to squeeze through narrow underground tunnels, which has me hyperventilating just thinking about it, or the poor bloke in America who got stuck in a pothole after taking the wrong route; he was so stuck that he died stuck there, and it was impossible to get his body out, he’s still there, and the entrance is now sealed shut.
Walking naked through a shopping centre wearing wellies and a Stetson hadn’t occurred to me, basically because, while I might wish for the ground to open up and swallow me, my imminent death wouldn’t be likely.
I walked up to the Chalet des Pyramides, a little cafe overlooking one of the glaciers at Chamonix, and some of the others in the group decided to follow a footpath to get a better view of the glacier, so after a few minutes, I decided to follow them.
That was a mistake, I lost the path, turned around, and seeing the steep drop in front of me, completely froze! I had to carefully sit down, and scoot down on my bum, until I got to the path proper and stand up, using whatever trees were handy. Not necessarily terrified, but bloody close to it. [img]

Sweet gods, this book has haunted me since childhood for exactly the same reason. There is a section where they are crawling through a shoulders wide tunnel and there is a water filled sump they have to shuffle through. The description is so vivid.

There's all sorts of stuff from his kids books that still bothers me. I don't remember that bit but it could be why I have a problem with really confined spaces. I still have my original copies of that, Gomrath, Elidor and The Owl Service - I keep meaning to read them again to see whether they really were that powerful, or whether I just had a great imagination that they sparked off. I've loved some of his more recent books.
