This has given me a bit of a shock...

Wingate fire: Ex-marine's home destroyed 'after standing up to yobs' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-56468719

This could so easily have been me, I have confronted antisocial motorbike riders before who were regularly (2 or 3 times a week) terrorising my neighbourhood, racing at 50MPH+ in a 20 zone , riding on pavement, etc.

I had obv called the police but they never turned up or when they did, some hours later/next day the bikers had obviously gone. I don’t think they can chase them in a car anyway and specialist bike units are few and far between. But still, I am never going to do it again. I would probably move house instead....

Me too, I can't stop myself from calling out ****holes (as in challenging their behaviour, not randomly shouting "our-souls"), maybe when I grow up I'll calm down (oldnick, 52 1/4)

I had an issue similar to this a few years back. I used to live in a very rough part of Newcastle (Denton) that used to get terrorised by the local youths on mx bikes at night. After a few run ins with the local yobs and the police being called multiple times, I made the sensible decision to get the hell out of there, before I ended up getting in a fight. Now living in a lovely Northumberland town with far fewer scrotes.

The party of law and order need to up their game.

Or address the underlying social issues.

Or both, ideally.

I used live on a farm just outside Wingate, tis a charming place, was a bit of an eye opener for a wide eyed suffolk boy seeing local teenagers racing horses bareback up and down the high street on a saturday morning 🙂

Big problem here in south Manchester. There seems to be a bit of a police presence around these parts, but it's almost impossible to catch these guys in the act. So they will continue to do it without consequence. The sooner I can afford to move out of the city the better.

Been some reports of similar behaviour around our sleepy little villages and the lanes in between in the last few weeks. Is the spring sap rising or something?

I met some friends for a walk by the thames near Hackney, some pikeys thought it would be amusing, for them, to see how close they could ride past us. Believe me, its so tempting to hit them....we ignored it, seemed to work, 3 close ride bys they left to pick another target.

Just not worth it, I figure if they are stupid enough to antagonize a few adults they ve got a knife and stupid enough to use it.

Friend's husband is a policeman - I told her about the above and she said apparently the latest "thing" is calling the fire brigade out to a fictitious fire and then attacking them!! I mean what the actual F?

EDIT - I live in the North East BTW so this is close to home...!

I had obv called the police but they never turned up

I inadvertently discovered that the way to get the cops to turn up is to say you've seen a knife.

We had problems with rival gangs fighting on our street in Glasgow. Called the cops multiple times and nobody ever turned up until the night the operator asked if any of them had a knife, I'd seen something getting waved around that might have been a knife so I said exactly that and the blue lights came round the corner before I'd put the phone down.

It's posts like this that make me want to turn vigilante! I know it's not worth it, but where does it end? It will just gradually get worse and worse...

I know kids have always pushed boundaries, act tough (regardless of where they're from, why is that??) and try and antagonise adults, but the last few years i've noticed that they've actually come to believe that they've become untouchable.

I could quite easily knock 7 bells out of a lot of teenagers and young adults. I blame the lack of discipline in schools, i blame parents who refer to their kids as 'mate' (you're not their mate, you're their to provide a framework and to teach them discipline, ethics and manners), with a lot of families i see (friends included) it's like the tail wagging the dog in terms of their kids behaviour. There's a serious amount of disrespect from all areas of society at the moment towards each other, selfish etc and i don't know why? Flytipping where i live is a HUGE problem since lockdown and i have no idea why, there are several tips within 15 miles in each direction.

The Police cuts haven't helped as you need boots on the ground to keep order. The latest protests have all seemed to be anti police in one guise or another. Why is that?

That's my rant / ramblings on the matter(ish).

I'm off to stand in front of the mirror... 'you looking at me?' 😉

Yeah, nice rant apart from that - I do and my kid (well, he's 18 now) is the most respectful, well behaved son I could wish for. And he is my mate.
Carry on

Or it could just be years of living in poverty and all the issues that encompasses that such as depression, lack of social care, home issues that go unchecked and a million other things. You can't just say kids lack respect you need to look at the cause and its not just parents calling their kids "mate." My brother and I call his son dude... does that mean hes gonna end up like the kids you describe or is the cause only linked to people that call their kid "mate." You should call up Bojo as you have clearly just solved a massive social issues we need to stop parents calling their kids mate.

quote most often seen in the local paper to describe the stabbing victim…

Thats laughable you should stick to the DM.

Went to our "local" tip (our actual local is closed for redevelopment. Got there to find a sign saying "Wait time 1 hour". I I can imagine many folk won't be bothered with a 1 hour wait when there are miles of quite back roads and farm tracks nearby (and yes, they're littered with fridges, sofa, baby seats etc).

As above with the flytipping stuff Gateshead is starting to resemble a land fill site thats burst and has had some houses built on it.

The thing with the local authority tip and all the bins (reducing in number weekly) by the council the people that use them are not the problem it's the folk who who see no reason to put anything in a bin or drive it to the tip. I cycled a route on Saturday and people were literally flytipping in their own gardens and streets and just setting fire to it.

Visit Gateshead tourist board refused to comment on this post......

Anyway, we are getting away from the OP story. Its a shocking state of affairs now that society (is that still a thing or are we just an economy?) is in a pretty crappy way and seems to have gone downhill very rapidly in the last 10-15 years.

INE but this is a big part of it I suspect. Some families around here are 3rd generation unemployed, neither their parents or grandparents have ever had a job. The utter selfishness is one thing and may or may not be attributed to the social/economic status of the individuals but setting fire to a family home because the householder dared to remonstrate with you for behaving in an antisocial and selfish way is truly shocking. Admittedly, there may well have been some background and it wasn't just retaliation for that one incident but still, this is mob justice; it could so easily have killed them all, the perpetrators must have known this, and it's appalling.  That, and calling out the fire brigade so you can attack them - what on earth is the reason/justification for that?

When is Mars going to be habitable? - I might want to be on the first flight.....
